Verdict
After reviewing the individual performances of the nominated players for their respective nations in January 2022, it is apparent that none of the contenders is a clear winner. Each player who has been nominated does have a strong case for being awarded the best cricketer of the previous month. Ebadot Hossain was outstanding in Bangladesh's one of the greatest cricket victories against New Zealand. Dewald Brevis had a fantastic tournament in the 2022 ICC Men's U19 Cricket World Cup, while Keegan Petersen was a key figure in South Africa's Test series victory over India. Therefore, it will not be an unfair decision regardless of whoever wins the January 2022 ICC Player of the Month award.

We had one goal— to beat New Zealand at their home: Ebadot
After beating New Zealand at their home as the first Asian team in the last decade, Bangladesh’s match-winner, Ebadot Hossain, said it was their goal right from the beginning of the series.
“We had one goal after arriving in New Zealand— to beat them in their soil,” Ebadot told in the post-match interview. “We have played many matches in New Zealand, but we could not get even a single win. So in this outing, we wanted to break the ice ceiling. I hope the future generation will inspire by this win.”

In the second innings of New Zealand, Ebadot bagged six wickets conceding 46 runs— the best bowling figures by a Bangladeshi pacer in away Tests. It was the first five-wicket haul for a Bangladeshi pacer after Rabiul Islam who registered a fifer in 2013.
Mominul Haque and his team completed the victory when most Bangladeshis were asleep in winter morning. But the warmth of victory swamped in before the sun rose in the Bengal delta.
Mushfiqur Rahim cut Kyle Jamieson for a four through the square region to complete the victory. Being the most experienced campaigner of the team, Mushfiqur was fittingly played the victory shot while other big guns were out of the setup due to different reasons.
Along with Ebadot, young players like Shorfiul Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy have also played important roles in Bangladesh’s historic win. Before this match, Bangladesh played a total of 32 matches in New Zealand across the format.

Pace-bowlers are like second-class citizens in the Bangladesh team when they play at home. But whenever they tour abroad, the pacers are bound to take the extra burden, but they often fail to deliver due to lack of longer version cricket in suitable conditions.
“The conditions are too flat in Bangladesh and we are still learning how to bowl away from home,” Ebadot added mentioning that the bowling coach Ottis Gibson is guiding them with proper care, and he believes the good days are coming.
Another pacer Taskin Ahmed said the win is the result of a process that they followed carefully. He said: “We did not think much about the result. We just wanted to play according to our plan. We give our 110 percent to do well.”

Ebadot’s late strike strengthens Bangladesh’s command
After an incredible day of a Test match with the help of Ebadot Hossain’s late strike, Bangladesh are hoping for something big in the ongoing Test against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui.
At the end of day four, New Zealand are leading only by 17 runs with five wickets in hand. If Bangladesh can produce another morning session as they did on day two— scalping five New Zealand wickets inside 70 runs— the visitors can hope big from this match, probably, the biggest Test win ever for them.
Ebadot, who averaged more than 80 among the bowlers who scalped at least 10 wickets in Tests, emerged largely on the fourth day afternoon taking three wickets in two consecutive overs and bringing New Zealand down to 136 from two to 136 for five, which eventually kept Bangladesh on the race of winning this match.
Bangladesh sent back Tom Latham early in the second innings as well, when Taskin Ahmed bowled a delivery outside off stumps, and Latham went to drive but only managed an inside edge which shattered his stumps. Devon Conway fell prey as Ebadto’s first wicket when New Zealand were at 63.

After that, it did seem like a boring draw was coming up. Will Young and Ross Taylor added 73 off 175 balls at the third wicket stand. But when Ebadot managed to trick Young for 69, it seemed the floodgate had opened as the pacer ran a riot after that taking the wickets of Nicholls and Blundell too.
Bangladesh could have taken Taylor too if they had not missed two easy chances— a catch by Shadman Islam and an easy-looking run-out.
New Zealand ended day four at 147 for five in 63 overs, with Ross Taylor and Rachin Ravindra for 37 and six respectively.
For Bangladesh, Ebadot bagged four wickets conceding 39 runs— his best bowling in Tests so far. And the other wicket was taken by Taskin.
Earlier, Bangladesh ended up on 458 in their first innings in 176.2 overs— the most overs played by any team in New Zealand after Pakistan’s 193.2 in 2009. In reply to New Zealand’s first innings total of 328, Bangladesh secured a 130-run lead.
In the first innings, Conway hit a ton for the hosts. And for Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque and Liton Das hit a fifty each while Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 47 for Bangladesh in Bangladesh’s first innings.

Meanwhile, Mahmudul is uncertain for the remainder of this series as he suffered a blow on his right hand that required three stitches. Bangladesh’s physio Bayejidul Islam said that the batter will undergo a seven to 10-day observation now, which eventually, made his chance to take any further part in this series lean.
