Man gets death penalty for raping and killing schoolgirl in Tangail
A Tangail court on Monday sentenced a man to death in a case filed over killing a schoolgirl after raping her in 2020.
Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Khaleda Yasmin passed the order in presence of the convict.
The death row convict is Mazedur Rahman,26, son of Anwar Hossain from Moddhopara village in Tangail sadar upazila.

On September 9, 2020, a fourth grader student of a local school went missing as she went to collect sugarcane from a field beside her home in the afternoon. Later in the evening her body was recovered from a bush near her house, said Public prosecutor advocate Ali Ahmed.
Next day, Mazedur was arrested from his home after a case was filed at Tangail sadar police station in this regard followed by a complaint lodged by the victim's brother.
In primary interrogation Mazedur confessed to strangulate the girl to death with her scarf after raping her. He also gave a confessional statement before court.

Hadisur to be buried in Barguna after janaza on Tuesday morning
Md Hadisur Rahman, who was killed on March 3 in a rocket attack on a Bangladeshi vessel stranded at a Ukrainian port, will be buried at his family graveyard in Kalatala village in Betagi upazila of Barguna on Tuesday.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held at 10 am Tuesday, said Maksudur Rahman Forkan, Betagi UP chairman and Hadisur’s uncle.
The freezer van carrying Hadisur's body reached his home at Kadamtala village of Barguna’s Betagi upazila at around 10 pm on Monday.
Hadisur was the third engineer of the vessel MV Banglar Samriddhi.
“My brother’s body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport carried by a Turkish Airlines flight Airport around 12.30 pm and after all the formalities we left for our village home around 2 pm,” said Golam Mowla Prince, Hadisur’s younger brother.

Benapole: Covid-negative certificates not needed for vaccinated India returnees
The passengers returning from India who received two doses of government approved Covid-19 vaccines or one dose of Johnson and Johnson vaccine will not need to provide covid-negative certificates while entering Bangladesh.
Raju Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Benapole immigration check post said the new rule has become effective from Monday.

Dr Yusub Ali, in-charge of Sharsha upazila health complex said, “We received a letter in this regard from the authority on Sunday.”
“The mandate of the RT-PCR test conducted before 72 hours of entering the Bangladesh border will not be applicable for those who received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. But it will remain applicable for others” said OC Raju Ahmed.

According to the health division of the immigration the passengers headed for India receiving a third Covid-19 jab or booster dose will not need to provide negative certificates.
But it will be mandatory to stay in isolation and get tested for those who have symptoms of the virus.

Youth dies after ‘drinking excessive liquor’ in Natore
A 25-year-old youth has died allegedly after drinking excessive liquor in Harishpur area of Natore town.
The deceased was identified as Sobuj, son of Jahangir Alam of the town.
Anwar Hossain, counselor of a private drug rehabilitation center in the area, said drunk Sabuj was brought to the rehab center by his friends around 9pm on Sunday.

He advised them to take Sobuj to Natore Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Monsur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Natore Police Station, said Sobuj might have died from excessive alcohol consumption.
“The cause of the death will be known once we get the autopsy report,” said the OC.

Deer that crossed over from India dies after locals give chase
A deer that crossed the Indian border and entered Bangladesh on Sunday died after being chased by locals in Siktihari village in Atwari upazila of Panchagarh.
The Forest Department and Upazila Livestock office confirmed the unfortunate deer died of excessive bleeding from its wounded leg while running for its life from the villagers.

“The deer entered Bangladesh in search of food from the Indian side of the border. Informed by some locals, we rescued it in a critical condition," said Mushfiqul Alam Halim, Atwari Upazila Nirbahi Officer.
“The deer died before our eyes and later we buried it after an autopsy,” said Rishikesh Ray, Panchagarh range officer of the Forest Division.

Napa syrup deaths in B’baria: DGDA sends samples for testing
A six-member committee formed by the Director General of Drug Administration (DGDA) on Sunday started investigating the incidents of two children’s death after taking Napa syrup in Brahmanbaria. “The sample of the syrup has been sent to a Dhaka lab for testing. Also samples of the syrups of the same batch have been collected and sent for testing “, said Dr Akib Hossain, head of the probe committee and director of DGDA.

The committee recorded testimonies of the children’s mother Lima Begum, uncle Ujjal Mia, grandmother Lilufa Begum. Dr Akib said, the family members of those children said they fell sick immediately after consuming the syrup. “The reaction started within 10 to 15 minutes of taking the syrup. It may take time to identify the suspicious element in the syrup, “ said the DGDA director. Other members of the committee-two deputy directors, two assistant directors and an inspector of DGDA accompanied Dr Akib during the investigation. On Thursday night, two siblings named Yasin Khan,7, and Morsalin Khan,5, son of Ismail Khan, a brick kiln worker, died after given Napa syrup at their home for high fever. It was bought from a local ‘Ma Pharmacy’ owned by Main Uddin and the syrup had an expiry date mentioned till 2023.

Probe committee formed over torching 12 buses in Faridpur
A three-member committee has been formed to probe into the incident of setting 12 buses on fire in Goalchamte of Faridpur.
The committee has been asked to submit the report within five working days, said Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Atul Sarkar on Sunday.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Investigation) Md Imdad Hossain has been made the head of the committee. The other two members of the committee are Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sumon Ranjan Sarkar and Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Helaluddin.
A case was also filed in this regard.

ASP Sumon Ranjan Sarkar said a security guard looking after of the seized buses, was being questioned.
Steps are on to arrest the culprits after identifying them, he added.
Earlier on Saturday, at least 12 buses of ‘South Line’ Paribahan were set on fire by unidentified miscreants at the terminal in Goalchamte of Faridpur district town around 1.30am.
Some 22 buses were parked at the terminal.
All the buses -- owned by former Awami League leader Sajjad Hossain Barkat and his brother Imtiaz Hossain Rubel, had been kept at the terminal since their seizure by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in June 2020.
On information, fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was eventually extinguished.
Suraiya Parveen, wife of Barkat, said that a local court on February 25, 2020, ordered the seizure of 55 vehicles, owned by Barkat-Rubel.

On March 3 last year, the CID filed a charge sheet against 10 people, including Barkat and Rubel, in a Tk 2,000-crore money laundering case.
CID's assistant superintendent Uttam Kumar Biswas submitted the charge sheet in the Dhaka metropolitan magistrate's court.

Youth’s body recovered in Benapole
Police recovered the hanging body of a man from an under-construction building at Chhota Aanchara village in Jashore’s Benapole on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Hannan Mridha, 36, son of Abul Hossain Mridha of Bishnudi village in Chandpur.
Benapole Port Police Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain Bhuiyan said informed by locals, police recovered the body.
The body was later sent to Jashore General Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.

Couple killed in Nilphamari road accident
A couple was killed in a road crash at Kazirhat in Nilphamari Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased were Swapan Roy, 30, and his wife Sumi Roy, 25, both workers of Sonic Company at Uttara Export Processing Zone.
Witnesses said they were going to Uttara EPZ on the motorcycle of another person to join the work.

As the motorcyclist lost control while overtaking a truck the couple was crushed under its wheels.
Fortunately, Satish Chandra, the motorcyclist, survived.
Nilphamari Police OC Mahmud-Un-Nabi said that the bodies were recovered and sent to the Nilphamari Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The truck was seized, he said.

Twin sisters drown in Goalanda pond
Twin sisters drowned while taking bath in a pond at Goalanda Upazila Parishad premises in Rajbari district on Saturday.
Swapan Kumar Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Goalanda Police Station, said the 12-year old girls -Tapur and Tupur, daughter of Abdul Goni, had been living with their maternal grandmother since their parents got divorced.
Both the girls were students of class III of Moonstar Collegiate School in Goalanda upazila.
Anna Begum, grandmother of the two girls , used to work as a domestic help in a number of houses.

On Saturday afternoon, Tapur and Tupur went to the pond at Upazila Parishad Premises for taking bath and drowned there.
As the girls were not returning home after a long period of time, Anna Begum went to the pond and found them floating in the pond.
Later, they were taken to a local hospital where doctors declared them dead.
