Bangladeshi shot dead ‘by BSF’ along Lalmonirhat border
A Bangladeshi man was shot dead and another injured allegedly by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) members early Thursday near the border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district.
The deceased was identified as Rezaul Karim, 42, son of Monsur Ali of Jagatber union in the upazila and the injured was identified as Jumman Babu,30.

The incident occurred along Samshernagar border in the upazila, said Omar Fauk, Officer-in-Charge of Patgram police station.
According to locals, some local youths went to India-Bangladesh border’s no-man’s-land area in the early hours of Thursday.
Rezaul died on the spot when BSF members fired at them, they said.

Babu, who suffered injuries, was allegedly picked up by BSF troops while others managed to flee.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) did not comment on the matter. BGB sources, however, said they will brief the media formally later.

BCL leader stabbed to death in Rangamati
A district-level leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was stabbed to death by assailants in Rangamati district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Joy Tripura, deputy publicity secretary of Rangamati district Chhatra League.

Eye-witnesses said the assailants waylaid Joy and stabbed him indiscriminately at the entrance of Rangamati Sadar Hospital in Sadar upazila around 2.30am before escaping in the dark.
He was immediately rushed to Rangamati Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station, said that "efforts are on to identify and nab the perpetrators of the crime".

Mistaken for robber, man beaten to death in Gaibandha
A man who went to meet his ex-wife in Gaibandha was allegedly lynched to death by an angry mob Thursday on suspicion of being a robber.
The deceased was identified as Sakhawat Hossain, son of Abdur Razzak of Gaibandha town.
Police said that local residents mistook Sakhawat as a robber and thrashed him to death when he went to Tari village in Kholahati of Sadar upazila to meet his former wife in the early hours of the day.

Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station, said, "His ex-wife Shiuli's husband Bayejid Islam came to know that Sakhawat had come to meet her secretly in Tari and alerted locals."
The residents thrashed the victim, suspecting him to be a robber, leaving him critically injured, said the OC.
Sakhawat was rushed to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital where he died of his injuries. "Shiuli and her husband have been detained in connection with the death," the OC added.

Napa syrup row: Mother held for killing kids in B’baria
Police on Thursday arrested on murder charges the mother of the two siblings who died after consuming Napa syrup in Brahmanbaria.
The deaths of the two children shook the entire country and raised a question over the quality of Napa syrup.

Police claimed that Lima Begum had killed her two children over an extra-marital affair.
"Our team nabbed Lima, the mother of the two children, from her house in Ashuganj upazila of the district this morning," said additional superintendent of Brahmanbaria Police, Molla Mohammad Shaheen.
The arrest came following an investigation which revealed that Lima had developed an illicit affair with a man, named Shafiullah, while working at a local rice mill, the police officer told the media.
"Lima and the man wanted to get married. And to make their plan successful, Lima offered sweetmeat laced with poison to her two children, which caused their deaths," Shaheen said.
While Lima has admitted her guilt during questioning, efforts are on to arrest Shafiul, said Shaheen.
Ismail Khan, the father of the two children, had lodged a complaint at the Ashuganj police station, following the deaths of their two children. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered by police.
On March 10, the two siblings -- Yasin Khan, 7, and Morsalin Khan, 5 -- allegedly died after consuming Napa syrup at their home as they were down with high fever.
It was bought from the local ‘Ma Pharmacy’ owned by Main Uddin.
The children were discharged after being given primary medications at District Sadar Hospital. Yasin died on the way home, and Morsalin after reaching home, the family said.

Two probe bodies have been formed in this connection, while samples of the syrups of the same batch were collected for testing.
After testing, officials of the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) on Monday said the batch of the Napa syrup was found to be "safe".

3-year-old dies in Bhairab fire
A three-year-old child was killed as fire broke out at a house in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab on Wednesday afternoon.
Deceased Tahiya Begum, daughter of Dulal Mia of Banshgari village of the upazila, was inside the house when fire broke out.
According to the locals the fire originated from a cooking stove next to the house.
On information, members of fire services reached the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour of effort.
But the house was gutted to ashes and when injured Tahiya was rushed to the hospital the doctor on duty declared her dead.

Couple killed in Madaripur road crash
A couple was killed in a road crash in Madaripur’s Lakepar area as a truck collided head-on with a motorcycle on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Monirul Islam, 35, Grameen Bank's Domsar branch manager in Shariatpur and his wife Farzana Islam, 30, central manager of the same bank.
They were heading to Shariatpur’s Domsar in a motorcycle that was hit by the truck at around 7.30 pm in front of Lakerpar Children's Park on Madaripur-Shariatpur road. The couple died on the spot, locals said.
Madaripur Sadar Hospital resident medical officer Dr Shahriar Shakil said that the bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue.

College student killed in Barishal road crash
A college student was killed after a private car collided head-on with a motorcycle in front of Barishal divisional public library on Wednesday evening, police said.
The deceased was identified as Md Nadeem, a third year student of Government Syed Hatem Ali College and son of Moinirul Islam of Bilbabari area of Kashipur. He worked for a company called Eurotel BD.
Md. Akramuzzaman, sub-inspector of Barishal Kotwali Model Police Station, said that Nadeem was going home from the examination center Brajamohan College after his third year Honors examination. On his way a private car collided with Nadeem's motorcycle in front of the public library on Brajmohan College road.
When taken to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he said.
The body, kept in the hospital morgue, will be handed over to the family after an autopsy, he added.

DMP bans crackers ahead of Shab-e-Barat
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) imposed a ban on carrying explosives, crackers and explosion of firecrackers in the areas of its jurisdiction in the capital ahead the holy Shab-e-Barat to be observed on Friday next.
DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam enforced the restriction under section 28 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance-1976 (Ord. No. III of 1976), for maintaining the sanctity and ensuring peaceful observation of the Shab-e-Barat, said an official release of DMP on Wednesday.

The ban will come into force from 6:00pm Friday (March 18) and remain effective till 6am on Saturday (March 19).
Shab-e-Barat will be observed across the country on the night of March 18. It is observed on the 15th night of the Arabic month of Sha'ban. Muslims offer special prayers, recite the Holy Quran, and take part in other religious rituals on Shab-e-Barat.

2 killed C’nawabganj road crash
Two people were killed in collision between a motorbike and a goods-carrying truck at Kharakpur in Shibganj upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Nazmul Islam Sumon, 35, son of late Liaquat Ali of Dhobra village and Momin, 19, son of Abu Bakkar of Namo Koyladiar village of the upazila.

Chowdhury Jobayer Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibganj police station, said the motorcycle collided with a Kansat-bound goods-laden truck in Kharakpur area around 11am, leaving two people seriously injured.
Later, they were rushed to the Shibganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared motorcyclist Sumon dead.
Momin, the truck driver, died while undergoing treatment there, he added.

Elderly woman in Ctg falls to death from terrace
A 65-year-old woman died after allegedly falling off the terrace of her three-storey building in Patiya upazila of Chattogram district Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Sanwara Begum, wife of Ayub Ali of the Patiya municipality area.

The woman's family members told the local police that Sanawara went to the terrace at 10.30am for spraying water on her plants. She allegedly slipped and fell down.
Sanawara was rushed to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, said sub-inspector Alauddin, in-charge of the local police camp.
