UP member killing sparks protests in Gaibandha
Local people on Saturday blocked Gaibandha-Sundarganj road at Laxmipur Bazar in Sadar upazila demanding exemplary punishment of killer of newly-elected member of Laxmipur union parishad Abdur Rauf Master.
They took to the streets in the morning and staged demonstrations protesting the killing of Abdur Rauf .

They also placed logs on the road and set a tyre afire around 10 am, halting traffic movement for about four and a half hours.
Earlier, on Friday night, Abdur Rauf, a newly elected member of Laxmipur union parishad, was killed by a youth in Gobindapur village of Sadar upazila.
Police claimed to have arrested a man, identified as Rezaul, in connection with the murder.
Touhidul Islam, superintendent of Gaibandha Police, said “A compliant was lodged with Sadar Police on Saturday and the attacker might have killed him over previous enmity.”

Woman attempts suicide after killing son in Sirajganj
A mentally retarded woman tried to end her life after allegedly killing her five-year-old son in Chandidasgati village of Sadar upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Limon, son of Imrul Kayesh and Lipi Khatun.
Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said that Lipi suffocated her son to death when other family members were busy with household chores.

Later, he tried to kill herself by slitting her wrist with a blade. However, she was rescued by the family members and rushed to a local hospital.
"We have taken the body into our custody. A probe is also on," the OC said.

Gaibandha: UP member killed by youth
A newly elected member of Laxmipur union parishad was allegedly killed by a youth in Gobindapur village of Sadar upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rauf, an assistant teacher of Laxmipur High School, and member of ward number one of Laxmipur union.

Md Abdur Rauf, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said Abdur, along with his neighbour Ruhul Amin, was returning home on a motorbike around 11pm.
As they reached a broken bridge, they got off the bike and started to cross the structure on foot.
"Suddenly, Arif Mia, son of Haidar Ali, hit Rauf with an iron rod on his head, leaving him critically injured," the OC said.
Rauf was taken to a local hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Police claimed to have arrested a man, identified as Rezaul, in connection with the murder.

Father, son die as tractor rams into three-wheeler in Dinajpur
A man and his son were killed in Dinajpur's Nawabganj Friday after a sand-laden tractor-trolley rammed into an easy-bike, police said.
The incident, which occurred at 4:30pm in Gazipur union, left Kabirul Islam and his son Kawsar dead.
Kabirul’s wife Shahnaz Parveen and easy-bike driver Meherul Islam were critically injured, Nawabganj Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Ak Azad said.
The tractor hit the easy-bike on which Kabirul, from village Ballabhpur in Nawabganj, his son and wife were returning home after attending a family event, the SI added.
Kawsar died on the spot and Kabirul succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital, the SI said.
"The tractor was seized around 8.30pm. However, the driver and the tractor workers managed to escape."

UP poll violence: 8 looted EVMs looted in Patuakhali recovered
Eight electronic voting machines (EVMs) that were alleged to have been stolen from a polling centre in the Panpatti union in Patuakhali's Galachipa upazila on Thursday were recovered later from the garden, police said on Friday.
Supporters of the losing candidate looted the EVMs from Kazirkanda Government Primary School Polling Centre after the results were declared.
Shawkat Anwar Islam, OC of Galachipa Police Station, said police opened fired on the attackers to bring the situation under control.
Later, police recovered five EVMs on Thursday night and the remaining three on Friday morning from the garden of the polling centre.
Meanwhile, the acting executive magistrate of Panpatti Union Mohammad Suhrid Salehin said additional cops had to be deployed in the area on Thursday evening after the incident. However, the situation is now under control, he added.
Efforts are underway to arrest the miscreants who were involved in the crime, the OC added.

3 farm workers killed in Sirajganj road crash
Three farm workers were killed and another was injured when a truck crushed a motorbike they were riding on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway at Tarash upazila of Sirajganj, local police confirmed on Friday.
Witnesses said the accident occurred around 7pm Thursday when a gas cylinder-laden truck crushed the motorcycle with four riders at Mohishluti on their way to Hatikumrul.

The three _ Swapan Kumar, 25, Ashish Kumar, 28, and Palak, 30 _ all from Bridhamarich village of Bhangura upazila of Pabna district died on the spot. The injured has been admitted to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital in Sirajganj.
Lutfar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, confirmed the accident and said the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families.

A case has been filed in this regard, the OC added.

4 killed in Kurigram road accident
Four people, including three members of a family, were killed and another injured in a head-on collision between a Dhaka-bound bus and an auto-rickshaw in the Nageshwari area of Kurigram district on Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Jalil Sarker (auto driver), son of late Samuddi Sheikh, Shahidul Islam, his daughter Sumaiya, and his mother Sufia Begum of West Raiganj area of the upazila.

Shahidul Islam’s wife Shahnaj Begum was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.
Agitated local people blocked the road after the accident.
On information, officer-in-charge of Nageshwari police station, Nabiul Hasan and UNO Nur Ahmed Masum rushed to the spot and pacified the mob.
According to police and local sources, construction work is underway on the Kurigram-Bhurungamari highway.
The accident occurred when the night bus of Rizvi Paribahan hit the autorickshaw at 8 pm, leaving two people dead on the spot.

The two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
Officer-in-charge of Nageswari police station Nabiul Hasan said the bus driver was detained and the vehicle compounded.

Lalmonirhat: Two Bangladeshi cattle traders killed in BSF firing
Two Bangladeshi cattle traders were allegedly shot dead by India's Border Security Force (BSF) along the Burirhat border in Gorol union of Kaliganj upazila early on Friday.
The victims were identified as Asaduzzaman Bhasani, son of Altaf Hossain, and Moslem Uddin, son of Idris Ali of the union.
According to local chairman Mahmudul Islam, a patrol team of BSF opened fire at a group of cattle traders when they went to bring the livestock near pillar no 917 of Burirhat border, leaving two of them dead on the spot.

After the firing, BSF personnel took away the bodies of Asaduzzaman and Moslem Uddin, the chairman added.

Traffic comes to a standstill as rival supporters block Dhaka-Ctg highway
Traffic on the busy Dhaka-Chattogram highway came to a standstill for over half an hour Thursday morning after supporters of two rival union parishad (UP) member candidates blocked the high-speed corridor following a clash.
Summon Banik, inspector at Sitakunda police station, said the two groups clashed with each other in Sonaichhari union of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram around 5am, hours before voting began for the second phase of UP polls in Bangladesh.
The members of the two groups were supporters of rival UP member candidates, Mahbub and Forkan, respectively. "Both tried to occupy the Ghoramara Government Primary School polling station, leading to the clash," the OC said.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the two member candidates to the police station for questioning. Cops also seized bamboo sticks and 10 petrol bombs from outside the polling station.
Voting in nine unions of Sitakunda upazila, 12 unions in Fatikchhari upazila and 16 unions in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram is currently underway.

College teacher on poll duty dies in Kushtia
A college teacher roped in as a presiding officer for the union parishad (UP) election, died at a polling station in Kushtia on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Joynal Abedin, a teacher of Nimtala College of Mirpur upazila. He was assigned to the Ramnagar Titula polling station in Mirpur.

Joynal complained of breathing difficulty around 11pm and died within minutes, said returning officer of Kursha union Nurul Islam. "We suspect he died of cardiac arrest."
Voting in 11 union parishads in Mirpur upazila and six in Bheramara upazila is currently underway as the second phase of polls kicked off in Bangladesh on Thursday.
