Container depot fire under control after 60 hours: Army
The deadly fire at BM Container Depot at Sitakunda was brought under control on Tuesday morning after over 60 hours, said the Army.
"We have been able to control the flames and the area is out of danger now,’ commanding officer of the 18th Brigade of the 24th Infantry Division Lt Col Ariful Islam told journalists around 9 am outside the depot.
He said there is still smoke coming out in the depot mainly from containers full of clothes. Water used to douse the fire is causing the smoke, he said.

“An expert team of Bangladesh Armed Forces is examining the area for the presence of any more hazardous substances. After receiving a final report from them we will be assured that there is no possibility of further danger, the commander said.

Ctg fire: Families give DNA samples hoping to at least see missing beloved’s body
After looking for her husband, who has been missing since the BM Container Depot fire, with dreary eyes Reshmi finally stood in line for DNA sample submission at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday.
She was holding her three-month old son Rihad, while her three-year-old, Rihan, was holding her left hand as she waited to enlist her husband Shahajahan.
Shahjahan was a covered van driver who went missing on Saturday night when a massive fire broke out at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila.

As the UNB reporter approached her she broke down in tears saying “I talked with him last on Saturday night over phone. He said he was driving to Bhatiari.”
Reshmi, a housewife who used to live with her husband and two kids at Nazirhat area in Fatikchhari upazila, had never thought her fate would turn like this overnight.

Youth whose Facebook Live captured blast amid fire turns up dead
The young man whose Facebook Live broadcast captured the deadly explosion that occurred as fire fighters fought the initial blaze at the BM Container Depot in Sitakunda on Saturday night has, as feared, died.
The deceased was identified as Oliur Rahman, son of Ashik Miah of Moulvibazar. He was a young worker at the Container Depot.
Oliur remained missing until Sunday noon. Later, his co-workers identified his body at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), confirmed one of his co-workers Ruel.

Ruel said Oliur might have died from the impact of the blast.
He said, “It was dinner time when the explosion occurred. We left the depot for dinner, but Oliur stayed there to make it live on Facebook.”
Oliur went live from his Facebook when the massive fire broke out at the container depot in Sitakunda on Saturday night. He was informing everyone about the fire on Facebook Live.
The broadcast firefighters and other depot staff struggling to contain the fire. Around 41 minutes into his broadcast, a blast occurs and the screen goes black, indicating whoever was holding the phone had clearly lost control of it.
People calling Oliur's phone from that point onwards found it switched off and he went missing. The blast amid the fire is suspected to have also been the cause for the greatest loss of firefighters in a single incident in Bangladesh's history.
Oliur’s relatives went to the CMCH to receive his body, said Ruel.
“The death toll from the fire climbed to 49 and there were seven fire service members among the deceased,” said Anisur Rahman, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defense, while briefing reporters at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital over the deadly fire incident.
Besides, over 200 people suffered injuries.

Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defense Assistant Director Faruk Hossain Shikdar said a large explosion rocked the area on Saturday night.
"The explosion was heard within a radius of 4km from the spot," Faruk added.
A total of 15-20 explosions occurred at the depot following the fire, he said.
Shahjahan Shikdar, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarters (media), said 13 firefighters are undergoing treatment at Chattogram Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

FBCCI President Md. Jashim Uddin has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of lives and injuries in BM Container depot fire at Sitakunda in Chattogram.

In a condolence message on Sunday, the FBCCI president prayed for the salvation of the departed souls extended his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family members.
He called for ensuring maximum safe working environment in all industrial mills, buildings and warehouses to avoid such tragic accident in future.

Ctg fire: Two sisters die of injuries
Two sisters have succumbed to the burn injuries they sustained in a fire that broke out at their flat in the Bakalia area of the port city Thursday.
The deceased were Sabrina Aktar, a 23-year-old third-year honours student, and Samia Khaled, an 18-year-old second-year HSC student of Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College in Chattogram and daughters of Alauddin Khaled.
Sabrina succumbed to her injuries on Sunday and Samia on Monday morning at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery under Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said their father.

The sisters were at first taken to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital and later shifted to DMCH as their condition deteriorated.
The fire broke out on Thursday at the five-storey building in the Rahattarpul area, where they had their flat.
According to fire service officials, the fire had originated from the leakage of gas from a cylinder on the fifth floor of the building followed by an explosion.

Two siblings die in Ctg house fire
Two siblings were charred to death while asleep in a fire that gutted their house in Chattogram on Monday night, officials said on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Minhaz Uddin (12) and his sister Ruhi Aktar (2.5), both children of Mohammad Idris Mia.
The fire broke out around 10pm at the house of Idris in ward- 4 of Saral union in the district's Banshkhali upazila when the family was fast asleep, officials said.

The fire soon engulfed two adjacent houses in the locality, according to officials.
'The fire originated from an electrical short-circuit and by the time the firefighting unit reached the spot, both the children were dead," said Nuru Bashar, team leader of Bashkhali fire service.
Dipak Kumar Singha, a sub-inspector at the Banshkhali police station, said that the police were alerted about the deaths.

Building owner arrested over Ctg fire
Police have arrested the owner of 'Maryam Villa’ in connection with Tuesday's fire in the building in Chattogram’s North Kattoli area, which claimed the life of a woman and injured five others of a family.
The arrestee has been identified as Momtaj Mia.

Jahir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Akbar Shah police station, said that they nabbed Momtaj during a raid on Tuesday night in the Kattoli area. "He will be produced in a court later in the day, and we'll seek his remand for custodial interrogation," he said.
Earlier that day, Jamal Sheikh, a member of the victim's family, lodged a complaint at the police station against two persons -- Momtaj and Bakhtiyar, the in-charge of the building.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the fire broke out at ‘Maryam Villa’, charring the six members of the family. Police claimed that a leak in the building's gas line triggered an explosion, leading to the fire.
Late on Tuesday night, Sajeda Begum, 49, succumbed to her injuries at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
