It’s the start of another year which means another Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. Keeping up with the tradition, Samsung has introduced its flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 series on 9th February 2022. The phone is expected to be available globally from 25th February. With the Note series now gone, there are three different models this year – the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra. Samsung has always been at the forefront of tech innovation. So does the Samsung Galaxy S22 series bring anything revolutionary? Or is it just an incremental update? Let's find out.
Key Features of Samsung Galaxy S22 Series
Design and Build Quality
The Galaxy S series has always been the flagship line of phones for Samsung. Every year, this line of phones aims to set the standard for not just Samsung, but all brands across the android platform. Needless to say, the S22 series of phones are some of the most premium ones in the market right now.
The S22 series has a relatively boxy design this time around. The edges are sharper and the overall form factor of the phones became more compact. The sharper edges give the phone a great hand feel compared to the previous iterations.

The front and back of the S22 series feature Gorilla Glass Victus+, the highest certified scratch, and shatter-resistant glass. The frame is made from Aluminum which is brushed to the tone of the device. The S22 series phones are not small or light by any means. The S22 weighs around 167 gm whereas the bigger brother S22 Ultra weighs 228 gm. But Samsung has always ensured proportioned distribution so none of the devices feels clunky on the hand.
The S22 series is as premium as things get. The glass back is a bonus upgrade from the S21 series. Everything else here is as usual. The power button and the volume rocker are situated on the right side of the phone. The sim tray is placed on the left with the Type-C cable and stereo speaker being on the bottom. The S22 Ultra has an additional built-in stylus which is carried on from the S21 Ultra.
The Display
Samsung has been the undisputed king of mobile display for quite a few years now. Not just mobile, Samsung is the largest producer of any form of display panel in the world. So naturally, the display of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series is arguably the best in the market. In fact, it is easily the most distinguishable feature of this phone.

Samsung has already dazzled the world with the S21 series displays last year. This year, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series received a minor update from the previous generation. The S22 features a 6.1-inch display with the S22+ and the S22 Ultra being a 6.6-inch and 6.8-inch panel respectively.
The Dynamic AMOLED 2X, as Samsung calls this panel, incorporates the best of AMOLED technology on a 2K panel. The colors, contrast, and sharpness are excellent with no visible color shift. Each of the panels supports HDR 10+ contents. The only minor improvement has been made on the display brightness. The S22 Ultra can now go up to 1700 nits in peak settings, 200 nits increment over the previous generation.
The Camera
The triple camera system found on the Samsung Galaxy S22 series is easily one of the best on the market. The camera features a 50 MP f/1.8 wide-angle sensor coupled with a 10 MP telephoto and a 12 MP ultrawide sensor. The S22 and S22+ feature the same camera setup with the S22 Ultra having a 108 MP main sensor.

Samsung has stacked the lenses with features. There are OIS, PDAF, and gyro-EIS for increased stability and focus. The images appear to be sharp and crisp in both indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. The telephoto and the wide-angle performs just as Samsung slated it to be. The dynamic range is also a strong suit of this camera as it can retain most of the natural colors. The front wide-angle sensor can also catch extreme details. The improvements aren’t that noticeable from the previous gen but it definitely outperforms the peers.
The camera supports up to 8K video recording. Videos are highly stabilized thanks to the EIS and OIS.
Overall, the camera sensor is right on par with other 1000-dollar flagships.

Processor and Performance
Samsung has gone with the Exynos 2200 for the European market and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for the rest of the world. Both the processors are built on the 4 Nm architecture which is incredibly powerful and efficient.
Both the Exynos and the Snapdragon chipset features an octa-core design with the Exynos having Xclipse 920 GPU and the Snapdragon having Adreno 730. The result is a superfast device that performs at lightning speed.
Samsung has come a long way from having a bloatware-filled OS full of bugs and lag. The redesigned One UI significantly trimmed down the bloatware for better performance and usability. Needless to say, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series phone absolutely nails everything that’s thrown at it. From video rendering to playing 3D games, the phone breezes through without the slightest hint of thermal throttling.

Battery and Charge Time
The S22 has a 3700 mAh battery which is a step down from the S21. Similarly, the battery has also been reduced in S22+ and S22 Ultra to 4500 mAh and 5000 mAh respectively. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
The 4 Nm processor is extremely power efficient. Users can easily get 7 to 8 hours of SoT from the devices. The long battery life is also paired with 25W and 45W fast charging and an optional 15W wireless charging. However, Samsung doesn’t include the fast-charging bricks with the devices.

Verdict
This year the Samsung Galaxy S22 series is more like an incremental update compared to other years. The S22 series refines the design elements introduced in the S21 series. The camera and the performance are on par with flagship standards. However, there are a few occasional issues with palm rejection. It can be easily fixed with a software update. Overall, it’s a great buy for those wanting to try the latest and greatest of android. But people already using the S21 series can skip this one.
