Prime accused among 4 held over mugging of DU student after abduction
Detectives in a drive arrested four people including the prime accused in a case over snatching belongings of a 3rd year student of Dhaka University after abduction, said police on Sunday.
The accused were prime accused Shakil Ahmed Rubel, 28, Akash Sheikh, 22, Delwar Hossain, 55 and Habibur Rahman.
Police also seized two pistols, two bullets, one magazine, one wireless set, two motorbikes with police sticker and six mobile phone sets from their possession.
Tipped off, a team of DB police conducted simultaneous drives in different parts of the city and arrested them, said Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Harun-or-Rashid.

“Shakil was involved in 1500 mugging incidents. He used to tease girls and the female students of universities and colleges in the guise of police personnel,” said Additional Commissioner Harun.
Shakil used to carry out criminal activities by living in a rented hotel room.
Earlier on August 25, Shakil, in the guise of police, intercepted a rickshaw carrying a DU female student in the city’s Kalyanpur area and forced the girl to go with him saying that she was carrying something illegal in her bag.
He then took her to Diabari and snatched away gold ornaments after keeping her hostage at knife point.

Attack on interns: Osmani Medical College students call off strike, prime accused held
Students at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital (SOMCH) on Thursday called off their protest against the attack on two medical interns by relatives of a patient, following the arrest of the prime accused.
"Following assurances from SOMCH authorities, we have suspended our movement after giving an ultimatum to meet all our demands within a week," said general secretary of Intern Physicians’ Council, Dr Matiur Rahman.
"Medical interns have joined work and students went back to their classes," he added.
Earlier this morning, the protesters held a meeting with SOMCH authorities, where health department officials were present.
Police arrested the prime accused, Dibya Sarker, an activist of Metropolitan unit of Chhatra League, around 12am on Thursday from the Shahporan area of the city, said Sylhet Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (north) Azbahar Ali Sheikh.
“The prime accused was arrested and the administration has promised to increase security inside the campus soon. So, we've suspended our movement,” said Dr Matiur.
“However, if all the accused are not arrested and security is not ensured within seven days, we will resume the movement again,” he added.

Prime accused in Bagerhat gang rape case held
Police have arrested the prime accused in a case over the gang rape of a woman from Bagerhat district town.
The arrestee was Saiful Islam Tito, 26, son of Shamsul Hawladar of Boro Bashbaria village in Sadar upazila.
KM Azizul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station, on Tuesday said Tito was arrested from the district town on Monday night.

However, police are trying to arrest the four other accused in the case.
Earlier, a 24-year-old divorced woman was reportedly raped by five men at Boro Bashbaria village in Sadar upazila.
The crime took place in the dead of night at a betel-nut orchard as the criminals took her there when the woman, a mother of a four-year-old child, came out from her home in response to the nature, said Additional Superintendent of police Mahmud Hasan.
She is now undergoing treatment at Bagerhat District Hospital.
The woman lodged a complaint with Bagerhat Model Police Station and police registered a case.

Shahjahanpur double murder: Prime accused put on 7-day police remand
A Dhaka court on Monday placed Masum Md Akash, the prime accused in the murder of an Awami League politician and a female college student in Shahjahanpur, on a seven-day police remand.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain passed the order when DB inspector Yeasin Shikder produced him before the court with 15-day remand prayer.
Police on Sunday arrested Akash, 34, from Bogura district.

AL politician Zahidul Islam Tipu, who was in a microbus, and Samia Afrin Priti, a 22-year-old college student, who was in a rickshaw on Thursday night were killed in firing, police said.
During police interrogation, Akash admitted that he followed Tipu to kill and when the vehicle carrying Tipu reached near Shahjahanpur Rail gate he opened fire on him.
Akash was also wanted in four other criminal cases, said police.
Tipu was a former general secretary of AL Motijheel committee and Priti was a student of Begum Badrunnesa Government College. Tipu’s driver was also injured.
The crime occurred in front of Islami Bank Hospital around 10.15pm when Zahidul was returning home in his microbus and Samia on a rickshaw with her friend, police said.
They were all stuck in a traffic jam in the area when a biker wearing a helmet and a mask appeared from nowhere and fired at them.

The three sustained bullet injuries and were soon rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where Zahidul and the student died of their injuries hours later.
Later a case was filed against unidentified people over the double murder on Friday.

Cox’s Bazar schoolgirl rape: Prime accused, 2 others held
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have detained three people including the prime accused in a case over violating a schoolgirl in Cox’s Bazar.
They were detained from different parts of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar district s on Monday, said Commanding officer of Rab-15 Lieutenant Colonel Khairul Islam Sarkar on Tuesday.

Md Ashique, 27, son of Nazrul Islam of Uttar Nunuachhara of Cox’s Bazar district town, was detained from Anwara upazila of Chattogram district around 11:30 pm.
The elite force members also detained Kamrul, no 4 accused in the case and Mohammad Shaheen, manager of Mom’s Guest House, from different areas of Cox’s Bazar district on Monday night, he said while speaking at a press briefing.
During preliminary interrogation, Ashique reportedly confessed to his guilt to Rab officials.
On December 13, Ashique along with two others picked the girl up in a vehicle when she was returning to her home.

Later, they took the girl to Mom’s Guest House where they violated the girl repeatedly after keeping her confined there for two days.
On December 18, father of the girl, lodged a complaint against nine people and police later recorded the case.

Cox's Bazar gang rape: Prime accused Ashiq arrested
The prime accused in the case filed over the gang rape of a married tourist in the Cox’s Bazar last week has been arrested.
Accused Ashiqul Islam Ashiq was arrested from Madaripur district by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the paramilitary force’s Legal and Media Wing.
According to the police, there are 17 cases against the prime accused Ashiq, including for assaulting women, possessing drugs and illegal arms.

Earlier in the day, Cox’s Bazar Tourist Police arrested three more accused in the case- Rezaul Karim Sahabuddin, 25, Mehedi Hasan, 21, and Mamunur Rashid, 28, from different places in Cox’s Bazar district.
Police said the individuals arrested earlier today were found to be involved in the crime indirectly during investigation.
However two other prime accused in the case Esrafil Huda Joy and Mehedi Hasan Babu are still absconding. There are two police cases against Joy, said Additional DIG of Tourist Police of Chattogram Division Mohammad Moslemuddin.
Earlier on Saturday, Riaz Uddin Chhotan, manager of a hotel that was one of two locations where the woman was raped, was arrested and remanded for four days.
With Ashiq, five people have been arrested in the case.
On Friday, the court recorded the victim’s statement, said inspector Ruhul Amin, investigation officer in the case.

On Thursday, the woman’s husband filed the case under the Prevention of Women & Children Repression Act at Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station accusing seven people.
The 22-year-old woman checked into a Cox's Bazar hotel on Wednesday morning with her husband and their eight-month-old baby.
In the afternoon, the family went out for a stroll on the sea beach. At Laboni point, the husband had an altercation with one of the accused - thought to be Ashiq, who has an extensive criminal record and only got out of his last stint in jail 2 weeks ago -after they accidentally bumped into each other.
What started as a small argument soon snowballed into a major altercation and the young man called his accomplices to the spot. Later in the day they kidnapped the family in two auto-rickshaws and took them to a desolate place near the golf club where three of them allegedly violated the woman.
Her ordeal did not end there. The woman was taken to Zia Guest Inn, of which arrested manager Riaz Uddin was a friend of Ashiq's, and there the three accused again took turns to rape her for hours. They released her in the early hours of Thursday and allegedly threatened to kill her family if she narrated her ordeal to anyone.
Lieutenant Colonel Khairul Islam Sarkar, commanding officer of Rab-15, said their team rushed to the family's rescue soon after they got the call from the woman. Earlier calls to 999 proved futile.

BGB member killing during UP-polls: Prime accused held
The prime accused in a case over the killing of a Border Guard Bangladesh(BGB) member during third phase UP-polls at Garagram union in Nilphamari district was arrested on Monday night.
The arrestee was identified as Md Maruf Hossain alias Auntik, son of Mosaddek Hossain who was chairman of the Union Parishad for 19 years.

After his father’s death in 2017, Maruf was elected the UP chairman.
In November 28, this year during the vote counting at Pashcim Daliram Majhpara Government School polling center BGB member Nayek Rubel Hossain was killed during a clash.
Upon the complaint of Presiding Officer of the center Lalit Chandra, a murder case was filed at the Kishorganj police station accusing 95 people and some more anonymous people.

During a drive of Rapid Action Battalion-4 (Rab) on Monday night in Ashulia area of Dhaka accused Maruf was arrested.
During primary interrogation, accused Maruf reportedly confessed to planning an attack on the day of election at the center to capture it.
He said he did it to win the election by securing all votes, said Rab-4 in a press release.

Cumilla councillor's murder: Prime accused killed in ‘gunfight’
The prime accused in the Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel murder case was killed in a gunfight in Sadar upazila in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Shah Alam, son of Janu Mia of Sujanagar upazila. Two policemen also sustained injuries in the exchange of fire, according to officials.

Acting on a tip-off, a local police team along with some detectives conducted a raid in the Chanpur Ratnabati Gumti Beribadh area of Sadar upazila around 1.30am, said Anwarul Azim, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station.
Spotting the cops, Alam and his accomplices opened fire, forcing the cops to retaliate. Alam sustained bullet wounds in the exchange of fire, while the others managed to escape.
Alam was rushed to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, police said.
"Two cops also received bullet wounds in the gunfight. One gun and some bullets were recovered from the spot," the OC said.
