Dhaka Test: Iyer, Ashwin guide India's win from a lost position
On a tricky Mirpur pitch, Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin showed exemplary performances and steered India to a thrilling three-wicket win in Dhaka against Bangladesh.
After a dramatic loss of seven wickets for a total of 74 runs in pursuit of 145, India needed 71 runs to achieve victory, with only three wickets left and Bangladesh's spinners continuing to dominate on the home pitch. Miraculously, Iyer and Ashwin joined forces and managed to secure the 71-run partnership needed to defy all odds, ultimately crushing Bangladesh's seemingly inescapable victory.
Over 5,000 passionate fans filled the Mirpur galleries, a sight rarely seen at Test matches and even more uncommon in the opening session of a Test in Bangladesh. All eyes were firmly fixed on the pitch, hoping for a victory to cheer about.
In the last 13 meetings between Bangladesh and India in Tests, the former had never come close to even a victory, thus evoking fans' excitement from far and wide to witness the game unfold from the first ball of day four.

They were fortunate to have Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz take three quick wickets in the morning, further pushing India into trouble.
Along the process, Mehidy completed his ninth five-wicket haul in Test.
At that point, when India had slumped to 74-7, victory seemed almost certain for Bangladesh due to the Mirpur pitch that was proving difficult to negotiate with its spin-friendly conditions.
But from there on, Iyer and Ashwin stole the show and guided India home.
Bangladesh made every effort to break the partnership between Iyer and Ashwin. They fashioned some good opportunities - the brightest of which rose when Ashwin was at the crease. Mehidy hurled a regular delivery around middle and leg, which Ashwin attempted to defend but managed only an edge. Unfortunately, Mominul Haque at the short fine leg failed to latch onto the chance, which eventually left Bangladesh short of victory.
Shakib strategically brought in an extra pace bowler for two overs when he noticed that spin bowling was not yielding the desired results, with the intention to disrupt the formidable partnership between Iyer and Ashwin.

Khaled Ahmed, the pacer, gave away 12 runs in those two overs, though it failed to make a difference in the game. However, those 12 balls could have provided some respite to the batters, who were feeling the pressure against the spinners.
Eventually, Iyer and Ashwin remained unbeaten for 29 and 42 runs, respectively, completing a win that will be remembered for a long to them.
Bangladesh went to bat first in the match and put up 227 runs, led by Mominul Haque's 84. India responded with a stronger performance, as Pant and Iyer both scored well to build a first-innings lead of 87 runs, bringing the team's total score to 314.
In their second innings of the match, Bangladesh put a good effort, with Zakir Hasan scoring a fifty to help push their tally to 231. India thus had a target of 145 for a win.

Shakib removed Jaydev Unadkat in the second over of the day. Jaydev hit a six in the first over bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and survived an LBW appeal by the umpire’s call.
Mehidy put further pressure by removing Rishabh Pant and overnight not-out batter Axar Patel.
With this, Mehidy completed his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests. He had taken three more on day three.
After losing 7 for 74, Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin came together and are guiding India on a difficult Mirpur surface.

Shahid Afridi new interim chief selector of Pakistan
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named former captain Shahid Afridi as interim chief selector of the men's team and ex-internationals Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar as members of the selection panel.
Najam Sethi, new chairman of the PCB's management committee, dissolved the previous committee that was headed by Mohammad Wasim.
Sethi fired Ramiz Raja as PCB chairman Thursday after the government appointed a management committee to form a new governing board within four months.
Former Test player Haroon Rasheed, one of 14 members of the new interim management committee, was named as convenor of the selection committee.
Wasim, a former Pakistan middle-order batter, was appointed in 2020 and was expected to stay until next year's 50-over World Cup in India.
Sethi welcomed Afridi as head of the selection panel and hoped the committee "will make brave and bold decisions that will help us produce a strong and competitive side in the series against New Zealand."

Pakistan already announced a 16-strong squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand that starts Monday and it was not clear whether the new selection committee will now make changes.
Afridi scored 11,196 runs and took 541 wickets with his leg-spin bowling in his 27 Test matches, 398 ODIs and 99 T20s. He also captained the team in 83 international matches. He was a member of the team which won the 2009 T20 World Cup in England.
"We need to get back to winning ways," Afridi said in a statement. "I have no doubts that through meritocratic and strategic selection decisions, we will help the national side perform strongly in the series against New Zealand and reclaim the confidence of our fans."
New Zealand will play their first international matches in Pakistan since 2003 when they last toured the country for a limited-overs series.
Pakistan suffered a 3-0 clean sweep against England last week, their first whitewash at home in a series featuring three or more Test matches.

Dhaka Test: A Tigers win absolutely possible, says Liton after day three
Bangladesh's wicket-keeper batter Liton Das has expressed optimism regarding their chances of coming away with a win in the ongoing Dhaka Test against India.
At the close of day three, India slumped to 45-4 in pursuit of 145 runs. In the last session of the day, the tourists had lost four wickets, thanks to Mehidy Hasan Miraz's three-wicket haul.
"A win is absolutely possible," Liton said in the post-day press conference Saturday. "We need to take early wickets tomorrow. If we can take early wickets, it will be difficult for them to win the match, no matter how small the target is."
Both Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli were dismissed before the end of the day's play. However, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer are yet to bat.

Dhaka Test: India pursuing 145 as Mehidy bags 3 wickets
India's pursuit of 145 runs in the last innings of the Dhaka Test proved to be a challenging task as they lost four wickets for just 37 runs on Saturday evening. With six wickets still in hand, India now needs another 100 runs to reach the target.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, the most experienced batters of India's setup, have been among the big losses for the Indian batting line-up.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz has tested India's top-order batters with his superb spin bowling and has been largely victorious, claiming three out of the four wickets lost by India in their second innings so far, conceding only 12 runs.
Earlier, Bangladesh ended their first innings on 231, with Liton Das scoring the highest of 73. Zakir Hasan also hit a fifty
The hosts started the day with seven without losing any wickets. But in the first session of the day, Bangladesh lost four wickets, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Mushfiuqr Rahim failing to offer any challenge to the Indian bowlers.

IPL 2023: Shakib, Litton roped in by KKR
Bangladesh Test and T20 captain Shakib Al Hasan, along with the stylish yet destructive Litton Kumer Das, a top order bat who can also keep wickets, have been signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), in an auction held Friday.
While Shakib is a familiar figure in the IPL, Litton has received his inaugural call to the highly lucrative T20 tournament.
Shakib, one of the best allrounders of the current age, went unsold when his name was first called at Friday's auction. Despite his reputation, no team showed interest in signing him. However, Kolkata picked him up for INR 1.5 crores when his name was called again. Litton also found his home with the team owned by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, going for INR 50 lakhs.
Litton scored 1388 runs with eight fifties in 65 T20I matches he played for Bangladesh. In domestic level T20s, he played 160 matches and scored 3443 runs with the highest score of 78 not out.
Undoubtedly what made the difference for him this time is the blazing assault he launched against the Indian attack when Bangladesh and India squared off in October's ICC T20 World Cup. Opening the innings for the Tigers after India had posted a stiff target of 186 to win for their smaller neighbours, Das threatened to take the game away from the Indians with a 21-ball 50: the second-fastest by a Bangladeshi batsman in T20Is, next to Mohd. Ashraful, who did it off 20 balls against the West Indies.

Once Das was unluckily run out for a memorable 60 off just 27 balls, featuring seven hits to the fence and three that went over it, Bangladesh's hopes in that game quickly faded.
Shakib's IPL performance over the span of 2011-2021 has been decent during this period, he played a total of 71 matches for two teams— Kolkata and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
He has scored a total of 793 runs with the highest score of 66*, and a batting average of 19.82. He took 63 wickets with the best bowling of 3/17 and an average of 29.19. He has yet to take a five-wicket haul in IPL.
The other Bangladeshi player who will play in the next IPL is Mustafizur Rahman. The Delhi Capitals retain the left-arm pacer.
