Former in-charge booked over zebra deaths at Gazipur safari park
The former in-charge of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park has been booked in connection with the deaths of 11 zebras in January this year.
An FIR was filed against Tobibur Rahman under the Animal Welfare Act at the Sreepur police station in Gazipur on a complaint from his successor Rafiqul Islam.
In his complaint, Rafiqul claimed that his predecessor failed to promptly inform his seniors about the deaths of the zebras at the park between January 2 and 29.

Tobibur also didn't file a complaint following the deaths of the animals at the local police station and his decision to cut open the stomachs of three dead zebras was not acceptable, according to Rafiqul.

This has caused harm to national wealth and cruelty to the animals for which the FIR was filed under the Animal Welfare Act by the police against the accused, said Rafiqul.
Earlier, three officials -- the project director, the veterinary officer, and in-charge of the park -- were removed from their posts to ensure an impartial investigation into the deaths of the animals.
So far this year, 11 zebras, one lioness and a tiger have died at the park.

Criminal cases to be lodged in deaths of Safari Park zebras
The environment, forest and climate change ministry has decided to lodge criminal cases against those responsible for the deaths of zebras in Gazipur Bangabandhu Safari Park.
It also decided to file departmental cases for taking administrative action against those involved in the incident, said a press release of the ministry.
It also decided to implement the 24 recommendations of the probe body in phases.
It has taken the decision at a meeting with Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin, in the chair.

The probe committee report mentiined that the zebras died due to hazardous effects of nitrate associated with mixed bacterial infections in grass.
The committee also found negligence of the authorities concerned.

Safari Park animal deaths: Minister promises strict action against anyone found involved
Exemplary actions will be taken against anyone found involved or responsible for the recent deaths of animals at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin made the remark on Sunday during a visit to the Safari Park.
The minister said a five-member probe body has been formed already and they have been given 10 days to submit a report.

“In the neutral probe if anyone or their irresponsibility is found liable for the death of animals at the Safari Park the ministry will take exemplary measures against them and will bring them under law,” he said.
Shahab Uddin said the deaths of so many animals in such a short period is very saddening.
Regarding the developments in thwe investigation, the minister said already the body parts of the deceased animals have been sent to different labs and the Safari Park authority is consulting specialist doctors to prevent such deaths.

Animals at safari park died from bacteria:Minister
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Saturday said that the recent deaths of zebras, tigers and lions at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari park in Gazipur were caused by bacterial infection.
He said this during his visit to various projects under the Department of Livestock in Sylhet.
"The foreign animals at the zoo come from a climate and habitat different from that of our country. There are also many diseases and bacterial infections," he said.
He said that the tests after the deaths of the animals in multiple laboratories found that bacteria caused it.

He ruled out negligence by zoo officials. The zebra died of a bacterial infection. In addition, cats including tiger and lions are being infected too.
The government is working to ensure the safety of all animals at the safari park, he added.

Zebra deaths: Safari Park project director shunted out
Md Zahidul Kabir has been shunted out as the project director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur in the wake of the deaths of 10 zebras in the past one month.
Mollah Rezaul Karim, forest conservator of the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Area in Dhaka, has been given the additional responsibility of the popular park. This was announced by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in a notification on Wednesday.

On January 31, assistant forest conservator and in-charge of the park, Tabibur Rahman, and vet Dr Hatem Sazzad Md Julkarnine were removed from their positions and transferred to the forest department in Dhaka.
Md Rafiqul Islam, assistant forest conservator of the social forest department, Faridpur, and Md Mostafizur Rahman, veterinary surgeon of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park, Cox’s Bazar, were appointed in their places.

UNB has learnt that the committee members had already spoken with the owners of a South African farm from where the zebras were imported. Symptoms of a possible disease and test results have been emailed to them, sources said.

10 Zebras’ death: Probe panel visits Safari Park
The inquiry committee formed to investigate the death of 10 zebras at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur visited the park on Sunday.
The inquiry committee contacted foreign experts and experienced doctors to prevent such deaths of zebras.
The committee also talked to South African farm owners from where the zebras were imported.

Symptoms of disease and test results have been emailed to them, said a media release.
The members of the medical board held meetings on January 25 and 29 at the Safari Park to provide emergency medical care to zebras to prevent their death.
The safari park authorities have been taking measures as per the 10-point recommendation given by the medical board.
The 10 Zebras died within a month till Saturday at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park.
Nine of the 22 zebras in the park died between January 2 to 24 , park authorities disclosed on Tuesday.
On Saturday noon, the members of the medical board held an emergency meeting in the park.
The members of the medical board are Dr ABM Shahidullah, former curator of National Zoo, Professor Dr Rafiqul Alam, and Professor Dr Abu Hadi Md Nur Ali Khan from of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Hatem Sazzad Md Julkarnine, veterinary doctor of the safari park.

The committee was asked to submit the investigation report to the ministry within 10 (ten) working days.

Another zebra dies at Gazipur Safari Park
Another zebra died on Saturday at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Sreepur, Gazipur district, raising the death toll to 10 within a month.
“This took the total number of dead zebras in the park to 10 within a month. Besides, another Zebra fell sick,” said Md Zahidul Kabir, project director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park.
Nine of the 22 zebras in the park died between January 2 to 24 , said officials on Tuesday.

White lion dies at Gazipur safari park
A white lion died of heatstroke at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur on Friday evening, officials said on Saturday.
The zoo is now left with 10 white lions.
Tabibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the park, said the white lion was found dead in the evening outside its cage. "Our vets conducted an autopsy that indicated it died of heatstroke. The lion was buried later."
“There was a lot of fat in the body of the lion but its liver and kidneys were found to be in normal condition. Besides no injury marks were found on its body,” said Tabibur.
Another lion also fell sick at the park due to extreme heat. "It's currently undergoing treatment at a vet hospital," the officer said.
