PM Hasina remembers Sheikh Russel on his birthday
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday paid homage to Shaheed Sheikh Russell, the assassinated youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to mark his 60th birthday.
Russel, the youngest brother of Hasina, was brutally killed along with Bangabandhu and most of his family members in a carnage on August 15 in 1975. He was then only 10 years old and a grade four student at University Laboratory School.
Sheikh Russel Day to be observed Wednesday
October 18 is observed as Sheikh Russel Day as per a Cabinet Division decision taken in 2021.
On Wednesday morning, the prime minister along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana went to Banani graveyard and placed wreath on the grave of Russel. They also spread flower petals on the graves of all martyrs of Bangabandhu’s family.
Hasina and Rehana offered fateha and joined a special munahat seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of the Farher of the Nation Bangabandhu, Bangamata and other martyrs of the August 15 carnage.
The two daughters of Bangabandhu escaped the mayhem as they were travelling abroad at that time.

Russell was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi road number 32 in the capital. He was named after Bangabandhu's favourite writer, renowned philosopher and Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell, by Bangabandhu himself and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatun Nesa Mujib.
To mark the day, government bodies, ruling Awami League, its associate bodies and different socio-cultural organisations have taken up various programmes at home and abroad.

DU observes Sheikh Russel Day
On the occasion of the 58th birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Russell, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, people have paid tribute to him by placing flowers at his mural.
Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof. Md. Akhtaruzzaman, directors and chairmen of different organisations and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel presented floral wreaths on the mural of Sheikh Russel at University Laboratory School and College of University of Dhaka.
After paying tribute to the mural of Sheikh Russel, a discussion session was arranged by University Laboratory school and College.
DU vice-chancellor prof. Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the discussion session by cutting a cake.
Acting Principal of University Laboratory School and College Mrs. Selina presided over the meeting and Director of Education and Research Institute Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Halim delivered the welcoming speech.

Among others DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Samad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof. Dr. ASM Maqsood Kamal, Treasurer Prof. Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed, University Laboratory Ex-Students Association (ULESA) President Naeem Ahmed Khan, and Sheikh Russel's classmate Prof. Fawzia Banu were present in the discussion session. The vice chancellor said, "Sheikh Russell was a 4th grade student at the University Laboratory School and College. He had some extraordinary qualities like honesty, articulation and friendly."
"If the little Russell of that day were alive, he would have been a mature man of 59 years today and could have led the work of building a golden Bengal of Bangabandhu. But the merciless bullets of the assassins did not allow that to happen," he added.
Later, The Vice-Chancellor called upon the new generation to become worthy citizens by keeping the values of Sheikh Russell.
Mentioned, Sheikh Russell was a student of University Laboratory School and College of Dhaka University. He was born on 18th October of 1964 and killed by the assassin on 15th August of 1975 at the age of 11.
However, Leaders and activists of different hall units of Dhaka University of Chhatra League led by president of university branch Sanjit Chandra Das and GS Saddam Hussain paid tribute to Sheikh Russell's mural by offering flowers.
Dhaka University Chhatra League unit also launched a food distribution program among the street children and needy people to mark the birthday of Sheikh Russel.
The food distribution program will be held at Oparajito Shadhinota Chottor in front of TSC at 5 pm.

Sheikh Russel Day: PM releases postage stamp
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday unveiled a commemorative postage stamp and an opening day cover released by Bangladesh Post Office, marking the Sheikh Russel Day 2021.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister also used a special chancellor.
Minister for Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Mustafa Jabbar and Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus were present.

AL to observe Sheikh Russel Day on Oct. 18
The ruling party Awami League will observe the 'Sheikh Russel Day' on Monday who was brutally killed on August 15, 1975 along with most of the family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The party has set a two day-long celebration to mark the birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
A press release sent from Awami League said the party will place wreaths at Russel's grave at Banani Graveyard at 8am.
Alongside, homage will also be paid to other August 15 martyrs by laying wreaths at their graves at Banani Graveyard on that day.

Special doa, recitation of Surah Fatiha and prayers will be arranged there too.
On October 19, a discussion will be arranged on the occasion of the Day at 3.30pm at its party office 23, Bangabhandhu Avenue where Prime Minister and Party President Sheikh Hasina presided over the discussion programme in a virtual manner.
Sheikh Russel Day will be observed on October 18 each year starting from this year.
The cabinet on August 23 last approved a proposal of listing the day as an A-category day for celebration across the country.
