Bangabandhu Safari Park: In-charge, veterinary officers removed in light of zebra deaths
The officer in-charge and veterinarian oof Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur have been removed from their post in order to allow for a truly independent investigation into the deaths of 10 zebras within a short period of time recently.
As a part of the investigation, Tabibur Rahman, Assistant Forest Conservator and in-charge of the Safari Park, as well as veterinary officer Dr Hatem Sazzad Md Julkarnine were transferred to Forest Department, Dhaka, said a notification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Monday
Md Rafiqul Islam, Assistant Forest Conservator of Social Forest Department, Faridpur and Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman Veterinary Surgeon of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park, Dulahazra, Cox’s Bazar were appointed in their place.

The notice mentioned that a process is underway to also transfer Md Zahidul Kabir, project director of the park.
The 10 zebras died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Parkin the space of a month till Saturday .
Nine of the earlier population of 22 zebras in the park died between January 2 to 24, park authorities disclosed.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change formed a five-member inquiry committee to find out the cause of the zebras' deaths, and identify those responsible.
The committee was asked to submit the investigation report to the ministry within 10 (ten) working days.
The inquiry committee visited the park on Sunday and contacted foreign experts, experienced doctors to prevent such deaths of zebras.
The committee also talked to South African farm owners from where the zebras were imported.

Symptoms of possible disease and test results have been emailed to them, and a response is now expected later this week.

10 Zebras’ death: Probe panel visits Safari Park
The inquiry committee formed to investigate the death of 10 zebras at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur visited the park on Sunday.
The inquiry committee contacted foreign experts and experienced doctors to prevent such deaths of zebras.
The committee also talked to South African farm owners from where the zebras were imported.

Symptoms of disease and test results have been emailed to them, said a media release.
The members of the medical board held meetings on January 25 and 29 at the Safari Park to provide emergency medical care to zebras to prevent their death.
The safari park authorities have been taking measures as per the 10-point recommendation given by the medical board.
The 10 Zebras died within a month till Saturday at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park.
Nine of the 22 zebras in the park died between January 2 to 24 , park authorities disclosed on Tuesday.
On Saturday noon, the members of the medical board held an emergency meeting in the park.
The members of the medical board are Dr ABM Shahidullah, former curator of National Zoo, Professor Dr Rafiqul Alam, and Professor Dr Abu Hadi Md Nur Ali Khan from of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Hatem Sazzad Md Julkarnine, veterinary doctor of the safari park.

Dr Shafiul Ahad Sardar, Director of Central Veterinary Hospital and Dr Golam Ajam Chowdhury, Chief Scientific Officer of Central Disease Investigation Laboratory joined the meeting as experts.

9 Zebras die in Gazipur Safari Park in 3 weeks
Nine zebras have died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur in the last 22 days till January 24, said officials on Tuesday.
Project director Md Zahidul Kabir of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park said the zebras die from January 2 to January 24.
The matter was disclosed by the safari park authorities on Monday.
However, a meeting of a specialist team is being held on Tuesday to know the reason behind the deaths of the zebras. The meeting was continuing till the filling of this report at 2 pm.
“Those might die due to various reasons including food poisoning, virus and infection with bacteria and the actual reason behind the deaths would be known later,” said Zahidul.

He said they found zebras were being separated from the herd and then breathing problem developed in them before their death.
They also sent the samples of the dead zebras for Covid test which came out negative, he said.
The reports of liver and lung tests of the dead zebras were also in hand but there is no evidence of food poisoning, said Zahidul.
Claiming that there is no lack of security at the park, Zahidul said, “There is no scope for outsiders to enter the park and give poison. Though, we are investigating the incident keeping everything in mind.”
Already three specialists of the Veterinary Faculty of Mymensingh Agriculture University, former curator of Dhaka Zoo Mohammad Shahidullah and Gazipur District Livestock officials reached there and a board meeting will be held to investigate the matter.
