Cumilla communal violence: Another case filed
Another case was filed on Tuesday over Cumilla communal violence triggered by alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Hindu temple.
The case was filed by Puja Rani, wife of Dilip Das (62) who died from injuries he suffered when troublemakers attacked Rajeshwari Kali Mandir in Manoharpur of the district on October 13.
Inspector Komol Krishna Dhor of Kotwali Police Station, where the case was filed, told UNB that 50-60 unidentified people were named in the case.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police(Cumilla) Khan Muhammad Rezwan said that the Criminal Investigation Department is keeping watch over several more people in another case filed over triggering communal violence by hurting religious sentiments.

“Soon, we will arrest several others over the incident,” he added.
Meanwhile, Cumilla police continued to quiz Iqbal Hossain, who reportedly placed the Holy Quran at a Puja mandap at Nauar Digir Par of Cumilla.
The SP said that though Iqbal confessed to his role in placing the Quran, he was yet to disclose the names of the masterminds.
He said three others, arrested in connection with the violence, are also being interrogated.
Earlier, the case filed over the Quran desecration in a puja mandap of Cumilla was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Police arrested Iqbal from Cox’s Bazar district on Thursday night after identifying him by scanning the footage of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
Three others were arrested from different parts of the country over the matter.
They are Faisal and Hafez Humayun, the two khadems of Darogabari shrine, and Ekram.A local court on Saturday put them on a seven-day remand in the case.

Housewife ‘gang-raped’ in Bhola’s Monpura: Police
Police said on Tuesday that they arrested a youth and were looking for four others after a housewife accused them of gang-raping her in Monpura under Bhola district.
In a case filed with Monpura police, the woman said she was assaulted by the youths on Sunday night at a garden near her house.
Police arrested the prime accused, Alauddin, at dawn on Tuesday. They are hunting down four others -- Md. Belal, Md Helal, Md Yusuf Dalal and Md Selim.

Locals told UNB quoting the woman she was at home with her two children as her husband went fishing in the sea.
When she opened her door after hearing several knocks and a ‘woman’s voice’, the attackers stormed into the room, tied her up and carried her to the adjacent garden where she was raped.
Neighbours rescued her around 1 am from the garden in a critical condition and took her to Bhola District Hospital.

Confirming the incident, Sayeed Ahmed, the officer-in-charge of Monpura Police said one accused has been arrested and efforts to nab the others are on.

Boat race in Modhumati marks Mujib Year, Golden Jubilee of Independence
A boat race was held on the Modhumoti river of Bagerhat Monday, marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and golden jubilee of Bangladesh independence.
People from all walks of life gathered on both sides of the river at Mollahat Upazila of the district to witness this traditional sporting event.
The day-long event was organised by local Awami League and was named after member of parliament of Bagerhat-1 constituency Sheikh Helal Uddin.
A total of seven boats of decorated with different colours participated in the competition and a team named ‘ Bhai bhai Jolpori Baicch dol’ led by Md Didarul Alam came out triumphant at the end of the day.
‘ Dui Bhai Jolpori Baicch dol’ captained by Md Iqbal Hossain became the runners-up of the event.
The first two teams were awarded a fridge and a television was awarded to all the seven participating teams.
Starting from Mollahat bridge, these boats covereed around 3 km during the race,
Members of the winning team ‘ Bhai bhai Jolpori Baich Dol’ told UNB that their team consists rowers from several upazilas of Bagerhat.
They said they participated in the event to ensure that this specific tradition of rural Bengal is sustained.

Faridpur man to die for killing wife in arson attack
A Faridpur court on Tuesday sentenced a man death for killing wife by setting her on fire in 2011.
Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Pradip Kumar Ray handed down the verdict.
The condemned convict is Shahabuddin Khan, of Dholairchar village in Alfadanga upazila.
The court also sentenced his brother Sumon Khan to life term imprisonment and acquitted two other accused in the case.
The convicts were fined Tk 50,000 each.
On June 27, 2011, Monira Khanam’s husband Shabuddin Khan, in-laws Sumon Khan, Asia Begum and Jhumur Begum set her fire after pouring kerosene to kill her, said Public Prosecutor of the tribunal advocate Shwapan Paul.
She was rescued by neighbors and rushed to a hospital and then succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said.
On July 3, 2011, Monira’s father filed a case at Alfadanaga police station.
On September 28, 2011, a charge sheet in the case was submitted to the court and after a long trial the court pronounced the verdict.

6 war crimes suspects held in Jashore
Police have arrested six people from Bagherpara upazila in Jashore for their suspected involvement in the crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The arrestees are Abul Hossain Biswas, Hossain Ali, Abu Bakkar, Lutfar Rahman, Khoibar Rahman and Nur Islam, of Bagherpara upazila.

Later, they were handed over to the International Crimes Tribunal, said Bagharpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Uddin said on Tuesday.
On Sunday, a team led by DB OC Rupon Sarkar and Bagharpara Police Station OC Firoz Uddin arrested the six war crimes suspects from different parts of the upazila.
On Saturday, Jashore district police received the arrest warrant.
A case was filed against the six in 2017. After an investigation, the tribunal issued an warrant for their arrest on October 21 this year.

Three of family found dead in Khulna pond
Police on Tuesday morning recovered three bodies of a family from a pond in Bamia village of Khulna's Koyra upazila.
The deceased were identified as daily wager Habibur Rahman, 30, his wife Beauty Khatun, 26, and their seventh grader daughter Habiba Khatun Tuni, 13. They were residents of Bamia village.

Police suspect the three were killed by miscreants in their home on Monday night and then their bodies were thrown into the nearby pond.
Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of the Koyra police station, said they had collected some evidence from the spot.
"Injury marks of sharp weapons were spotted on the three bodies. A probe is on," he added.

Mohib murder: Police seek 5-day in remand for 3 alleged killers
Police on Monday sought 5-day in remand for interrogating three arrested Rohingyas who allegedly were directly involved in killing Rohingya leader Mohib Ullah in Ukhia camp in Cox’s Bazar.
Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate court has received the appeal for remand and accepted it for hearing.
The three arrestees for whom remand was sought are, Md Rashid Prakash Murshid Amin, from block-D8 of Kutupalong camp-1, Mohammad Anas and Nur Mohammad from block-B of the same camp.
So far nine Rohingya men have been arrested in this case.

Of them two have already gave confessional statements of involvement in the murder before court.
A senior officer of district police said on Saturday Armed Police Battalion arrested Azizul Haque, Md Rashid, Anas, Nur Mohammad from a Rohingya camp who were part of the killing squad.
Aziz already gave his confessional statement to Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate court on Saturday afternoon and police had sought remand for the three others, he said.
Earlier, five more Rohingyas- Md Elias, Mohammad Selim,33, Abdus Salam,32, and Jiaur Rahman,32, andS hawkat Ullah,23, were arrested for being involved in this murder.
Of them Elias confessed to his involvement on October 10 to the court.

Commander of APBn-14 SP Naimul Haque said, in primary interrogation Aziz spoke of a total of 19 Rohingya miscreants being involved in the murder plan and of them five were killing squad members including him.
Following the information extracted from Aziz APBn has arrested the three others, said SP Naimul.
On September 29, Murshid called Mohib to the ARSPH office to discuss Rohingya repatriation and informed other members of the squad, said SP Naimul quoting Azizul.
They fired four shots at Mohib Ullah, he said adding that they fled the scene by a lane behind Mohib Ullah’s house.
Unknown assailants gunned down Mohib on September 29.
On August 25, 2019, Mohib Ullah came into the limelight as a leader after holding an assembly of around five lakh Rohingyas.

4 Joypurhat Jamaat leaders held for allegedly planning vandalism
Police arrested four Jamaat-e-Islami leaders including Joypurhat district Ameer (chief) and secretary of the organization on Monday from Kalai upazila.
The detainees were identified as district Jamaat Ameer Dr Fazlur Rahman Sayeed, 58, Secretary Golam kibria,53, Kalai upazila Jamaat Ameer Munsur Rahman,49, and former Ameer Nuruzzaman Sarkar,63.
Officer-in-charge of Kalai police station 0Selim Malik said, tipped off that some Jamaat members will hold a secret meeting at the ground floor of Abdus Samad Talukdar Market in Kalai upazila they conducted a raid and nabbed those four leaders.

The leaders had gathered for planning a vandalism attack, said the OC.
Case filing is under process against the Jamaat men under the Special Powers Act, he said.
However, each of them has multiple cases of vandalism against their names, said OC Selim.

Five workers burnt in Narayanganj steel mill explosion
Five workers sustained burn injuries in an explosion at a steel factory in Rasulpur area of Fatullah upazila on Monday.
The injured were identified as Sohel Rana, 36, Liton,35, Arif,27, Billal Hossain,35, and Mohammad Ali,26.
Mohammad Ali’s condition is critical, doctors said.
Chemist of the factory Md Ashik rescued the workers and took them to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Md Ashik said the explosion occurred around 11:30 am apparently in the water supply pipeline of the factory.
The hospital authority said the injured got 50 per cent to 11 per cent of their body burnt.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp in-charge Bacchu Mia said the five injured who were admitted to the hospital are workers of CHRM steel mill in Fatullah.

Communal violence: Missing Hanuman’s mace recovered in Cumilla
The ‘Gada’ (Mace) of Hindu God Hanuman which went missing from a Cumilla temple has been recovered from a pond near the Darogabari Mazar mosque in the district.
Iqbal Hossain, the man arrested for placing the Holy Quran at a Hindu temple, reportedly threw the mace into the pond on the night of the incident.

Inspector Parimal Das of the Detective Branch said it was recovered around 11 pm Sunday.
“After Iqbal confessed that he had dropped the Hindu God’s weapon in a pond, police took him to the pond and a diving team recovered the mace ,” he added.
Besides, the case filed over the Quran desecration in a puja mandap of Cumilla, has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police M Tanvir Ahmed said the case was handed over to CID following an instruction from the Police Headquarters.
