Helena Jahangir, 4 others get two years imprisonment
A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced five people including, Helena Jahangir, expelled leader of an Awami League sub-committee, to two years imprisonment in a fraud case filed with Pallabi Police Station.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain handed down the judgment. The court also fined them Tk 2000 each, in default, to suffer two months more imprisonment.
The four other convicts are-- Hazera Khatun, general manager of Helena Jahangir's IPTV Joyjatra television, its coordinator Sanaullah Nuri, chief news editor Quamruzzaman Arif and staff reporter Mahfuz Shahrier.

The court also issued warrants for the arrest of Helena and Hazera for not to appear before the court during the hearing.
On March 14, the court fixed March 20 for delivering the judgment in the case after concluding the law-point arguments from both the defense and state counsel sides.
Abdur Rahman Tuhin, Bhola district correspondent of Joyjatra television, filed the case against Helena and four others with Pallabi Police Station on August 2, 2021.

According to the prosecution, Helena Jahangir took Tk 54,000 from Tuhin for appointing him as a district correspondent of the television. After joining the television, he did not get any remuneration for several months. On the other hand, the television authorities used to take Tk 3,000 from him every month.
On November 21, 2021, inspector Shahinur Islam of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted chargesheet against Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court.
On July 29, 2021, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Helena Jahangir, 49, from her residence in the city’s Gulshan-2 area.
The elite force members "seized foreign liquor, illegal walkie-talkie sets, casino equipment and deer skins" from her possession.
Four separate cases were filed against Helena.

Helena Jahangir gets bail in DSA case, may walk out of jail soon
A Dhaka Court on Wednesday granted bail to Helena Jahangir, a businessperson-turned politician, in a case filed under Digital Security Act clearing the last obstacle against her release from jail.
Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddiq passed the order after hearing her bail petition.

Since she got bail in all other cases filed against her since her arrest on July 29 last year, Helena will be freed once the bail orders reach the jail authorities, court sources said.
Helena earlier got bail in cases relating to fraud, illegal possession of narcotics and violation of telecommunication law.

HC rejects Helena’s bail plea in DSA case
The High Court on Tuesday rejected bail to Helena Jahangir, an expelled Awami League member and businessperson, over a case filed at Gulshan police station Under Digital Security Act.
The bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Md Badruzzaman dismissed the bail petition as not presented at the court and as a result the accused will not be able to walk out of jail.
Lawyer Z I Khan Panna and Syed Fazle Elahi presented the petitioner’s side during the hearing while Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed, Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah and Deputy Attorney general AKM Amin Uddin appeared for the state.
Helena submitted a petition seeking bail from the High court last week.

On July 30, Rapid Action Battalion-1 (Rab) filed the case against Helena at Gulshan police station for spreading invectives and abusive comments against ministers and government high-ups using digital platforms.
On September 21, Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge KM Imrul Kayes rejected Helena’s bail plea in this case.
On the night of July 29, Rab arrested Helena from her Gulshan residence, four days after she was removed as member of AL sub-committee on women affairs.
The elite force "seized foreign liquor, illegal walkie-talkie sets, casino equipment and deer skins" during the four-hour raid on her home.

Later the court placed Helena on a 17-day remand in four cases.
She secured bail in one case from court on August 17 and in two other cases on September 21.

Helena Jahangir seeks bail from HC in DSA case
Helena Jahangir, an expelled Awami League member and businessperson, filed a petition before the High Court on Monday seeking bail in a case over Digital Security Act.
The petition was submitted before the bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Md Badruzzaman, Helena’s lawyer Syed Fazle Elahi said.

Helena Jahangir gets bail, but cannot walk out of jail
A Dhaka court Tuesday granted bail to ‘Joyjatra IPTV’ chairman Helena Jahangir in a case filed under the Telecommunication Act but she needs to secure bail in other cases to walk out of jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Md Noman passed the order on a bond of Tk 20,000 during a hearing on the bail plea filed by advocate Shafiqul Islam. The state side stood against the bail plea during the hearing.
Court sources said Helena Jahangir will stay behind the bars until she gets bail in another case filed over fraud with Pallabi police station and in cases filed with Gulshan police station under the Digital Security Act (DSA) and Narcotics Control Act.
According to the case complaint, Helena Jahangir with her two associates Hajera Khatun, 40, and Sanaullah Nuri, 47, and other involved have embezzled a large amount of money in the name of appointing district correspondents in Joyjatra IPTV claiming it as a satellite channel which is not even a registered channel.

They used to extort Tk 3,000 every month from those correspondents.

Helena Jahangir put on 14-day remand in four cases
A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed ‘Joyjatra IPTV’ chairman Helena Jahangir, recently removed from the Awami League sub-committee on women affairs, on a 14-day remand in four separate cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman placed her on a 4-day remand each in two cases –one over fraud and another under the Telecommunication Act- filed with the city’s Pallabi police station.
The court passed the order when police produced her before the court after the end of her 3-day remand.

Besides, Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khayer Jessy placed the accused on a 3-day remand each in two cases filed with Gulshan police station under the Digital Security Act and Narcotics Control Act
On July 30, the court placed Helena Jahangir on a three-day remand in the case filed under the DSA.
Earlier on July 31, police sought 5-day remand for interrogating her in the Narcotics case and 7-day in the case under filed under the Telecommunication Act.

Public prosecutor Abdullah Abu represented the state side during the hearing of two cases filed with the Gulshan police station.

2 associates of Helena Jahangir held in Dhaka
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Tuesday arrested two associates of Joyjatra IPTV’ chairman Helena Jahangir from Gabtoli area in Dhaka.
The arrestees are Hajera Khatun, 40 and Sanaullah Nuri, 47.

On information, the intelligence wing of Rab conducted a drive in Gabtoli area early Tuesday and arrested them.
Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of Legal and Media Wing of Rab headquarters, said two laptops and two mobile phone sets were recovered during the drive.
Besides, the arrestees gave some information during an interrogation.

Process is underway to legal action against the arrestees, said officials.

Another case was filed against Joyjatra IPTV’ chairman Helena Jahangir under the Telecommunication Act on Friday night.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-4) filed the case with Pallabi Police Station, said ASP Imran Khan, assistant director (media) at the Rab headquarters.

Earlier on Friday, a Dhaka court on placed Helena Jahangir on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order after investigation officer Sheikh Shahnur Rahman produced her before it, seeking a 5-day remand for interrogating her.
Earlier, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) filed the case against her with Gulshan Police Station, ASP Imran Khan, assistant director (media) at the Rab headquarters, told UNB.
Besides, Imran said, Rab is getting ready to file more cases against Helena who was removed from Awami League sub-committee on women affairs recently.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Thursday night held businessperson Helena Jahangir from her Gulshan residence, four days after she was removed from her post of a ruling party sub-committee.
The elite force members "seized foreign liquor, illegal walkie-talkie sets, casino equipment and deer skins" during a four-hour raid on her home that started at 8pm, Rab Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu said.

"Following the raid, Rab detained Helena and took her out of the residence at 12:15am. Helena will be taken to the Rab Headquarters where she will be quizzed," Palash added.
Helena, a director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries, and chairperson of Joyjatra TV, recently lost membership of the Awami League's sub-committee on women's affairs for "breaching party disciplines."

The sub-committee removed Helena for her "involvement with the Bangladesh Awami Chakrijibi League," a group which has no official connection with the ruling party.
