3 workers die after inhaling ‘toxic gas’ in Munshiganj septic tank
Three construction workers died after inhaling toxic gas from a septic tank in Khaleast of Munshiganj district town on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Ibrahim, Firoz and Shahin.
Deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service, Shafiqul Islam, said a worker entered into the septic tank with 10 feet depth of an under-constructed building at Aftab Plaza alley in the morning.
Getting no response from the worker, two more workers got into it but fell unconscious.
Later, local people informed the matter to the local Fire Service, who recovered the bodies of three workers.
Mohammad Firoz, additional superintendent of Munshiganj Police, said initially it is suspected that the workers died due to inhaling toxic gas inside the tank.

Section 144 imposed at CU amid violence
The local administration imposed section 144 in and around Chittagong University (CU) area following the fresh clash between the CU students and local people over the manhandling of a female student on Sunday.
Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdullah AL Mumin slapped the ban on Sunday afternoon.
The restriction was imposed on the east side of No 2 gate of Chittagong University to rail gate on the eastern side of the university area under Fatehpur union of the upazila from 2 pm to 12 am on Monday.
The local administration imposed the emergency section to maintain the law-and-order situation and protect the public life and property.
All kinds of movement, gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and carrying of all arms and sharp weapons were prohibited during the period, said the notice issued by the local administration.
Earlier, in the day, at least 50 people, including the vice-chancellor and proctor of CU, were injured in fresh clashes between the students of the university and local people.
Professor Kamal Uddin, Pro-Vice Chancellor and proctor Tanvir Mohammad Hayder Arif were injured in the clash.
CU VC, proctor among 50 injured in fresh clashes; exams suspended
Students said the clash broke out around 12:45 pm in the No 2 gate of the north residential area of the university when a group of local people hurled brick chips targeting students without any provocation, triggering a chase-and-counter chase that left 50 people injured.
The whole area turned into a battlefield.
The students also claimed that members of the army personnel were seen on the campus earlier in the morning but left after conducting a brief operation. The clash began shortly after their departure.
Meanwhile, the authorities concerned have suspended all ongoing examinations of all departments of the university following the clash.
Over 30 CU students injured in clash with locals; army deployed
“Many students who were injured in the attack by locals had scheduled exams today. Considering the situation, all examinations have been postponed,” said CU Pro-Vice Chancellor Kamal Uddin.
Earlier, on Saturday, an argument broke out between a student of the Philosophy Department and a guard of her rented house over opening the gate when she reached there shortly before midnight.
At one point, the guard allegedly assaulted the girl physically.
When other students gathered to protest the incident and tried to detain the guard a scuffle took place between them and local people.
At one stage, an announcement from local mosques was made calling residents to gather and attack, while students also mobilised through announcements from the CU Suhrawardy Hall mosque, triggering a fierce clash that left 50 people injured.
Students also claimed that the local people attacked some students with sharp weapons during the clash.
Among the injured, 20 to 21 were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

‘Thief’ killed in lynch-mob attack in Natore
A suspected thief was killed in a lynch-mob attack at Nepaldighi village in Natore Sadar upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Nabi Ali, 50, of Bagha upazila of Rajshahi. He had been living at his in-laws’ house in nearby Islabari village for a long time.
Locals said Nabi Ali stole valuables from the house of one Idris Ali in the village and when he tried to enter the house of Abdul Awal villagers caught him.
They beat him up mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body in the morning.
They sent the body to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Natore Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahabur Rahman said they are investigating the death.

Illegal arms factory busted in Ctg’s Sitakunda; 4 held
Army personnel have busted an arms manufacturing factory at Salimpur in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram and arrested four suspected criminals along with arms.
Tipped off, joint force members led by Lt Col Ismail Sams Azizi, commander of Sindukchhari Zone under Guimara Region’s 20 Field Regiment Artillery, conducted the drive on Saturday night and arrested them.
The seized arms included six locally-made firearms, 35 empty cartridges, five live cartridges, one Chinese axe, 20 machetes, two walkie-talkies with a charger, a megaphone, and various other equipment used in making arms.
The detainees were Kamrul Hasan Redwan, 50, son of Fayez Ahmed of Banshkhali in Chattogram, Md Ashik, 25, son of Md Morshed of Salimpur in Sitakunda; Ruman, 45, son of Md Nurul Alam of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar; and Md Amir Islam, 40, son of Joynal Abedin of Dakkhin Hatiya in Noakhali.
Later, the army handed them over to Sitakunda Model Police Station along with the seized arms and equipment.
Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozibur Rahman said cases were filed against the arrestees and they were sent to jail.

Man killed in inter-family dispute over ducks in Sylhet
A man was killed and his two brothers seriously injured in a familial clash over dead ducks in Kanaighat of Sylhet.
The deceased, Saidur Rahman, 35, died Saturday morning at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
His brothers, Farid Ahmed, 25, and Abdur Rahman, 29, were still under medical observation.
The attack took place Friday in Shahapur village, Dighirpar East Union, when Saidur, Farid, and Abdur were returning home after Friday prayers.
They were attacked with knives, sickles, and sticks by their uncle Imran Ahmed, 30, his mother Lechu Begum, and father Rokib Ali, 65.
3-year-old killed by mentally unstable mother
The dispute began after Farid’s 10 ducks entered Imran’s field, and 7 died due to pesticide.
Police have arrested Rokib Ali and Imran Ahmed.
Abdul Awal, Officer-in-Charge of Kanaighat Police said that they were searching for others involved, and the deceased’s family was preparing to file a case.
The body was handed to the family after postmortem, he added.

3-year-old killed by mentally unstable mother
A three-year-old boy was killed by his mentally unstable mother in Shantinagar area of Khagrachari town early Saturday.
The incident happened around 1am and the mother, Sabina Yasmin Bani, 28, herself informed the landlord about the incident after it occurred.
The child’s father, Mostafizur Rahman, works at a local pharmaceutical company.
The child’s uncle, Md. Mofizur Rahman, said that Sabina Yasmin had been suffering from mental health issues for a long time and had been under treatment since the birth of her first child.
UPDF activist shot dead in Khagrachari
Police recovered the body from the house and sent it to Khagrachari Modern District Hospital and took Sabina Yasmin into their custody.
Abdul Baten Mridha, Officer-in-Charge of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident and said that legal action were underway.

National Youth Championship kicks off in Munshiganj
The Festival of Youth National Football Championship 2025 officially began on Saturday at Munshiganj Stadium, marking a vibrant beginning to a nationwide celebration of youth and football.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) organised the event with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The opening match between Munshiganj and Madaripur set the tone for the championship, which will feature 64 district teams competing across 8 zones.
The tournament structure includes home-and-away qualifiers, followed by knockout rounds leading to the grand final in November.
Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, along with senior officials from BFF and the ministry, were present at the opening ceremony.
The event featured cultural performances, youth showcases, and the unveiling of the official championship logo, said a media release issued by the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
This championship is a flagship initiative under the Festival of Youth 2025, reflecting the Interim Government’s commitment to youth empowerment, sports development and national unity.
With 112 matches scheduled across the country, the tournament is expected to reignite district-level football and uncover new talent.

Jatiya Party office vandalised in Rajshahi
A local office of Jatiya Party was vandalised allegedly by NCP activists in Rajshahi city protesting attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur on Friday night.
A group of people under the banner of ‘Anti-fascist Jatiya Oikya’ led by Mobasher Ali, chief coordinator of Rajshahi city unit National Citizen Party (NCP) brought out a procession around 12 am on Friday from Shaheb Bazar Zero point in the city protesting the attack on Nur.
They vandalised the local office of Jatiya Party at Ganakpara of the city and set some valuables of the office on fire, said witnesses.
Meanwhile, a group of Rajshahi University (RU) students under the banner of ‘Rajshahi University Anti-Discrimination Students’ brought put procession from the campus around 11 am and blocked Rajshahi-Dhaka highway, halting vehicular movement.
Abul Kalam, officer-in-charge of Boalia Model Police Station, said police are investigating the attack on the JaPa office and legal action will be taken after getting complaints.
Earlier on Friday, a clash broke out between activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad and Jatiya Party in the capital’s Kakrail area.
As tensions escalated, police and army personnel charged batons, leaving Nur and several others injured.

Kishoreganj’s ‘Pagla Mosque’ collects 32 sacks of donation
Authorities have collected 32 sacks of cash and gold from the donation boxes of historic ‘Pagla Mosque’ in Kishoreganj on Saturday morning after four months and 17 days since the last count.
The nine donation boxes were opened around 7am in the presence of Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) and President of Pagla Mosque Management Committee Fouzia Khan and Superintendent of Police Hasan Chowdhury.
A team of nearly 500 people including members of the mosque management committee, teachers and students of the madrasha and orphanage situated within the mosque complex took part in the counting process.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Kishoreganj, Mizabe Rahmat, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Mohammad Nahid Hasan Khan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Jesmin Akhtar, Sadar upazila UNO Kamrul Hasan Maruf, and Assistant General Manager (AGM) of Rupali Bank Mohammad Ali Haresi, along with 220 students of the historical Jamia Imdadiya Madrasa, 120 students from the Nurul Quran Hafizia Madrasa of Pagla Mosque, 100 staff members of the bank, 34 members of the mosque committee, and 20 members of the law enforcement agency participated.

2 minor girls drown in lake in Sherpur
Two young girls drowned while collecting water lilies in a lake in Sherpur on Friday.
The victims, 9-year-old Fahima Akter Nun and 8-year-old Jemy, went to Baleshwar Lake in Chakpara area of Gazirkhamar Union around 10 am and did not return home, prompting family members to search for them.
Their bodies were recovered from the middle of the lake with the help of locals around noon.
According to locals, the girls fell into a deep part of the pond while picking flowers.
Decomposed body of missing schoolgirl found in Sherpur
Zubaidul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident and said legal action were underway.
He also added that the families of the victims requested to hand over the bodies without autopsy.
