Trade union protests ban on rally near Ctg port
The Bangladesh Trade Union Sangha on Sunday condemned the month-long ban on rallies, meetings, and human chains around the Chattogram Port area.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Friday announced a prohibition on all kinds of gatherings and processions within the port and its surrounding areas from October 11 for the next one month.
In a joint statement sent to the media, the organisation’s president Chowdhury Ashikul Alam, and general secretary Rajat Biswas urged the authorities to immediately withdraw the restriction and ensure citizens’ democratic right to assemble and express opinions freely.
The leaders said that cargo transport at the port has been continuing as usual and argued that there was no justification for curtailing public gatherings.
If the authorities feel the need to improve transport management, they can do so without infringing on people’s democratic rights, they said.
