Woman's decomposed body found in Jashore school's septic tank
The decomposed body of a woman was found in the septic tank of a government secondary school in Jashore Sadar upazila Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Fahima Begum, 35, daughter of Anshar Ali of Sat Pakhiya village in Tala upazila of Satkhira district.

Narendrapur police camp in-charge Supravat Mandal said the woman's brother identified the deceased as Fahima, a female brick kiln worker.
Shariful Islam, the woman's brother, said, "Fahima and her husband Jahangir Hossain worked as daily wagers at Dafadar brick kiln in Narendrapur. Fahima was physically and mentally abused by Jahangir."
Last month, when asked about his sister, Jahangir didn't respond properly. "So, I suspect he killed my sister and dumped the body in the septic tank."

Shiv Pad Biswas, headmaster of Narendrapur Secondary School, where the body was found, said that they opened the septic tank after foul smell was emanating and informed cops who fished it out.
Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Tajul Islam said the body was sent to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sylhet: 7-yr-old gets entangled in swing rope, dies
In a freak accident, a seven-year old girl allegedly choked to death after the rope of a swing got entangled around her neck in Sylhet on Thursday afternoon.
Mayisha, daughter of school teacher Shahjahan Kabir of the district's Fenchuganj upazila, was playing with her sister at a park near their house in Mogolpur village when her neck accidentally got entangled in the rope of the swing she was riding on.

Hearing the screams of Mayisha's sister, their mother rushed to the park and took her to Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Md Shafayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of Fenchuganj police station, said they were aware of the tragedy.

30 hurt in Cumilla gas cylinder blast
At least 30 people suffered injuries as a gas cylinder used to inflate balloons exploded at Biruli village in Cumilla on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 5 pm when Anwar Hossain, a balloon vendor, was inflating balloons using the gas cylinder to sale those at neighboring village Mogra, said witnesses.

Anwar and some children sustained injuries, said Faruq Hossain, officer-in-charge of Nangalkot police station.
The injured were taken to Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex and Cumilla Medical College Hospital, he said.
Cumilla Medical Hospital authorities said until 9 pm 19 injured people were admitted and of them four including children were in critical condition.

Man tests Covid positive on return from India
A man who returned from India to Bangladesh on Thursday tested positive for coronavirus, said officer-in-charge of Benapole check-post immigration, Raju Ahmed.
The patient is Polash Chandra Das, 36, a resident of Narkelbaria village of Bagharpara Upazila in Jashore. He went to India last month for treatment.

He returned to Bangladesh along the Benapole border on Thursday noon.
It is not confirmed whether the patient was carrying the Omicron variant of coronavirus. It will be known after the test, said health official of Sharsha Upazila Dr Yusuf Ali.

University student found dead in Chattogram
A student of International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) was found dead at her residence at Navy gate colony of Chattogram city early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Zakia Chowdhury, daughter of ATM Jobaer Chowdhury of the area.
She was a second year student of the English literature department of the university.
Police said as Zakia did not respond despite repeated calls her parents broke open the door of her room only to see her hanging from a fan around 3am.

On information, police came and recovered the body.
Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of EPZ Police Station, said the body was sent to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) morgue.
The girl might have committed suicide and cause of her death will be known after a postmortem, said the OC.
A case has been filed in this regard, the OC added.

Tortured for 3 days over loan default, 30-yr-old dies in Lalmonirhat
A 30-year-old man, who was allegedly tortured by a newly elected member of Chalbala union parishad over a loan default, died at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Anwarul Islam, son of Majibur of Madanpur village in Aditmari upazila.

Golam Rasul, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj police station, said the member of ward 9 of Chalbala UP, Mozammel Haque, along with his brother and son, went to Anwarul's house on January 4 and asked him to repay the loan he took from them.
Later, they allegedly abducted Anwarul, kept him confined to a room for three days and tortured him. The UP member also severed a finger of Anwarul, police said.
Anwarul's family dialled 999 and police eventually rescued Anwarul from a thatched house, adjacent to the house of UP member Mozammel, on January 6.
Later, he was taken to Kaliganj Upazila Hospital from where he was shifted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Anwarul succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening.
In the meantime, Anwarul’s family lodged a complaint at the Kaliganj police station, based on which an FIR was lodged against five people, including the UP member, by cops.

Mosharraf Hossain Bhuttu, 30, brother of Mozammel, and his son, Sujon, 24, have also been made accused in the case.
When contacted, UP member Mozammel denied the allegations against him.
However, police arrested Mozammel and his brother Bhuttu in this connection. “Efforts are on to arrest the other accused,” said the OC.

2 dead, 4 injured in Brahmanbaria road crash
Two persons were killed and four others injured when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw veered off the road and plunged into a ditch after a collision with a truck on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway in Brahmanbaria early on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Kawsar Alam, 35, a resident of Cumilla, and his passenger Khul Islam, of Kishoreganj. All the victims were occupants of the auto-rickshaw.

Eye-witnesses said the auto-rickshaw with five passengers plunged into the roadside ditch following a collision with the truck on the high-speed corridor in Kasba upazila, leaving its two occupants dead on the spot and four others injured.
The injured have been admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, police said.
Md Shahjalal Alam, officer-in-charge of the Khantihata Highway Police, said the bodies was sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem.

Rape case accused arrested in Sylhet
A fugitive accused in a rape case has been arrested from Sreepur Tea Garden in Sylhet after he took Indian citizenship to escape sentence.
The arrestee was identified as Sujit Nomo Biswas, son of late Projes Biswas of Vitrikhel Guchhogram village of Jaintapur Upazila.

Golam Dastagir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jaintapur Police Station, said Sujit was a fugitive accused in the rape case. He was trying to escape sentence with Indian citizenship.
On Tuesday, Sujit entered Bangladesh through the Sreepur Tea Garden border point as he did frequently. On information, police arrested him after confirming his identity, the OC said.

Sujit was brought before the court on Wednesday, Dastagir added.
A rape case was filed against Sujit at Jaintapur Police Station in June 18, 2020. He escaped to India about one and half years ago and took shelter at his sister’s place. He changed his name as Roni Roy taking Indian citizenship with his sister’s help, he added.

Young man stabbed dead in Manikganj
A 35-year-old man was stabbed to death by his rivals at Joymantap New Bus Stand in Singair upazila of Manikganj district.
The victim was identified as Md Julhash, son of Nawab Ali of Fakirpara village in the upazila.

Shafiqul Islam Mollah, officer-in-charge of Singair Police Station, said Julhash and Dulal, son of Mujibur of Beparipara village, had long been at loggerheads.
As a sequel to their long rivalry, the family members of Julhash assaulted Dulal on December 16 last year over the issue.
Later, Dulal’s father Mujibur lodged a complaint against nine people, including Julhash, and police arrested Julhash in this connection.
On January 12, Julhash was freed from jail after securing bail in the case.

When Julhash went to the bus stand area for having tea in the evening, 8-10 people, led by Dulal, swooped on him and stabbed Julhash indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
He was taken to Enam Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared dead in the night.
On information, police went to the spot and arrested Mujibur in this connection, said OC.

BNP leader Harris Chy dies of Covid
BNP leader Harris Chowdhury died at a hospital in the UK about three months ago, claimed family sources.
Ashiq Chowdhury, Harris Chowdhury’s cousin and chairman of Kanaighat upazila parishad, on Tuesday posted on his facebook profile that Harris died three months ago.
Ashiq said that Haris's daughter Munnu Chowdhury informed him about her father’s death over the phone.

Harris was undergoing treatment at hospital in London after he tested positive for covid-19 in August last year. He also returned to his residence after being tested negative. However, he died after suffering from post covid complications, according to the Facebook post of Ashiq.
Ashiq said Harris was buried in London. He lived in London with his family. However he did not know where in London Harris had died.
Harris was the political secretary of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia during the tenure of the BNP-led four-party alliance. The leader fled soon after the BNP was ousted amid corruption allegations. He was sentenced to life in 2018 in the August 21 grenade attack case.
