The students who were demonstrating in Science Laboratory area in the capital demanding half fare in public transport came under attack by ‘unknown youths’ on Tuesday afternoon. A chase and counter-chase took place between the students and the attackers in the area and some youths were seen chasing the students with sticks, said witnesses. Meanwhile, a student of Ideal College was reportedly picked up by some Dhaka College students. Shahen Shah, additional deputy commissioner of New Market zone, said, “We’ve heard about it and we talked to the principals of the two colleges. Students of different colleges in the city on Tuesday afternoon threatened to resume demonstrations on Saturday morning if their two-point demand, including half fare for bus rides for them, is not met by 48 hours. Students of Dhanmondi Ideal College blocked Science Laboratory intersection in the city around 12:30 pm, demanding half fare for students in public transport. Later, students from Dhaka City College and other adjacent colleges expressed solidarity with them and joined the demonstrations, halting traffic on the busy road.
