Two brothers attacked in Chattogram, one dies
A 40-year-old man was killed while his brother sustained serious injuries when a group of assailants attacked them with sharp weapons in the district's Hathazari upazila Friday night.
Police and family members of the victims attributed the attack to a financial dispute pertaining to a local madrasa in the Kala Badshahpara area of Mirzapur union of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Hossain Elahi, 40, son of Lotu Mistri. His brother, Momen Elahi, sustained serious injuries in the attack.
According to locals, the two brothers were having tea at a tea shop in the area when the assailants suddenly fired at them and then attacked them with sharp weapons.

The two seriously injured brothers were rushed to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex from where they were shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Hossain died of his injuries at 10.30pm.
Mohsin, the brother-in-law of the deceased, said the attack came in the wake of a financial dispute at the local madrassa.
Hathazari Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said that "efforts are on to nab the accused".

48-yr-old man beaten to death over suspected illicit affair in Ctg
A 48-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by another man on the suspicion that he was having an extramarital affair with the latter's ex-wife in Chattogram port city, police said.
The deceased was identified as Abu Taher, a resident of the Patenga area. The accused has been arrested, police said Saturday.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Patenga Police Station, said that the accused, Abdul Jalil, divorced his wife Roushan last month over a family feud.

"Recently, Jalil (40) went to Roushan’s house and desired his wish to remarry her.
During his visit to Roushan’s house, Jalil suspected that she was having an extra-marital affair with Taher," the OC said.
On Thursday night, Jalil, along with two of his aides, went to Taher’s house and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. An injured Taher was rushed to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, where he died of his injuries on Friday night.

Two motorcyclists killed in Manikganj road crash
Two motorcyclists were killed after an unidentified vehicle hit their motorbike on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj BSCIC industrial area around 9:30 pm on Friday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Habibur Rahman Habu, 36, son of Thandu Mia of Nayadingi area of Dhankora union of Saturia upazila, and Anowar Hossain, 35, son of Lal Chan Mia of Rajibpur area in Manikganj Sadar.
Deceased Anowar Hossain’s brother Abdul Hamid said that Anowar was a cattle trader. Two persons, including his brother, were killed after being hit by a vehicle on their way home in Manikganj BSCIC industrial area.
Police have recovered the bodies and kept them at the Highway Police Station, said Monirul Islam, OC of Golra Highway Police Station.

Body of teen who went missing after bulkhead sank in Mongla recovered
The body of a missing teenager has been recovered a month after a coal-laden bulkhead sank in Poshur channel at Mongla in Bagerhat.
The deceased was identified as Zihad Hossain, 17, son of Alam Hawladar of Pirojpur district. He used to work as a cook of the bulkhead.
Police said the body was found floating after collecting coal from the sunk bulkhead on Friday afternoon.
The body was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for an autopsy, said SI Bishwajit Mukherjee of Mongla Police Station.
Earlier, three bodies were recovered who went missing in this incident.
So far, four bodies have been recovered.
On November 15, five crew members went missing after a coal-laden bulkhead ship capsized in the Poshur river near Mongla Port following a collision with a merchant vessel.
Though two of the crew members managed to swim to safety, others went missing. One of them is still missing.

Sirajganj to get world’s first 'digital dustbin'
The world's first digital dustbin has been set up in the Mujib Road area of Sirajganj district town.
“An automatic digital dustbin machine was set up in front of Bhasani College in the town at the initiative of Municipal Mayor Syed Abdur Rauf Mukta,” our local correspondent reports.
The municipal mayor will officially inaugurate this digital dustbin within 2/1 days.
This device was invented by Mostafa Kamal Tara, editor of the local daily Jamuna Prabaha.
Mostafa Kamal Tara said that this is the first digital dustbin in the world, there is no such dustbin anywhere in the world. This dustbin will remove the stench of garbage and will change the image of the town, Tara said.
He said he would send proposals to city corporations around the world, including Japan and Taiwan, to install eco-friendly dustbins.
He also said this dustbin has been made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh and the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujib. “It took about 6 months to prepare.
The machine was fixed at Tk 6 lakh with a 1-year guarantee and 4-year warranty, he said.
The municipality has ordered four more digital dustbins and will install them at several important locations in the city, he added.

AL member killed in Bagerhat
Bagerhat, Dec 17 (UNB)— An Awami League member was killed and three others were injured in an attack by a rival group over establishing supremacy at Rampal area of Bagerhat on Friday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Firoz Dhali, 45, son of Ashad Ali of Kastobaria area of Rampal Upazila while the injured were Awrongojeb,42, Hanif,38, and Akram Dhali of Kadirkhali area.
Former general secretary of Rampal Upazila Awami League Jamil Hasan Jamu said, “I was dropped off at the gate of the house around 10:30 am and four people including Firoz Dhali were going towards their house. After a while, 30-40 people including Bellal Bepari and his brother Baki attacked, leaving them injured”.
Injured Firoz was taken to Rampal Upazila health complex.

Later, he was shifted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Rampal Police Station, Md. Shamsuddin said they have detained 6 people for questioning over this incident.
Police have been deployed in the area to avoid any further unwanted situations, he said. “Police have started work to bring the culprits under the law”.

Sylhet road crash kills 2 tourists
Two motorcyclists were killed when a truck hit their bike on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway at Gucchagram area in Gowainghat Upazila on Friday noon.
The deceased were identified as Yusuf,30, son of Rahmat Ullah from Jagannathpur village in Chandpur and Sohel, 28.
Parimal Chandra Dev, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gowainghat Police Station, said they along with friends were coming to visit Jaflong from Chandpur. When they reached the Guchhagram area, a truck hit them, leaving Sohel dead on the spot.

Injured Yusuf was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The bodies were kept in the hospital morgue, the OC added.
The truck was seized in the incident. However, the driver and helper managed to flee.

Furniture factory in Naogaon catches fire
A furniture factory and its showroom in the Kathaltoli area of Naogaon caught fire on Friday noon.
According to the local fire service office, the fire at ‘Samrat Furniture’ occurred around 1:30pm.
Five firefighting units brought the blaze under control at about 3pm after an hour of efforts, said Md Shafiqul Islam, senior in-charge of Naogaon Fire Service.

The officer suspected that electric short-circuits might cause the fire. No casualty was reported.
Asked about the extent of damage caused by the fire, he said it is yet to be assessed.

However, the factory owner claimed that goods worth Tk 1 crore were gutted.

3 die in auto-truck collision in Brahmanbaria
Three persons travelling in an autorickshaw were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision with a truck in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria early on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Jahangir Mia, 35, Mahfuz Mia, 32, and Amzad, 30, all brick kiln workers and residents of Shahbajpur village. The auto driver was among the injured.
The accident occurred around 6am on the highway near the Boishamura area when four brick kiln workers were on their way to their plant in the auto, said Md Shahjalala Alam, officer-in-charge of Shahbajpur bus stand highway police station.

The impact of the head-on collision between the auto and the truck coming from the opposite direction was such that three of the occupants died on the spot, the OC said.
A probe has been ordered into the accident, he added.

Teen killed as bike ride turns fatal for 3 minors in Chandpur
A bike ride to a local market in Chandpur turned tragic for three friends, all minors, on Thursday noon as their bike crashed into a tree, killing one on the spot and injuring two others.
The accident occurred near the Badarpur area on the Hajiganj-Kachua-Gouripur road of Hajiganj upazila.
The deceased was identified as Osman Gani, son of Tajul Islam of Mulpara village in Faridganj upazila. Arif Hossain,17, and Rony,17, his friends from Mokimabad village -- are being treated at a hospital.
"The three friends were going to Hajiganj Bazar on the bike when the one riding it lost control of the two-wheeler and rammed a roadside tree, leaving all of them severely injuries," said Harun Ur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj police station.
Locals rescued the three and took them to Upazila Health Complex, where Gani was declared dead on arrival. "The two injured have been shifted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital," said Dr Shoeb Ahmed Chishti, chief medical officer of Upazila Health Complex.
The body of the deceased was sent for an autopsy, said OC Harun.
