No bar to Ivy's release as SC upholds HC bail in 10 cases
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the bail granted by the High Court to former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in 10 cases, paving the way for her release.
The Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, passed the order rejecting separate appeals filed by the state against the HC bail.
With the apex court order, there is no legal bar to the release of Ivy, said her lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju.
The High Court granted bail to Ivy in five of the cases on February 26 this year following separate bail petitions.
The state filed petitions with the Appellate Division seeking stay on the High Court orders of bail.
Following state’s petitions, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division on March 5 this year stayed the High Court orders and sent those petitions to the full bench for hearings.
Of the cases, four are murder cases filed at Fatullah Police Station over the killings of bus driver Abul Hossain Mizi, Abdur Rahman, Md Yasin and Parvez during the July uprising. Another case was filed at Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station on charges of assault and obstructing public servants.
The former NCC mayor was shown arrested in the five cases on November 9 last year, when she secured HC bail in five additional cases.
The state moved the Appellate Division against the HC orders when the chamber judge on November 12 stayed the bail and sent the matter to the regular bench for hearing.
Meanwhile, the High Cour on April 30 granted bail to the former NCC mayor in two other murder cases linked to the July uprising.
The HC bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order after hearing separate bail petitions.
The cases were filed at Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj on charges of killing Selim Mondal and Abdus Salam during the July 2024 uprising.
Ivy was shown arrested in the cases on March 2 and April 12 this year.
She was picked up in the early hours of May 9 last year from her residence ‘Chunka Kutir’ in Narayanganj city’s Deobhog area and later shown arrested in multiple cases.

Ex-N’ganj mayor Selina Hayat Ivy gets bail in 5 cases
The High Court on Sunday granted bail to former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Selina Hayat Ivy in five separate cases including a murder case.
The HC bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Sagir Hossain passed the order after hearing five separate petitions.
Barrister Sara Hossain and Advocate SM Hridoy Rahman stood for Ivy and Deputy Attorney General Sultana Akter Rubi represented the state.
Advocate SM Hridoy Rahman said to his knowledge, there is no legal bar to release his client from prison as she secured bail from all five cases.
On July 20 last year, Minarul Islam, a garment worker, was shot dead during the July movement in Adamzi area of Narayanganj district.
Nazmul Haque, brother of Minarul, filed a case against 132 people including Ivy with Siddhirganj Police Station on September 23, 2024.
Police arrested Ivy from her residence on May 9, 2025 in connection with the murder of Minarul Islam.
Ivy is wanted in six cases filed with Siddhirganj and Fatullah Police Stations.

NCC election: Ivy, councillors take oath of office
Newly elected mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, 36 councillors, including nine councillors of reserved seats, were sworn in on Wednesday.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined it from her official residence Ganobhaban.
Hasina administered oath to mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, while LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam administered oath to 27 councillors and nine councillors of reserved seats being present in-person at the ceremony.
Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy was elected mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation for the third consecutive term in an election held on January 16. She beat her nearest rival Taimur Alam Khondker by 66,535 votes.

Ivy, who contested the election with the symbol of "Boat", secured 1,59,097 votes to win the election against independent candidate Taimur Alam, who bagged 92,166 votes with the symbol of "Elephant".

NCC Polls: Ivy rewrites history with a hat-trick
Awami League mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy on Sunday created history as she unofficially won the high-voltage Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election for a record-breaking third time in a row.
Ivy, also the country’s first female city mayor, secured a landslide victory by defeating independent mayoral candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker with a margin of 69, 102 votes.
She bagged 1,61,273 votes while her nearest contestant Taimur Alam polled 92, 171.

Returning officer Mahfuza Akter announced the results when the vote counting completed.
With the latest victory, Ivy is the first city mayor to win the polls for the third consecutive term.
Out of the 7 mayoral candidates, Ivy contested the election with the "Boat" symbol while Taimur Alam with “Elephant” symbol.
