Man beaten to death over ‘theft charge’ in Gaibandha
A 38-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by an angry mob over theft charge at South Bhangamor Jugipara village in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Hafizar Rahman, 38, of Chakmamrojpur village in Sadar upazila.
Enayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadullapur Police Station, said Hafizar along with three people, riding on pick-up van, swooped on the house of one Rafiqul Islam, breaking open the door at the night.
Later, they looted valuables including cash and gold ornaments after breaking open the almirah of the house.

Rafiqul and other house inmates were absent during the stealing.
When they were decamping with the booty, the thieves also looted three cows of Rafiqul from the cow shed.
Sensing the presence of the thieves, local people managed to catch Hafizar while the two others managed to flee the scene with the pick-up van.
Local people later gave Hafizar a good thrashing, leaving him critically injured.
He died on way to a local hospital.

Stolen diesel seized by Coast Guard in Chandpur
Coast Guard members seized 3,800 litres of stolen diesel from a Launch Ghat area of Matlab Uttar Upazila of Chandpur on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of coastguard conducted a drive at Mohanpur’s Dasani Launch Ghat area and seized the diesel stolen from two abandoned houses, Lieutenant Commander Khandaker Munif Taqi, media officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard Headquarters, said.
The estimated market value of the seized diesel is Tk 4,33,200, added the officer.
However, no one could be arrested in this connection.

The Coast Guard subsequently handed it over to Mohanpur Police Station.

3 held over stealing oil from standing train in Feni
Detectives arrested three alleged members of a gang of thieves along with 1500 litres of diesel from Feni Sadar upazila in connection with stealing oil from a standing train on Feni Sharshdi station.The arrestees are Md Abdullah, 55, son of late Abdur Rahman of Dakshin Khan house in Sharshdi, Md Abu Taher,34, son of Farid Uddin of North Sharshdi and Abdur Rahim, 22, son of Dulal Hossain of Baduria village of Kutirhat in Sonagazi upazila.Tipped off, a team of District DB police conducted a drive at Fatehpur area in Sharshdi Union of Feni Sadar Upazila in the early hours of Saturday and arrested them, said Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Superintendent of Feni Police in a press briefing.During the drive, the law enforcers recovered 1500 liters of stolen diesel and seized a pickup.They are trying to arrest others accused, added the officer.A case was filed in this regard.

Probe into 7,000 disappeared fishplates from PWI store
A probe committee has been formed to look into the disappearance of 7,000 fishplates worth Tk 1 crore from the Permanent Way Inspector (PWI) store of Bonarpara Railway Junction in Gaibandha.
Officer-in-Charge of Bonarpara railway police station Taposh Pundit said disappearance of fishplates weighing 60 tons from a store at the east corner of the well secured Railway Engineering Department is a mysterious incident.
Bonarpara rail station manager Khalilur Rahman claimed former senior assistant engineer Akbar Ali had sold many things from the store of the engineering department secretly before his recent transfer.

Immediately after his transfer assistant store keeper Dipak Kumar Singha and senior deputy assistant engineer Abdul Mazed came as additional in-charge who only used to come to Bonarpara for clearing salary bills, said Khalilur Rahman.
Tuesday morning, after coming from Bogura, Abdul Mazed opened the store and suspecting shortage of stock he started counting fishplates and discovered the disappearance, he said.
Abdul Mazed said he is only additional in-charge of the store. The fishplates may have been removed from the store during the tenure of former in-charge, he said.
Assistant store keeper Dipak Kumar Singha will file a case with the Bonarpara police station in this regard on Wednesday, he said.

Divisional chief engineer of the railways department, Anwar Hossain said a probe body has been formed led by the Bogura divisional engineer Md Saidur Rahman to investigate the matter.
Actions will be taken against the guilty found in the investigation, he said.

Police: Housemaid held with stolen gold jewellery, money
Detectives from Dhaka have held a housemaid in Cumilla with gold jewellery and money allegedly stolen from the house she worked in the city's Rampura.
The arrestee was identified as Mst Nupur Akter.
On July 23, residents at an apartment at Rampura High School Goli found that gold jewellery and some cash were stolen, said Joint Commissioner of Detective Police Md Mahbub Alam in a press briefing.

Next day the owner of the house filed a case with Rampura police station over the theft. Detective branch of the Ramna branch started investigating the case and arrested Nupur from Baurtala area of Laksam police station today, he said.
During the arrest police have recovered the jewellery and Tk 5000 stolen from that house.
He said recently a syndicate has been active in the capital that gets into houses disguised as house help and later steals valuable goods, money, jewellery and escape.
The drive to detain members of this syndicate is on, said DMP police.
The DMP official requested the city dwellers to collect NID and permanent address details before appointing anyone as house help.

He said if necessary people can seek help from police and submit their housemaid’s information to CIMS system of police to keep themselves safe.
