The academic community of the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) was struck by a tragedy late Friday evening when the lifeless body of a student was discovered in a dormitory at Fudkipara in Rajshahi city. The deceased, Mehdi Hasan, was a student of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) at Ruet. The discovery of his hanging body at the ‘Ebela’ dormitory has sent shockwaves through the university, raising concerns about student mental health and the pressures of academic life. Officer-in-charge Mehdi Masud of the Boalia Model Police Station said the body was promptly recovered and sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem. “It appears, at first glance, to be a case of suicide. However, we cannot confirm anything until we receive the autopsy report,” OC Masud said. Ruet student found dead While the initial findings point towards suicide, the underlying reasons for this tragic event remain unclear. Investigators are waiting for further evidence and analysis from the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death. This tragic incident has left Mehdi’s friends, family and university peers reeling with grief.  

Students of different departments of Islamic University staged a demonstrations on the campus in Kushtia on Monday night demanding expulsion of five activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League who were found involved in torturing and intimidating a fresher of the university. The students under the banner of Bangladesh Chhatra Union IU unit brought out a torch procession from in front of Jatirpita Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall to press home their demand. The procession ended in front of Zia Moar Chattar after parading main roads of the campus. Later, a brief discussion was held there where the protesters vowed to intensify protest if the university administration fails to take stern action against the accused involved in the ragging incident. Also Read: Torture of Fulpori demonstrates university admin’s failure: Judicial inquiry report They said that the probe body formed by the Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall authorities found the involvement of IU BCL unit vice-president Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora, her cohorts Tabassum Islam, Moyabia Jahan, Israt Jahan Mim and Halima Khatun Urmi in torturing and humiliating Fulpori Khatun, a first year student of Banking and Finance Department, on February12 night. The hall administration expelled the accused from the hall for their involvement in the incident but no action has yet been taken by the university administration despite the probe body formed by them submitted the investigation report on Sunday, they said. They would continue their demonstrations on the campus until their demand is met, IU Bangladesh Chhatra Union unit general secretary Mokhlechur Rahman Sweet said. Among others, IU unit Bangladesh Chhatra Union president Emanul Islam Shohan, its general secretary Sweet and vice-president Mahmudul Hasan spoke at the protest programme.  

Eight students were injured and rushed to the hospital after the ground-floor veranda of Sheikh Kamal dormitory of Patuakhali Government College caved in, witnesses said on Tuesday. Mohammad Shamim Ahmed, assistant super of the hall said the incident took place around midnight Monday when the floor of the veranda, where some students were standing after a meeting, collapsed suddenly injuring the students. Also read: 2 DU students endure night of torture at Surjo Sen hall The soil beneath the floor may have been eroded by a water that came along with sand brought from a water body to fill the college compound, said Executive Engineer of Patuakhali Education Engineer Department Mohammad Hadiuzzaman Khan. Of the injured, three were undergoing treatment Patuakhali Medical College and Hospital while five others were given first aid.
