Cyber tribunal orders probe against suspended Gazipur mayor under DSA
A cyber tribunal on Monday asked CID police to investigate allegations that recently-suspended mayor of Gazipur Jahangir Alam made derogatory remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangladesh liberation war.
Dhaka Cybder Tribunal Judge Ash-Shams Jaglul Hussein gave CID until January 6 to submit its probe report after Supreme Court lawyer Omar Faruk Asif filed a complaint against Jahangir under Digital Security Act.
This was confirmed by public prosecutor Nazrul Islam Shamim.

Jahangir has already lost his mayoral office besides axed as general secretary of Gazipur city unit of Awami League and expelled from the party for life.
The AL central committee came hard on him after video clips in which he made the controversial comments went viral on social media.
On November 23, another case under DSA was filed against Jahangir in Rajbari.
Also on Sunday, a defamation case was also filed against him with Gazipur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Decision on legal steps against GCC mayor to be known soon: Tajul
Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam said the decision about taking legal steps against Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor Jahangir Alam will be known within a day or two.
“The government is reviewing the legal issue and the decision will be known within a day or two,” he said.
The minister came up with the information while talking to reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
“Legal action will be taken after scrutinizing the city corporation law, and we’ll let you know about it,” said Tajul.

On Friday, Awami League expelled its Gazipur unit general secretary and city mayor Jahangir Alam for life for his controversial comments on Bangabandhu and other local leaders.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee at Ganobhaban on Friday evening with party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
On October 3, Awami League issued a show cause notice to Jahangir Alam for his recent viral video with controversial comments on Bangabandhu, regarding the number of people martyred during the Liberation War and other local leaders.
He was asked to reply to the notice within 15 days.
The notice said Jahangir’s viral comments damaged the image and popularity of the political organization.
It is equal to going against the interest of the organization and breaking its disciplines which is a punishable offence according to the party’s constitution, it said.

Jahangir was asked through the letter to explain why organizational action should not be taken against him.
The mayor claimed that conspirators and anti-election groups have spread the 'technologically manipulated video' as propaganda against him.

Gazipur Mayor to seek review of his expulsion decision
Gazipur city Mayor Jahangir Alam, who has been expelled from Awami League for his controversial comment on Bangabandhu and other local leaders, said he will submit an application requesting the Prime Minister to review the decision.
“A rival group has long been involved in doing harm to me since my involvement in student politics and as a sequel to the rivalry some people have hatched conspiracies against me from conversations at home,” he said while talking to reporters at his residence on Saturday.
The mayor also offered an apology and requested Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to rethink her decision.

“I didn’t do anything wrong. I’ll accept the Prime Minister’s decision. If she (PM) wants, I am ready to walk the gallows. Bangabandhu, Sheikh Hasina and Awami League are in my existence and I want to remain as a general member and supporter of the party until death,” he said.

Earlier on October 3, Awami League issued a show cause notice to Gazipur City Mayor and the party’s metropolitan general secretary Jahangir Alam for his recent viral video of controversial comments on Bangabandhu regarding the number of people martyred during the Liberation War and other local leaders.
He was asked to reply to the letter within 15 days.
The letter said Jahangir’s viral comments ruined the image and popularity of the political organization.

Meanwhile, local AL leaders and activists brought out processions in the town celebrating the party chief’s decision.
Metropolitan unit President Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan welcomed the expulsion of Jahangir Alam.
