Autorickshaw driver arrested for killing security guard in Pallabi
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested an autorickshaw driver for allegedly beating a security guard to death in the capital’s Pallabi area on April 13.
The arrestee was identified as Md Sagar Sheikh Babu, 37.
Briefing reporters at the PBI Dhaka Metro (North) office in the city's West Agargaon on Saturday, Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Enayet Hossain Mannan said the victim, Salauddin, 55, worked as a security guard for Merit Security Service Private Limited and was on duty at a residential area in North Pallabi.
The incident took place around 1pm on April 13 when Sagar attempted to enter the residential area with his autorickshaw. As rickshaw entry was verbally restricted by the owners' association of the area, Salauddin barred him from entering.
An altercation ensued between the two over the issue. At one stage, Sagar allegedly assaulted Salauddin, striking him indiscriminately on the face, head and other parts of the body, leaving him critically injured and unconscious.
Locals rescued the victim and took him to a nearby private hospital, where he was admitted. He succumbed to his injuries at around 3pm the following day.
Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Halima Begum, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station on April 15.
PBI Dhaka Metro North started a shadow investigation. Using data analysis and intelligence inputs, investigators identified the suspect and conducted drives in different areas, including Shyampur, Jurain, Pallabi, Mirpur and Gabtoli.
Sensing the raids, the suspect changed locations repeatedly. However, he was eventually arrested from in front of a rickshaw garage in Mirpur Section-11 area at around 2:30am on early April 16.
Based on his statement, the autorickshaw used in the incident was also seized.
During primary interrogation, the accused confessed to assaulting the victim, which led to his death the following day. He also gave a confessional statement before the court, said the PBI official.
