Scorching heat persists in parts of Bangladesh; humidity worsens discomfort
A mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping large parts of Bangladesh including Dhaka, leaving life severely disrupted amid intense sunshine and high humidity.
The extreme weather has made daily life increasingly difficult, particularly for outdoor workers such as agricultural labourers, rickshaw pullers and construction workers who are bearing the worst of the heat.
The highest temperature was recorded at 38.5 in Dinajpur on Wednesday.
“We are constantly sweating and we are earning less. If we had enough food at home, we would not work under such conditions, but we have no choice. My income is now less than half of what it used to be,” said rickshawpuller Ahsahullah of Shahjahanpur area.
“The scorching heat wave is likely to continue for another day. However, people in the northern parts of the country may experience a slight drop in temperature from today,” BMD meteorologist Bazlur Rashid told UNB.

Hotter weather, below-normal rainfall likely in Bangladesh in June
Rainfall across Bangladesh is likely to remain below normal in June while both day and night temperatures are expected to stay above average, according to the long-range weather forecast prepared by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The forecast was finalised at a meeting of the Expert Team on Long-Range Weather Forecasting held at the Storm Warning Centre in Dhaka on Monday.
During the meeting, experts analysed various meteorological data and information from May 2026 including weather observations, upper-air weather patterns, atmospheric charts, climate model outputs, and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) associated with El Niño and La Niña conditions, said BMD.
Forecasts and guidance from World Meteorological Organization (WMO)-recognised institutes and Global Producing Centres (GPCs), including ECMWF, JMA, NOAA, IRI-Columbia University, the APEC Climate Centre (APCC), RIMES and C3S, were also taken into consideration.
According to the forecast, rainfall is likely to remain below normal across the country during June.
Meteorologists predicted that one to two low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal during the month with one of them having the potential to intensify into a monsoon depression.
The southwest monsoon is expected to set in over Bangladesh during the first half of June, it said.
The country may experience light to moderate thunderstorms on five to seven days during the month.
Both daytime and nighttime temperatures are likely to remain above normal nationwide, the forecast said.
It also indicated the possibility of two to three mild to moderate heatwaves in parts of the country.
Mild heatwaves occur when temperatures range between 36°C and 37.9°C, while moderate heatwaves are recorded when temperatures range between 38°C and 39.9°C.
The country's major rivers are expected to flow within normal levels throughout June.
However, isolated heavy rainfall may cause temporary rises in water levels in rivers across the northern, northeastern and southeastern regions.
In the agricultural outlook, experts forecast average daily evaporation rates of 3.5 to 5.5 millimetres and average daily sunshine duration of 6.0 to 8.0 hours during the month.

Bangladesh braces for several heatwaves, severe thunderstorms in May
Bangladesh is likely to experience 1-3 heatwaves including one severe heatwave (40°C–41.9°C) and thunderstorms in the current month.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued its monthly weather outlook for May, forecasting a mix of heatwaves, thunderstorms, and generally normal rainfall across the country.
The outlook was finalised during a meeting of the Expert Team on Long-Range Weather Forecasting held on Sunday at the Storm Warning Centre in Dhaka.
The team reviewed April’s weather data alongside global and regional climate indicators before preparing the forecast.
Besides, rainfall is expected to remain normal nationwide.
However, the country may witness 5 to 8 days of light to moderate thunderstorms including 2 to 3 days of severe thunderstorms accompanied by hail in some areas.
Meteorologists also predict the formation of 1 to 2 low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, with at least one having the potential to intensify into a depression or cyclone.
Both daytime and nighttime temperatures are expected to stay within normal ranges throughout May.
Major rivers across the country are also likely to maintain normal flow levels. However, temporary rises in water levels may occur in the northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions due to isolated heavy rainfall.
For the agricultural sector, BMD forecasts average daily evaporation rates of 3.5 to 5.5 mm and daily sunshine duration of 5.5 to 7.5 hours, conditions considered generally favorable for crop growth during this period.
The BMD said the forecast is based on detailed analysis of weather observations, upper-level weather patterns, various atmospheric charts, climate models, the SOI (El Niño and La Niña conditions), and May weather forecasts from WMO-recognized institutes and Global Producing Centers (GPCs) including ECMWF, JMA, NOAA, IRI-Columbia University, the APEC Climate Centre (APCC), RIMES, and C3S.
