A Dhaka court on Sunday sent former independent lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman to jail after his bail was denied on completion of five-day remand in a case over an attempt to murder. The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatuallh passed the order. Though the defendant’s lawyer submitted a petition for bail, the prosecution opposed it. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court ordered to send him to jail, said Mirpur Model Police Station’s Sub Inspector Abdul Halim, also investigation officer of the case. Earlier on October 22, a Dhaka court placed him on a five-day remand in the case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station. Before the arrest Barrister Suman said on his verified Facebook account, "I am going with the police. See you in court. Pray for me, everyone." Suman was elected as an independent candidate in controversial January 7 polls from Habiganj-4 constituency.

A college student suffered burn injuries as she was set on fire by a stalker at Dimukha village in Ghior upazila of Manikganj district on Monday night. The victim ,Kajal Akter, 25, a BA final year student of Manikganj Government Women College and daughter of Kajal Akter, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital with 40 percent burn injuries. Quoting local UP member Miran Khan, Riazuddin Ahmed Biplab, officer-in-charge of Ghior Police Station, said Kajal used to go to the house of Sharif Miah,40,to tutor  his daughter. Kajal got married to expatriate Sohel Rana one year back over phone and since then used to disturb her for continuing their illicit relationship. On Monday night, Sharif called Kajal out to a nearby orchard and an altercation ensued between them over the issue. At one stage, Sharif set her on fire after pouring kerosene and fled the scene. Later, she was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated. A complaint was lodged with Ghior Police Station in this connection which police turned into a case. Police are trying to arrest Sharif and have collected some evidence from the spot.
