Torture at DU dorm: 3 students expelled
Authorities at Dhaka University’s Bijoy Ekattor have expelled three students for six months for torturing a fresher at the dormitory’s so-called guestroom.
The three students are Kamruzzaman Raju of Sociology Department, Hriday Ahmed Kajal of History Department and Md. Yamin Islam of the Social Welfare faculty. They are the students of 2019-20 academic session.

Earlier, a three-member inquiry committee was formed led by Prof. Shah Miran.
Prof. Salam said the investigation committee submitted its report on January 31 following which the administration issued the six-month expulsion order against the three students, found involved in the incident.
The expelled students are reportedly the followers of the DU Chhatra League leaders Abu Yunus and Saddam Hussein.

On January 26, Akhtarul Islam, a student of the 2020-21 session of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Bijoy Ekattor hall, was physically and mentally tortured for not attending the guestroom meeting by some students of the 2019-20 session.
After the incident, Akhtar lodged a written complaint to the provost of the hall.

DU hall expels third-year student for torturing junior in dorm
Authorities have expelled a third-year student of Dhaka University from Masterda Surja Sen Hall for allegedly torturing a second-year student for not attending a political programme of the Bangladesh Chaatra League (BCL).
As the actions of Sifat Ullah, a student of Women and Gender Studies, go against the university regulations, prestige and laws, the hall authorities have decided to expel him, according to a notification.
"If Sifat Ullah is seen in the hall in future, he will be strictly punished according to the university’s rules," it said.

On December 13, Kazi Porosh Miah, a second-year student of French Language and Culture Department and a resident of Surya Sen Hall, was called by Sifat Ullah to room bo 351 in the evening and was toured mentally and physically allegedly by him.
On a complaint from the victim, the Surja Sen Hall authorities quickly formed a probe committee to investigate the matter. The panel indicted Sifat Ullah for the torture.

Earlier, on November 8, Sifat reportedly tortured two more students -- Ariful Islam and Tariqul Islam -- to drive them out of the dormitory and threatened to kill them if they did not leave. He was made to sign an undertaking for the "mistake".

2 DU students endure night of torture at Surjo Sen hall
Two residential students of Dhaka University’s (DU) Surja Sen Hall hall have allegedly been tortured by two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for not attending guestroom and political programmes.
They were tortured from 2.30 am to 4.30 am early Monday, in room no. 351 of the dorm.
The torture victims are Ariful Islam, third-year student of Anthropology Department and Tariqul Islam, third-year student at the Department of Theater and Performance Studies. They are roommates staying in room no. 327.
The victims in this regard submitted written complaints to the university proctor.
DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani told UNB, “The victims have lodged written complaints. The incident took place at Surja Sen Hall. That is why I have asked the hall administration to take action.”
The accused are Sifat Ullah Sifat, fourth-year student of the Department of Women and Gender Studies, and Mahmudur Rahman Orpon, fourth-year student of the Department of English for Speakers of Other Languages under the Institute of Modern Language (IML).

Both the accused are residential students and followers of BCL hall committee candidate Imran Sagar.
According to the victims, they were called to participate in guestroom and political programmes at the hall a few days ago, but they failed to take part due to departmental examinations. Following this incident, Sifat and other accused later threatened to remove them from the hall.
On Monday, Sifat forcibly took them to room no. 351 of the dorm and together with Mahmudur tortured them. The victims were allegedly beaten with an iron rod.
The torture continued till 4.30 am and they were threatened to leave the dorm as well, claimed Tariqul and Ariful.

Attempts were made to contact Sifat and Palash over the allegations but they did not respond.
Neither did Hall Provost Dr Maqbool Hossain, respond to phone calls.
