25-yr-old fisherman dies in clash in Bhola
A 25-year-old fisherman was killed and five others were injured in a clash between two groups of fishermen over netting fish in the Meghna river in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Asgar Ali, son of Khorshed of the upazila.

Maksudur Rahman Murad, officer-in-charge of Lalmohan Police Station, said a group of fishermen, led by Matin Majhi, went to the eastern side of the Meghna river under Dhaligournagar union for netting fish.
Minutes later, the other group of fishermen, led by Nayan Majhi, appeared in the same area for catching fish, triggering an altercation in the afternoon.

Later, both the groups attacked each other, leaving at least six people injured.
The injured were taken to Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex, where Asgar died of his injuries. "Efforts are on to nab the attackers,” said the OC.

Miscreants fell 52 mango trees of a Madrasha in Magura
Miscreants have chopped 52 mango trees at the premises of Baliadanga Hafezia and Orphanage Madrasha at Baliadanga village in Sadar upazila of the district, the head of the institution said on Tuesday.
Firoz Ahmed, super of Baliadanga Hafezia and Madrasha, said he noticed the trees, some of them in flowers, felled to the ground as he, along with Madrasha students, came out of a mosque after saying fazr prayer.
The miscreants felled the trees sometime after midnight under the cover of darkness when staff and students of the madrasha were asleep, he said.

He demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in the tree felling.
Manjurul Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, said “We have got a written complaint about tree felling and legal steps will be taken after investigation.”

Woman’s body recovered from river in Chuadanga
Police have recovered the decomposed body of a woman from Mathabhanga river in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Poppy Khatun, 26, wife of Tuhin of Nagarboalia village in Bhangbaria union of Alamdanga upazila and daughter of Bhola Sheikh of Islampara in Belgachi village of the same upazila.
The body was recovered from Mathabhanga river at Karigarpara in Bhangbaria village of the upazila on Monday (January 24) afternoon.
According to police, some women from the area found the body when they went down to bathe in the Mathabhanga river on Monday afternoon and informed the police.
Deceased’s father Bhola Sheikh said six days ago, her in-laws, including her husband Tuhin informed him that Poppy had escaped with a man.
But he suspects that her husband has killed Poppy as she was often beaten and tortured there.
Alamdanga police inspector Tuhinuzzaman Khan said police had recovered the body six days after she went missing. Initially, it was thought that she had been murdered.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he said.

Teenage girl found dead at police station in Rangpur
A 19-year-old girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the Victim Support Centre of Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur city on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ruhi, daughter of Sekendar Ali of Harinakunda upazila in Jhenaidah district.
Quoting local people, police said Ruhi developed a love affair with one Akash of Ram Gobindamore area of Rangpur city. Following their relationship, Ruhi came to the city to meet Akash on January 22.

After reaching a designated place Ruhi failed to see Akash and she also found his phone switched off.

Local people found Ruhi in the area alone late in the night and made a phone call to emergency service 999 around 3:30 am on Sunday and informed police.
Responding to the call, a team of police took her to the Victim Support Centre of Kotwali Police Station where she ‘killed herself by hanging from the ceiling fan’.
Mohammad Sazzad Hossain, deputy police commissioner of Metropolitan Police (DB media) said “Ruhi killed self by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.”
The body of Ruhi was taken to local hospital morgue for autopsy. The body will be handed over to Ruhi’s family after completing legal process, he said.

3 deer poachers held in Khulna
Forest Department officials detained three poachers along with deer traps, boat and other on Monday morning at Markirkhal area in Koyra upazila of Khulna district.
The detainees are Mizanur Rahman, 45, Moidul Sarder, 42 and Rahim Gazi 35, residents of Fakirabad Village in Paikgachha Upazila of the district.

The detainees were produced before the court of Koyra Upazila Senior Judicial Magistrate.
A case was filed in this connection.

3 dead as train hits three-wheeler in Chapainawabganj
Three people were killed when a train hit a three-wheeler at a level crossing at Alinagar Hazirmor in Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj district on Monday morning.
The deceased are Fulchan, son of late Garibulla, Sheher Ali, son of late Rais Uddin, and Naimul, son of Manik Chand of Chapainawabganj district.

Chapainawabganj railway station master Shahidul Alam said the Ishwardi-bound train crashed into the three-wheeler while passing the unguarded level crossing in Alinagar Hajirmor area, half kilometer off the station, around 8am, leaving three passengers of the three-wheeler dead on spot.
On information, police and fire service members recovered the body from the spot, the station master said.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner of the district AKM Galib Khan provided financial assistance of Tk 25,000 each to the families of the victims.

AKM Galib Khan said the train accident occurred at Hajirmor which is an unauthorised level crossing.
"I reported the incident to the Divisional Commissioner. A rail gate will be built here soon," he added.

4 killed in Rangpur road crash
Four people were killed and another injured when a speeding bus hit an auto-rickshaw on Kurigram road at Nabdiganj in Rangpur city on Sunday.
Two of the deceased were- Pabitra Nandi of Khulna’s Paikgacha and Anil Chadra, 55, a resident of Rangpur city. However, identities of two others were not immediately known.

Witnesses said the accident occurred around 7:30pm when a Rangpur-bound ‘Manik Express bus hit an auto-rickshaw on Kurigram road, leaving two passengers of the auto-rickshaw and its driver dead on spot and two others injured.
On information, fire service took them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries, said Farid Ahmed Chowdhury, assistant director of Rangpur Fire Service.

Domestic help found dead at university teacher’s house in Lalmonirhat
Police on Sunday recovered the body of a domestic help from the house of a Scotland-expatriate university teacher at Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat.
The deceased was identified as Sahinur Begum, of Madhupur of Tangail district.

Police said the woman had been working as a domestic help at Professor Mozammel Haque's house in Kakina.
He lives in Scotland, where he has been teaching at a university for 20 years.
On Sunday morning, the other housemaids broke the window after getting no response and found her body lying on the ground.

On information, Police recovered the body in the noon and sent it to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Golam Rasul, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station.

Rajshahi students protest postponement of NU exams
Students from different colleges under National University (NU) on Sunday formed a human chain at Shaheb Bazar Zero Point in the city protesting the suspension of all exams under the NU. The students also squatted on the streets with pen and papers in symbolic appearance in the examinations.

Abdur Rahim, one of the protesters, said “We have three or two examinations remaining and we want to complete the tests maintaining health guidelines. We are getting stuck due to postponement of the examinations and many of us can’t enter job for failing to get any certificate.” On January 21, all examinations of National University were suspended indefinitely in view of the surging Covid-19 pandemic. This was announced in a press release issued by the university authority on Friday. The schedule of these exams will be informed when the situation gets normal, said the release.

Covid-19 infections rise to 50 % in Bagerhat
The Covid-19 infection rate in this south-western coastal district jumped to 50 per cent as per samples tested in the past 24 hours till Sunday, officials said.
Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Habibur Rahman, said that 20 people tested positive for the virus from samples taken from 40 people during this period.
With this some 7,125 people have tested positive for Covid-19 while 144 people died of Covid till Sunday in the district. A total of 6,935 people recovered from the virus, he said.

He said 63.19% people of the district have received the first dose of the Covid jabs, while 41.88% got second dose and 1.18% received booster or the third dose.
Besides, one lakh 53 thousand 361 students aged between 12 and 17 have been given the first shot and 46 thousand 437 the second shot, according to health officials.
Despite a surge in the virus people seemed indifferent to maintaining Covid safety masures like wearing masks in public places.

In the city’s crowded areas of Sadhonar intersection, Main Road, Kitchen Market, fish market and other important places, people were seen moving without wearing masks.
