Infant’s death in Thakurgaon UP polls violence; 3 cases filed
Three cases have been filed against 800 people over violence centering Bachor UP polls results in Ranisankail Upazila of Thakurgaon when a nine-month old was shot dead in ‘police firing’.
The first case was filed on Saturday afternoon against 350 anonymous people at the police station upon receiving a complaint from the presiding officer of the polling center Md Khatibar Rahman, said Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Md Jahangir Hossain.
On Wednesday night, Thakurgaon sadar police station ASI Bilash Chandra Roy lodged another case against 150-200 unnamed people on charges of obstructing cops from performing their duties and attacking them at the polling centre.

Ranisankail Police Station ASI Ahadul Zaman filed the third case on the same night against 200-250 unnamed people over besieging the police station.
On Wednesday evening, when results of Bachor UP election were announced at VF Junior High School polling center, supporters of a defeated candidate attacked police.
At one point of the clash police fired bullets to take control of the situation. Unfortunately Suraiya Akter Asha, who was on her mother’s lap at that time, was shot in the head.
After the incident, enraged locals besieged some police members including Officer-in-Charge of Ranisankail police station SM Zahid Iqbal for few hours at Khutiatuli area.
Later additional police members rescued them and sent two cops to hospital.
On Thursday, a three-member probe body was formed by Thakurgaon district administration over the incident with district magistrate Ramkrishna Barman as its head and additional superintendent of police Mirza Tarek and district election officer Saiful Islam as members.
The committee was asked to submit a report within seven days.

Probe body formed over infant’s death in ‘police firing’ during polls violence
A three-member probe body was formed by Thakurgaon district administration on Thursday over the death of a nine-month old child allegedly in police firing during UP polls violence in Ranisankail upazila of the district.
Deputy Commissioner Md Mahbubur Rahman formed the probe committee with district magistrate Ramkrishna Barman as its head and additional superintendent of police Mirza Tarek and district election officer Saiful Islam as members.
The committee will submit a report within seven days, said Indrajit Saha, Assistant Commissioner Land (AC Land)
Meanwhile, the baby girl, Suraia Akter Asha, was buried after her Namaz-e-Janaza on Thursday.

At one point of the clash police fired bullets to take control of the situation. Unfortunately Asha, who was on her mother’s lap, at that time was shot in the head.
Asha’s mother Minara Begum said, “I was standing beside the lane of my house when bullet fired by police killed my daughter.”

UP polls violence: Child killed in police shooting
A child was allegedly killed in a police shooting during a clash at Ranisankail upazila in Thakurgaon Wednesday during the union parishad (UP) election.
The deceased was identified as two-year-old Asha of the upazila, Ranisankail Upazila NIrbahi Officer (UNO) Sohel Sultan Zulkar Nain told UNB.
Asha's mother went to Bhangbari polling centre to learn about the Bachore union parishad election results. At one stage, supporters of two member candidates locked into a clash.

The child died on the spot in the lap of her mother as police opened fire to bring the situation under control, Zulkar Nain said.
Later, agitated locals brought out a procession carrying Asha's body.
Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, Zulkar Nain added.

Teenager, another killed in Ctg UP polls violence
Two people including a teenage boy were killed and several others injured in clashes between supporters of chairman candidates during union parishad elections in Satkania upazila of Chattogram .
The deceased were Md Abdur Shukkur, 34, of Bajalia union and Tasif, 13, a seventh grader and son of Jasim Uddin of Nalua Union.
Satkania Upazila Election Officer Abu Taleb Talukder said they were killed during clashes.
According to the locals, at Nalua Union, Tasif was stabbed dead in a clash that broke out between the supporters of two chairman candidates over occupying Morphala polling center in Ward 8 at noon.
The relatives of the deceased blamed the supporters of the boat candidate for the death.

In Bajalia union, Abdur Shukkur sustained bullet injuries during a clash between supporters of two chairman candidates in Ward No. 2.
Later, he was rushed to Keranihat Ma O Shishu Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, said Dr Md Rakib Uddin, Resident Medical Officer of the hospital.
Meanwhile, in Khagaria union, supporters of Awami League-backed candidate Akhter Hossain and independent candidate Jasim Uddin clashed in wards 6 and 7 and a few rounds of bullets were exchanged between the two groups around 10am.
Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Rashidul Haque and Executive Magistrate Omar Faruq visited the spot after the clashes and postponed elections at two centers in the union.
Additional police were deployed at these two centres to bring the situation under control, said Md Abdul Jalil, officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkania Police Station.
Voting is underway for the seventh phase of local body elections to 138 Union Parishads (UPs) in 24 upazilas of 20 districts.
The voting began at 8am Monday at 1,350 polling stations and will continue till 4pm without any break.

UP polls violence: One shot dead in Sylhet
A garage mechanic was shot dead during a clash between villagers and police centering Fulbari UP election in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 50, a resident of Lakshmipasa union of the upazila.
According to locals, the supporters of independent chairman candidate Emran Hossain blocked Sylhet-Zakiganj road in Boitikar Bazar over the poll results of two centers in wards 8 and 9 in Fulbari Union at 8pm.

A clash ensued between the villagers and police when police tried to disperse the supporters of Emran Hossain, forcing police to open fire, they said.
Abdus Salam, who suffered bullet injures during the clash, was taken to MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital (SOMC) where doctors declared him dead.
In-charge of Osmani Medical College and Hospital police outpost SI Jonny Chowdhury said one was killed and five policemen were injured during the clash.
Abdus Salam had bullet wounds on his body, said SI Jonny Chowdhury.
The body was kept in SOMC morgue for an autopsy, he added.
Additional police have been deployed in the area after the clash, the SI said.

UP polls violence leaves one dead in Cumilla
A youth was killed and 20 others were injured at Manikar union in Meghna upazila of Cumilla district during the Union Parishad (UP) polls across the country on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Shaon Mia, a supporter of an independent candidate for chairman post.

Locals said a clash broke out around 12pm between the supporters of Awami League-backed candidate Jakir Hossain and independent candidate Harun-ur-Rashid over establishing dominance at Amirabad Primary School center in the union leaving over 20 people injured.
Later, the injured were sent to Meghna upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Shaon dead.
Dr Salauddin Molla, consultant of the Health Complex, said one of the inured died upon arrival and six others were shifted to Dhaka for better treatment as their condition deteriorated.

Polling began in 835 of 848 UPs at 8am on Thursday and will continue till 4pm.
More than 41,000 candidates, including 3,310 contenders for the post of chairman, are contesting in the countrywide second phase UP election.

1 killed, dozens wounded in Faridpur UP polls violence
A man was killed and at least 30 were injured in a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates ahead of Union Parishad elections in Saltha upazila of Faridpur on Saturday.
The victim was identified as Mariz Shikder, 32.
About 30 houses were reportedly vandalized and looted during this time.
Police and locals said supporters of independent chairman candidate Rafiq Mollah clashed with supporters of another independent candidate Tuku Tagore in Khardia village of the union around 3pm today.
Marij, a supporter of independent chairman candidate Rafiq Mollah, was seriously injured following the clash .

Woman killed in Bagerhat UP polls violence
A woman was killed in a clash centering the election to Chandpai Union Parishad in Mongla upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Fatema Begum, 70.
Witnesses said supporters of Chandpai Union Parishad member candidate Matiar Rahman Moral and supporters of rival candidate Shafiqul Islam locked into a clash over the polls, leaving Fatema dead on the spot and four others injured.
The wounded are Matiar Rahman Moral, Borhan Sheikh (35), Israfil Sheikh (28) and Awal Moral (40).

Police detained two suspects from the spot.
Officer-in-charge of Mongla Police Station Mohammad Monirul Islam said ,” The matter is under investigation. How she died would be known after an autopsy. We have detained two for interrogation.”
Voting is underway in 65 UPs under nine upazilas in a peaceful environment.
Voters have gathered in the polling centers since Monday morning to exercise their voting rights. However, out of 65 union parishads in the district, 39 candidates of Awami League have been elected as chairman unopposed.

According to the Bagerhat District Election Office, polling is going on in 65 out of 75 unions of Bagerhat District. As many as 3,121 candidates are vying in the elections. Of them, 98 are for the post of chairman, 768 for the post of member in the reserved ward and 2,255 for the post of member in the general ward.
The total number of voters in these unions is 9,45,188. Voters are casting their votes in 599 polling centers. Besides, electronic voting machines (EVM) have been deployed for four unions of Fakirhat, Rampal and Mongla upazilas.
Bagerhat District Election Officer Faraji Benozir Ahmed said no untoward incident has been reported so far.
