Off-duty constable’s hanging body recovered from Magura playground
A police constable’s hanging body was recovered Friday from Balurmath playground at Stadium Para area in Magura.
The deceased was identified as Md Tuhin, 23, a police constable of Chowgacha police station in Jashore.
The body was hanging from the horizontal bar of a goalpost at the ground. The knot was coloured plastic wiring.
Magura police station officer-in-charge Monzurul Alam said the devotees of a nearby mosque noticed the body around 6am and informed the police.
Brother of the deceased, Tushar, said that Tuhin had been living in Magura with his family on furlough since the pandemic started. He seemed a bit indifferent over the last few days, he added.
The body has been kept at the police station and was being prepared for an autopsy, OC Monzurul said.

15 hurt as violence vitiates Pabna's pre-poll environment
As many as 15 people were injured, five of them with bullet wounds, when supporters of two rival candidates for the upcoming Hatkhali Union Parishad election allegedly clashed in Barbhagia village of Pabna Thursday night.
Police, however, claimed on Friday that it was actually a clash between two families in the village under Sujanagar upazila over an unapproved love affair.
Those who sustained bullet injuries have been identified as Azhar Ali Molla, 65, Azgar Ali Molla, 60, Khairul Islam, 40, Rehena Khatun, 35, and Jubayer Hossain. Four of them have been shifted to Pabna General Hospital from the upazila health complex.

Firoz Ahmed Khan, the organisational secretary of the upazila Krishak League, an associate outfit of the Awami League, told UNB that the members of the ruling party had been attacking rival candidates for the UP election since October 26, the last day of withdrawing nominations.
Firoz is contesting the UP election for the chairman's post as an independent, while Abdur Rauf is the ruling party candidate.
"Around 8.30pm on Thursday, a gang of miscreants owing allegiance to Abdur, went on a vandalism spree in Barbhagia village, attacking residents and damaging houses as well as the election office in Nuruddin Bazar. Some of the miscreants fired at my supporters," Firoz claimed.

Abdur, however, refuted the allegations, claiming it was a clash between the Bishwash and Molla community in the village over a love affair. "Firoz is trying to exploit the situation,” he said.
Officer-in-charge of Sujanagar police station Mizanur Rahman also said it was not a UP poll-related violence, "but rather a love affair related clash between two groups owing allegiance to Firoz".
“Currently the situation is under control. A heavy police force has been deployed in the village," he said. "We will initiate legal action, post-filing of a complaint."

Conjoined twins die hours after birth in Jashore
A baby boy with two heads died hours after being born at a private hospital in Jashore on Thursday.
The baby -- actually conjoined twin brothers who shared a single body, two arms and two legs -- was delivered by Caesarean on Thursday afternoon.
Both the mother, Muslima Akter, a resident of Natopara village in Jhenaidah upazila, and the baby were later shifted to Jashore General Hospital. However, the baby passed away within a couple of hours.

Faisal Ahmed a doctor at the children's ward of Jashore General Hospital, said the baby was brought to the district's premier medical facility around 7pm on Thursday.
“As his condition deteriorated further, we referred him to a Dhaka hospital. But the baby breathed his last around 9pm before he could be shifted to the capital," he said.
The baby’s grandmother, Sabina Begum, said that in the ninth month of Muslima's pregnancy, doctors at the private hospital told them that she was expecting twins after seeing her ultrasonography report.

Violence, vandalism mar run up to Netrokona UP polls; 25 injured
At least 25 people were injured in clashes between the supporters of rival candidates ahead of the union parishad (UP) polls in Netrokona.
The incidents took place Wednesday and Thursday in Dakshin Bishiura, Lokkhiganj unions of Netrokona Sadar upazila and Singdha and Raipur unions of Barhatta upazila, according to police.
Complaints and counter-complaints were lodged at Netrokona Model Police Station in this connection. The law enforcers visited the spots Thursday.

According to local sources, Mohammad Abu Bakar Siddique, Awami League candidate for the Dokkhin Bishiura union parishad election and also ruling party president of the area, got his party's "boat" symbol. Rebel candidate Abul Kalam, the former chairman of the union, got the "motorcycle" symbol.
After receiving the symbols, the supporters of the two candidates started electioneering. As they came across each other at the Dokkhin Bishiura Bazaar, a fight broke out between them, resulting in the injury of 15 people.
At that time, chairs, tables, furniture, photo frames with pictures of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were shattered and posters of ruling party candidates were torn down.
Md Bachchu Mia, a supporter of Abu Bakar, said, "Supporters of rebel candidate [Kalam] carried out the attack and vandalised the office furniture and damaged photos of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. "

However, Kalam said: "None of my supporters did that. Supporters of the Awami League candidate planned the incident themselves. The people of the area are well aware of this."
On the same day, SM Shafiqul Quader Suja, district BNP leader and current chairman, received the "eyeglass" symbol, for the Lokkhiganj union parishad election at 8:30pm. When his supporters went out to persuade people to vote for him in the election, Awami League candidate Azharul Haque Tuhin's men attacked them at the union's Sultangati Bazaar, leaving five injured.
During electioneering of Atiqur Rahman Raju, Awami League's rebel candidate from Barhatta's Raipur union and incumbent chairman, Thursday morning, supporters of Ali Akbar Talukder, the candidate for "boat" symbol, vandalised their rival's autorickshaws and mics.
The residence of BNP electoral candidate Sujan Chowdhury was vandalised and looted Wednesday night in Snigdha of Barhatta. The attackers took away Tk3.70 lakh and injured five people.
The BNP leader claimed that the Awami League candidate's men attacked his house.
Akbar Ali Munsi, Netrokona's superintendent of police, said: "There have been some isolated incidents [of violence and vandalism] in different parts of the district ahead of the polls. Police already visited the spots. Action will be taken upon completion of investigations into the incidents."
Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mohammad Abdur Rahman said, "We are holding talks with the electoral candidates to prevent violence during and in the aftermath of the elections. However, some unwanted incidents already occurred."

75-year-old ailing mother files case against children under Parents Care Act
An ailing mother abandoned in her old age has filed a case against two of her own children in Barishal under the rarely invoked Parents Care Act, 2013. Jahanur Begum, 75, was even too sick to go to the court of Barishal Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Billah to file the case, and so the formalities were completed at her residence in Jorapukur area of the city at 4:30 pm. Jahanur filed the case against her son Mostafizur Rahman and daughter Sabina Akter for not taking responsibility for her treatment or maintenance. According to the case complaint, Jahanur wanted to sell some of her husband’s property in Khulna as she needed money for her medical treatment.

On October 22, the accused children came to Barishal and said they won’t let her sell the property. At the same time they also flatly refused to give her any money for maintenance and misbehaved with her. After that they didn’t communicate with her anymore. On November 14, 2014, Jahanur’s husband passed away and since then she had been suffering from many medical conditions.
She recently had a brain stroke, and suffers from an immobile spine, sore back and partial paralysis, said Jahanur. She prayed for an arrest warrant to be issued against the accused, and payment of maintenance for her. Probation officer of Barishal Social Welfare Division Sazzad Hossain said Jahanur Begum sent a complaint application under section five of the Parents Care Act through her lawyer to court against her two children.

As the judge couldn’t testify to the plaintiff’s statement, Judge Masum Billah went to Jahanur Begum’s house after the court was adjourned.The judge recorded Jahanur’s statement in the presence of Sazzad Hossain and plaintiff’s lawyer.
Finding primary evidence of her statement being true, the court recorded the case and summoned the accused and also ordered them to appear before court by November 1. Currently Jahanur Begum is staying with her younger daughter Shahida.

AL leader stabbed dead in Noakhali
A local leader of Awami League leader was stabbed to death in Begumganj upazila in Noakhali district in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Abu Sayed Bhuiyan Ripon, 48, joint general secretary of Mir Warishpur union in the upazila and a resident of Talua Chandpur village.
Imran Hossain, son of the deceased, said Ripon used to work as Begumganj intersection counter manager of Lal Shobuj Paribahan bus service on Noakhali-Dhaka route.

On Thursday, some miscreants attacked Ripon when he was returning from the counter like every day on his motorbike with Tk 2.5 lakh around 3 am .
They snatched the money and cut his veins with sharp weapons before leaving the place, he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Begumganj Model police station Mir Zahedul Haque Rony said the body was recovered and sent to a hospital for an autopsy.

60,000 Yaba pills seized in Cox's Bazar
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday seized 60,000 Yaba pills during a drive at Palangkhali UP No. 5 in Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar district.
Tipped-off, a team of BGB Battalion-34 of Cox’s Bazar conducted a drive in the area in the early hours of Thursday while some Yaba traders were entering Bangladesh from Myanmar, said a press release.

When the BGB men challenged the Yaba traders, they fled the scene abandoning a bag containing the contraband pills on the spot.
Later, the BGB men recovered 60,000 Yaba pills worth TK 1.80 crore from the bag.

Train hits truck stranded on tracks in Pabna
An inter-city train bound for Rajshahi hit a truck stranded on the railway tracks at the Mahendrapur level crossing in Pabna Sadar upazila in the early hours of Thursday, officials said.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The accident occurred around 5am within minutes of the iron rods-laden truck getting stranded on the Pabna-Rajshahi track after crashing into the island of the crossing. The truck driver fortunately managed to get off the vehicle moments before the collision.
Western Railway Pakshi Divisional Transport Officer (DTO) Anwar Hossain said that rail communication on the Pabna-Rajshahi route was suspended for nearly three hours because of the accident.

Road communication was also suspended on the busy Pabna-Dhaka highway for about three hours, officials said.
"Train communication resumed only after the damaged engine of the ill-fated train was replaced with one brought from the Ishwardi locomotive factory, the DTO said.

Man kills wife, attempts suicide in Ctg
A man tried to end his life after allegedly stabbing his wife to death in Chattogram Wednesday night. Police said a family quarrel led to the crime.
The deceased was identified as Juthika, 21, wife of Abhi Dhar of Banshkhali in Chattogram.

According to police, a heated argument broke out between Abhi and his wife at the latter's maternal house in the Sitakunda municipality area on Wednesday night.
In a fit of rage, Abhi stabbed Juthika, leaving her seriously injured. As she was bleeding profusely, Abhi panicked and consumed poison, cops said.
Later, local residents rushed the injured to Sitakunda Health Complex, where Juthika was declared dead on arrival.

Abhi is currently undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.
Suman Banik, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station, said "the accused is under arrest". "A case will be filled in this regard," the OC said.

Chapainawabganj pourashava election postponed
The Chapainawabganj pourashava election has been postponed.
The authorities confirmed this on Tuesday. The election was set to be held on November 2.
However, District Election Officer Motawakkil Rahman said the cancellation has been communicated to them verbally from the Election Commission. Details would be disclosed officially on Wednesday, he said.
