Two youths injured in Khulna gun attack
Two youths were shot and injured in a gun attack by unidentified miscreants in Khulna city on Tuesday night.
The injured, Monir Howlader and Hanif Howlader, are now undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Quoting locals, Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station, said a group of miscreants riding motorbikes stopped in front of Nirala Talukdar Community Centre and opened fire on the duo from close range around 9:30pm, leaving them critically injured.

The attackers fled the scene when locals rushed out after hearing the victims’ screams, the OC said.
He added that the incident might have been linked to a dispute over drug peddling, as Monir is an accused in two drug-related cases.
Police have launched a drive to arrest those involved in the attack, the OC said.

4 fishermen fined for catching hilsa in Sirajganj’s Jamuna River
A mobile court on Monday fined four fishermen Tk 30,000 for illegally catching hilsa in the Jamuna River in violation of the government ban in Chauhali upazila of Sirajganj.
The fined fishermen were identified as Jakir Molla, 55, and Momin Molla, 22, of Umarpur village; Yamin, 20; and Shahabuddin, 45, of Dakkhin Jotpara village.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mostafizur Rahman conducted drives in Bridashuria, Poyla, Dattakandi, Umarpur, and Phulhara areas of the Jamuna River and detained the fishermen for defying the ban.
15 sentenced for illegal hilsa fishing in Padma River
Later, the mobile court imposed fines on them and released them after payment.
Around 1.5 lakh meters of fishing nets were seized and burnt, while the confiscated hilsa fish were distributed among local poor people.
Upazila Fisheries Officer Tanvir Hasan Majumder, members of the river police, and Ansar personnel were present during the drive.

15 sentenced for illegal hilsa fishing in Padma River
A mobile court in Louhajang, Munshiganj, sentenced 15 people to varying terms of imprisonment for illegally catching mother hilsa fish in the Padma River.
In the first operation conducted early Tuesday, eight individuals were arrested, and authorities seized 10 kilograms of hilsa and 30,000 meters of illegal current nets.
The court sentenced each of the eight to eight days of simple imprisonment.
During a second operation from 10 am to 2 pm, seven more people were detained, and 150,000 meters of illegal current nets were confiscated. Each of the seven was sentenced to ten days of simple imprisonment.
Louhajang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Nesar Uddin said, “Some unscrupulous fishermen were illegally hunting hilsa during the banned season. The operations targeted areas of the Padma River including Gaudia, Kolma, Sidarchar, and Bejgaon.”
Senior Fisheries Officer Md. Rezaul Islam stated that the mobile court proceedings were conducted by Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Masud Parvez from the District Commissioner’s office.

The seized fish were distributed among orphans in local madrasas, while the confiscated nets were destroyed by fire.
The convicted individuals have been sent to Munshiganj District Jail.

Khulna sets new instance in land administration postings through lottery system
Khulna Divisional Commissioner Firoz Sarkar has initiated a transparent and corruption-free system for posting Assistant Commissioners (Land) and surveyors for the first time in the country.
A fair lottery-based selection process has been introduced in the division instead of the long-practiced malpractice of trading lucrative upazila postings.
The postings were conducted in the presence of civil society members, citizen representatives, and journalist leaders to ensure full transparency.
According to government rules, officers were not posted in their home districts or, if married, in their in-laws’ districts.

Man stabbed dead in Chuadanga clash
A man was killed and three others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Gobindahuda village in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Joynur, 53 of the village.
Quoting local people, Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Model Police Station, said there had been longstanding enmity between Nurul Haque Peshkar and Masud Billah Mantu group over the ownership of a piece of land.
Youth stabbed dead in Jahsore
As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of both groups attacked each other with starp weapon around 8:30 am, leaving four people including Joynur injured.
Later, they were taken to Sadar Hospital where Joynur succumbed to his injuries.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.

Sirajganj Jamaat leader dies in road accident
Sirajganj, Oct 13 (UNB) — Abul Kalam Biswas, 50, Naib-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami in Raiganj upazila, Sirajganj, was killed in a motorcycle accident on Monday night.
The accident occurred around 8 pm on the Dhaka-Bogura highway near Chonka Bazar in Sherpur upazila, Bogura, as Biswas was returning home alone after attending a Jamaat education camp in Bogra.
He reportedly lost control of his motorcycle and collided with the road divider.
Local residents rescued him and rushed him to Bogura’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way.

Biswas was also the convener of the Raiganj Press Club and a resident of Simla Biswaspara village in Raiganj.
Confirming the incident, In-Charge of Sherpur Highway Police Camp, Inspector Md. Azizul Islam, said, “The body was recovered from the site and handed over to the family as there were no complaints. A case has been filed at the concerned police station.”

Five bodies recovered from separate places in Manikganj
Police recovered the bodies of five people from separate places in Manikganj district between Monday morning and noon.
The deaths were reported from Manikganj Sadar, Ghior, Singair, and Saturia upazilas, police said.
In Manikganj Sadar upazila, police recovered the hanging body of Abu Hanif, 28, from a rented house in the West Dashra area of Manikganj town around noon.
Hanif, hailing from Chauddagram upazila in Cumilla, was found dead after police, acting on a call from his ex-wife, broke into the room with the help of locals, said Aminul Islam, OC (Investigation) of Manikganj Sadar Police Station.
His body was sent to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy and legal proceedings are underway, added the OC.
In in Sadar Upazila, the body of an unidentified middle-aged man, believed to be mentally challenged, was found near Manikganj Medical College Hospital in Joyra area.
In Ghior upazila, the hanging body of Sona Mia, 40, was recovered from Deobhog area of Singjuri union in the morning.
OC Kohinur Islam of Ghior Police Station said the deceased had visited his sister’s son-in-law’s house on Sunday night. His body was found there the next morning.
He added that Sona Mia’s wife was killed in Dhaka during the July uprising last year.
In Singair upazila, Rozina Akhter, 32, died allegedly after consuming poison.
Rozina, wife of Aynal Mia from Deuli area of Joymantop union, was admitted to Manikganj Medical College Hospital in critical condition on Sunday night.
She died during treatment early Monday, according to a medical officer.
Her body was also sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Mother, two children found dead in Manikganj
Meanwhile, in Saturia upazila, Russell Mahmud, an employee of Incepta Pharmaceuticals, died after being struck by a falling plastic drum from the roof of a factory building on Sunday night.
Russell, son of the late Idris Ali from Ruhulli area of Sadar upazila in Jamalpur, sustained severe injuries and was taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital where he died.
Shahinul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Saturia Police Station, said an investigation is underway and legal steps will be taken based on the findings.

Couple killed in Munshiganj road crash
A couple was killed and three others, including a child, were injured when a bus collided with a battery-operated rickshaw on Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Gozaria in Munshiganj district on Monday morning.
The deceased were identified as Billal Hossain, 65, and his wife Alema Begum, 50, of Dandi Luterchar village in Meghna Upazila of Cumilla.
Gozaria Bhaberchar Highway Police Station in-charge Md. Shawkat Hossain said the Dhaka-bound bus from Motlob near Anarpura bus stand rammed the auto-rickshaw carrying Billal Hossain and his family, leaving five people injured.
Woman killed ‘by husband’ in Jhenaidah
Locals rescued the victims and took them first to Gozaria Upazila Health Complex and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Alema Begum died around 11 am on the way to Dhaka and Billal Hossain died after arriving at the hospital, he added.
Shawkat Hossain said locals detained bus driver Kausar Hossain along with the bus and handed him over to police.
Legal action will be taken, he added.

Woman killed ‘by husband’ in Jhenaidah
A woman was killed allegedly by husband after a family dispute in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Taslima Khatun, 27, wife of carpenter Lal Mia of Gopinathpur village in Jhenaidah municipality.
Locals said the couple locked into an argument over taking drugs by Lal Mia on Sunday morning.
Then Lal Mia went to his furniture shop and did not return home to have lunch.
Mother killed, daughter injured in fatal road crash in Jhenaidah
Later in the afternoon, when Taslima went to the shop but did not return for a long time.
As their minor son Rajon did not find his parents at home, he returned to the shop and found his mother’s hair there and informed locals.
Officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station said breaking open the shop they recovered the body. Lal Mia went missing after the incident.
Efforts are underway to arrest Lal Mia, he added.

Six die after reportedly consuming toxic liquor in Chuadanga
Six people have died and another is critically ill after reportedly consuming toxic liquor between Thursday and Sunday in the Dingedah area of Chuadanga Sadar Upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Kheder Ali, 40, a van driver from Nafarkanti village; Mohammad Selim, 40, a fish trader from Khejura village; Mohammad Laltu alias Ripu, 30, a van driver from Pirojkhali village; Mohammad Shahid, 45, a worker from Shankarchandra village; Mohammad Samir, 55, a mill worker from Dingedah village; and Sardar Mohammad Laltu, 52, also a worker from Dingedah village.
Another individual, Alim Uddin, a daily wage earner from the same area, is undergoing treatment at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
Jamal Al Naser, additional superintendent of police (Crime and Operations) in Chuadanga, said a group of individuals reportedly consumed alcohol together in the Dingedah Bazar area on Thursday night.
“One by one, six of them died. The matter came to light when the last victim passed away at the hospital on Sunday,” he said.
