Shapovalov of Canada was Rafael Nadal's first seeded opponent in the competition. He defeated the Canadian 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 in a closely contested quarter-final encounter. Rafael Nadal overcame Italy's Matteo Berrettini in four sets in the semi-finals. He beat Berrettini 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to qualify for the title match.

According to the match statistics, Nadal won 67 percent of his first serves, while Medvedev won 70 percent. However, Nadal had a higher winning percentage in the second serve. Rafael earned 51 percent of second serves, compared to 46 percent for Medvedev.
