Youth stabbed dead in Rajshahi
A young man was stabbed to death allegedly by his rival in Beldarpara Muktijoddha Sangsad area of the city on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Sohel Rana, son of Abdul Karim of Shiroil Colony area of the city. He was an employee of Rajshahi Railways department.

Witnesses said a quarrel broke out between Sohel and Faruq over buying liquor at the house of drug trader Togor. Following the quarrel, Faruq stabbed Sohel with sharp weapons, leaving him seriously injured.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Faruq also sustained injuries but it was not clear how he got hurt during the incident, Mazharul Islam, officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalia Police Station.
"We are investigating the incident,” the officer added.

Kurigram: BSF hands over bodies of two minor siblings
India's Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday handed over to the Bangladesh authorities the bodies of two minor siblings, who went missing on Friday in the border area of Kurigram’s Phulbari upazila.
The deceased were identified as Parveen Khatun, 8, and Shakibul Hasan, 4. They were the children of Rahim Uddin of Poschim Shukati village in Nageshwari upazila.

The bodies were handed over around 8pm on Tuesday after Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) held a flag meeting with their Indian counterparts at Dharmapur border in Kashipur union.
On Friday, the two siblings went missing while crossing the Nilkumor river, after the BSF chased them as they were in a group trying to cross the border at Phulbari in Kurigram to sneak into Bangladesh illegally.
On Saturday morning, the BSF recovered the bodies and kept them in a morgue.

Cattle traders robbed of Tk 30 lakh in Meghna
A group of cattle traders returning home by a ferry after selling their cattle and goats was robbed of Tk 30 lakh by armed men in the Meghna river off the coast of Barishal on Tuesday.
Faruk Hossain, sub-inspector of Kaliganj River Police, said Aziz Shikdar, a cattle trader, along with 10-15 others, hired the vessel to go to Laxmipur Mollarhat from Char Ekokria for selling 28 cattle and 50 goats ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

While they were returning home after selling all the goats and 18 cattle, armed robbers got into the ferry in the Lalboya area around 6pm, thrashed them and decamped with the cash, the officer said.

Mother-daughter duo killed in Dinajpur road accident
A woman and her 12-year-old daughter riding pillion on her husband's bike were killed after being hit by a speeding truck near M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Beauty Begum, 35, and her daughter Fahima, all residents of Pashtikari village in Bholahat upazila of Chapainawabganj.

The accident occurred when the speeding truck crashed into the bike around 5am while they were on their way home for Eid, leaving the duo dead on the spot, said Asaduzzama, inspector (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station.
Beauty’s husband Mohammad Hossain and their minor son also sustained severe injuries in the accident. "They are being treated at M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital," he said.
"Efforts are on to nab the truck driver who sped away after the accident," the inspector said.

Three bodies fished out of Barishal river
More than 24 hours after three people were washed away while crossing a river in the Char Gazalia area of Bakerganj upazila, their bodies were found.
The deceased were identified as Majeda Begum, 70, her granddaughter Maria, 11, and their neighbour Alo Begum, 75, all residents of the Char Gazalia area of Nalua union of Bakerganj upazila.
Md Alauddin Milon, officer-in-charge of Bakerganj Police Station, said Majeda Begum and her granddaughter Maria left home on Monday evening to bring back a cow from a char next to their house. Alo Begum also went with them.

All of them were washed away by the high tide when they were crossing the local river on Monday evening, said the OC.
Later, locals spotted the bodies floating in the river near the Char Gazalia area in the small hours of Tuesday and informed cops. "We have recovered the bodies," he added.

Fire at Gazipur jhut godown
A fire broke out at a jhut (scrap from garment factories) godown in Konabari’s Dewliabari area of Gazipur city on Tuesday night.
Factory sources said the fire originated at around 9pm. Locals at first tried to douse the fire.
On information, three firefighting units from Joydebpur and Kashimpur DBL rushed to the spot and are trying to douse the fire till filing of this report at 10:45pm.

Tasharaf Hossain, senior station officer of Joydebpur Fire Service said, the fire originated at a jhut warehouse at first and later spread to more godowns.
He could not tell the reason behind the fire.
Casualties and losses due to the fire could not be known immediately.

Mild heat wave sweeping Kurigram
A mild heatwave is sweeping through the district of Kurigram.
The heatwave spell may continue for two or three days, said Sabur Hossain, in-charge of Kurigram Razarhat Weather Observatory Office.
The mercury reached 35.7 degrees Celsius in the district, he said.
Besides, the normal life of the people has been disrupted due to the frequent power cuts amid the scorching heat.
Nurul Mia, a resident of Pachgachi union in Sadar upazila, said “We are suffering a lot as I could not recharge my auto-rickshaw. How would I run the vehicle without charging and what will I get?”

Nur Nabi, a cybercafé owner, said he is facing problems operating his business due to load shedding. Power supply was disrupted for two hours a day due to load shedding.
The daily wage earners, children and old persons are the worst sufferers of heat waves.
Abu Mia, a fruit trader in Kurigram municipality area, said the scorching heat has been paralysing the life of people and the load shedding added more suffering for people.
Maidul Islam, a handcraft trader, said “My 100 pieces of hand fan were sold today which is highest selling in this year.”
He also hopes that we will be able to sell more than 50 hand fans.

Sylhet records highest rainfall in June in 62 years
Sylhet district recorded the highest rainfall in June in 62 years, said officials of Sylhet Weather Observatory Office.
The district recorded 2456.02 mm of rainfall last month, the highest rainfall recorded after 1956, it said.
The average rainfall in June in the district is 818.4 mm but it experienced 2456.02 mm rains which is 77.78% higher than average, it said.
Syed Ahmed Chowdhury, Senior Meteorologist of Sylhet Weather Observatory office, said “In June Sylhet district experienced an unnatural rainfall. Showers are seen 22 days of the month on average but it rained 28 days this June. 303.6 mm of rainfall was recorded in a single day on June 18.”

In 2004, 1394 mm of rainfall was recorded in June in Sylhet, he said.
Flood situation in Sylhet
The overall flood situation in Sylhet continued to improve with the fall of waters in all major rivers.
At 6pm on Monday, the Surma was flowing 34 cm above the danger level after its water level dropped 8 cm in 24 hours, according to the district Water Development Board (WDB).
Though the water level of the Kushiara river increased a little bit at Amalshid point.
However, flood survivors across the northeastern district continue to suffer from the deluge. While many have taken refuge in makeshift shelters, others are staying in tents on the highway and roads.
According to the local administration, 29,99,433 members of 4,84,383 families have been affected by the flood while 40,000 dwelling houses were destroyed.
SM Shahidul Islam, the river water in most of the point has started to recede but in a slow process.

Government allocation
The government has provided Tk 2.57 crore till July 3 for the flood-hit people in Sylhet. Besides, 1,612 metric tonnes of rice were also disbursed among the flood- affected people, said Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Mujibur Rahman.
Besides, the government also provided Tk 10 lakh for baby food and fodder each and 20,218 packets of dry food.
A letter was also sent to the authorities concerned seeking Tk 50 lakh cash, Tk 20 lakh for baby food and animal feed to tackle the post-flood situation, said Mujibur.

Bodies of two missing children found on Cox’s Bazar beach
The bodies of two minor children who went missing from Cox's Bazar sea beach Monday afternoon were recovered in the small hours of Tuesday.
Beach workers spotted the bodies floating on the sea water near Diabetic and Nazirartek points of the beach and recovered those around 1:00 am on Tuesday, said Beach supervisor Mahbub Alam.

The deceased were identified as Md Zayed,5, son of Mufiz Alam of Kutubdiapara in Cox's Bazar and Riyadh,6, son of Mohammad Ali.
Akter Kamal, councillor of Cox's Bazar municipality's ward no 1, said the two children were washed away by high tide when they went to visit the sea beach around 3 on Monday.
Since then, they remained missing, added Kamal.

Quack held in Khulna
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has claimed to have detained a quack from Koyra upazila of Khulna.
Posing as a medical doctor, the accused, Mubarak Hossain, had been treating patients in the Orjunpur area of the upazila, according to a Rab release.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-6 conducted a drive in the area around 6pm on Monday and detained Mubarak.

The elite force also seized prescriptions, fake seals and pads from his possession.
Earlier, he was convicted for practicing without a medical degree by a mobile court in Barishal, the release added.
