Vehicle, factory set afire amid RMG workers’ unrest in Savar, Gazipur
Vehicular movement on Chandra-Nabinagar highway in Gazipur remained suspended since Monday morning and the adjacent areas turned into a battle field as workers of two garment factories, including that of a Beximco, clashed with law enforcers over the payment of their dues.Unruly workers set a vehicle on fire on the highway in addition to torching a factory in Savar, forcing the authorities to shut a number of factories in Savar and Gazipur areas.In Gazipur, the workers of Beximco Industrial Park blocked Chandra-Nabinagar highway around 9 am demanding that their dues be cleared while the workers of Doreen garment factories took to the streets seeking reopening of their factories.Quoting workers, Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Kashimpur Police Station, said the authorities of Beximco factory failed to clear the wages of the workers after the arrest of businessman and ex-PM Hasina’s adviser Salman F Rahman.The workers of Doreen factory got agitated and staged demonstrations on the highway after they found their factory closed in the morning.On information, industrial police, police and army personnel reached the spot and tried to disperse them.A chase and counter-chase took place between workers and the law enforcers, leaving several people injured.
RMG unrest continues in Gazipur, 2 highways blocked
At one stage, the workers set fire to a vehicle.UNB Savar Correspondent reports: The workers of Beximco and Doreen factory entered the Amazon Knitwear Ltd, located in Ashulia Jirani Nabi Textile area and forced the authorities to suspend their production, said officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station Abu Bakar.At one stage, the owners and staff of the Amazon factory beat up some workers at the factory.Later, some outsiders carried out vandalism inside the factory and sent one fire that spread to the workers' colony, gutting 20 rooms.On information, firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after three hours.The workers of the Beximco factory have been staging demonstrations for the past seven days.

5 factories among 1278 closed in Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur
Only five garment factories out of 1278 in Savar, Ashulia, Gazipur are closed on Monday.
There have been no significant disruptions in the garment industry in the major hubs including Savar, Ashulia, Narayanganj, and Gazipur, according to a government source.
Only three factories out of a total of 407 in Savar and Ashulia areas remain closed while in Gazipur, two factories out of 871 are closed.

The overall operation rate in these areas is high, with 99.26% of factories open. The closure rate stands at 0.74%.
In Narayanganj, all garment factories are open.

5-yr-old boy burned to death in Savar
A five-year-old boy was burned to death in a fire which broke out at a house at Ashulia in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Sakib, son of Nizamuddin of Pandhoa area in Savar.
Palli Bidyut Samity officials injured as angry customers attack them in Savar
Station Manager of Jirabo fire station Sayem said,a fire broke out at a house at noon and spread to the three other tin-shed rooms in the area.
On information, a firefighting unit rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze around 1 pm.
111 BNP leaders, activists sued in Savar
Nur Alam Mia, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station, said the firefighters recovered the charred body of the child who was kept locked at his house as his parents went out for work leaving their child alone.
Primarily it is suspected that the fire might have originated from an electric short circuit, he said.

80 tola of gold looted from 3 Savar jewellery shops
Robbers looted 80 tola of gold from three jewellery shops at Hemayetpur in Savar early today (November 22, 2023).
Dipak Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said a group of masked robbers, with the help of three security guards, stormed three jewellery shops at Lalon Tower and Shopping Complex near Hemayetpur bus stand and looted 42 tola of gold from Sonakkhi Jewellers, 35 tola from Mamata Jewellers, and 3 tola from Gitanjali Jewellers.
The incident came to light this morning after the market was opened.

In another incident, robbers also looted mobile phone sets worth Tk 20 lakh from seven mobile phone shops in Savar Bazar bus stand.

7 youths burnt in Savar fire
Seven youths sustained burn injuries when a fire broke out at an abandoned house at Hijla village in Aminbazar of Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Friday night.
The injured were identified as Raihan, 20, Hadis, 20, Nahid, 20, Jewel, 22, Monarul, 22, Alamin, 22 and Rubel, 24.

20 injured as Daffodil University students clash with locals in Savar
Md Rakib, brother-in-law of a victim Raihan, said Raihan along with his six friends gathered at their tin-shed abandoned house in the night and at one stage a fire broke out there, leaving them injured.
Local people suspected that the fire might have originated from accumulated gas as the house remained abandoned for a long time.

200 Savar fisher families losing livelihood to Turag pollution: Speakers
Speakers at a discussion have said some 200 fisher families in Savar are to lead a miserable life, losing their main livelihood for eight months every year due to water pollution in Turag River.
They said many of the fishermen of Majhirdia village in Savar under Dhaka district are forced to stay unemployed from October-May every year due to lack of fishes in Turag River, caused by acute water pollution. So, they need to lead their life taking loans with high interest rates at the time, they added.

River and Delta Research Centre (RDRC), a non-government organization, arranged the discussion at Majhirdia village under Kaundia Union in Savar on Saturday, said a press release.
The RDRC also donated 3 water pumps at Srighat area in the village to ensure safe water for the fisher families.
Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Mihir Biswas, Secretary of Turag River Protection Committee Masum Sardar, President of Global Law Thinker Society Raoman Smita, Secretary of River Bangladesh Foysal Ahmed, coordinator of Water Keepers’ Bangladesh Sharif Jamil, writer Robiul Alam, chairman of Safe Development Foundation Ibnul Sayeed Rana, among others, spoke at the discussion presided over by RDRC chairman Mohammad Azaz.

They said a race of encroachment and pollution continues in Turag River as numerous industries and factories were built on the banks of the river. The effluents of the factories are polluting the river. So, thousands of people who are dependent on the river are losing their livelihood, they added.
The speakers said the fisher families are deprived of access to safe water due to the river pollution. The families are not getting other facilities like ‘fishing allowance’ unemployment allowance and elderly allowance, they claimed.

In this context, many fishers are changing their profession, losing their livelihood, said the environment activists.

17 deaths in Jhalakathi accident: Bus driver had a license for light vehicles, RAB says
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the driver of the bus “responsible for the deaths of 17 people” in Jhalakathi, from Ashulia in Savar early today (July 26, 2023).
The arrestee was identified as Mohon Khan, 40.
Based on information, a team of RAB-8 conducted a drive in Ashulia and arrested Mohon at the dead of night, said RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Khandaker Al Moin this morning.
17 die as bus plunges into pond in Jhalakathi; 35 injured
Moin said that Mohon used to drive heavy vehicles despite being issued a license for driving light vehicles.
Earlier on Monday, police arrested Md Foysal, supervisor of the bus, from Rajapur area of Jhalakathi district.
11 injured as another explosion rocks oil tanker in Jhalakathi’s Sugandha River
On July 22, 17 people died and 35 were injured when a bus of ‘Smriti Paribahan’ plunged into a roadside pond at Chhatrakanda in Sadar upazila of Jhalakathi district while heading towards Barishal from Pirojpur district.
Sub-inspector of Jhalakathi Police Station Sushankar filed a case against three people including the driver, supervisor and helper of the bus driver.

At least 10 hurt in clash between RMG workers and police in Savar
At least 10 people were injured when a clash broke out between ready-made garments (RMG) workers and law enforcers in Ashulia area of Savar upazila on Tuesday (May 23, 2023) as the workers blocked Baipail-Abdullahpur highway, police said.
According to the workers, the authority of Fashion Forum Limited Garment declared the garment closed indefinitely as they went on a strike and stopped working from Monday on various demands.

Observing the notice put at the gate last night, the workers started to block the Baipail-Abdullahpur highway and police intercepted them.
Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamruzzaman confirmed the matter and said that additional police have been deployed in front of the factory to avoid any untoward incident.

Prothom Alo journalist ‘picked up by law enforcement agency’
Shamsuzzaman Shams, a reporter of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, was picked up allegedly by a law enforcement agency from his Savar residence early Wednesday (March 29, 2023).
Witnesses and family members said 16 Criminal Investigation Department (CID) members in plainclothes reached in front of Shamsuzzaman’s residence in Ambagan area adjacent to Jahangirnagar University around 4:30 am.
Later, seven-eight of them entered the house of the journalist and picked him up. They took him to Savar Bottola area where they have their ‘sehri’ at Nurjahan Hotel.
Chief security officer of the university Sudipta Shaheen, and a security guard were also with them at the hotel.

They also seized a laptop, two mobile phone sets and a portable hard disc after searching the room of Shamsuzzaman.
Shamsuzzaman along with his mother has been living on the ground floor of the building in Ambagan area for the past one year. He is also the younger brother of Rabiul Karim, an assistant police commissioner who died in the Holey Artisan café attack in 2016.
At 4:45 am, the CID members again went to the house of Shamsuzzaman along with him.
Sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station Md Raju and local journalist Ariful Islam were present there.

During their stay at the house for 5-7 minutes, Shamsuzzaman was asked to take some clothes.
Later they again left the house with Shamsuzzaman.
A police officer also told owner of the house Ferdous Alam that Shamsuzzaman wrote a report against the state and he was detained for interrogation.
Azad Rahman, additional superintendent of CID (media), said “I have no idea about it and there is no information of any case filed against him.”

Md Quamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, said he was not informed about the detention of Shamsuzzaman. “Investigation is on to find out Shamsuzzaman,” he said.

3 workers die from inhaling septic tank’s toxic gas in Savar
Three workers died after inhaling toxic gas of a septic tank at Shimultala Dargarpar in Ashulia of Savar on Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as Mithu, Rakib and Mohammad Ali — workers of a factory of Al Rahman Knit Fashion BD Ltd.
Momenul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, said cleaner Mithu along with two workers went into the septic tank of the factory at 3 pm.

Getting no response from them for a long time, the authorities concerned of the factory informed the local fire service.
A team of fire service personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of the three workers around 9 pm.
“Police are investigating the incident and legal steps will be taken after investigation,” said OC.
