Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe: T20 series begins Saturday
The three-match T20I series between visitors Bangladesh and hosts Zimbabwe is set to begin Saturday.
The first match will take place at 5pm at the Harare Sports Club.
Wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan Sohan will lead Bangladesh in this series. He replaced Mahmudullah Riyad as the T20I captain of the Tigers for this tour. If Sohan does better as a captain, he has all the chances to lead the Tigers in the shorter format of the game for a longer period.
However, Bangladesh will miss the services of Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Riyad in this series.
While Shakib is out for personal reasons, Mushfiqur and Riyad were rested by the team management. Shakib will also miss the ODI series, but Mushfiq and Riyad will take part in it.
Bangladesh included uncapped left-handed batter Parvez Hossain Emon in this tour. Parvez did well in the Bangladesh Premier League. Also, he was an important member of Bangladesh during their ICC U-19 World Cup triumph in 2020.

After the T20I series, both the teams will lock horns in a three-match ODI series starting on August 5. The last two ODIs will be played on August 7 and 10.

Mithun hopes for competitive cricket in WI tour
Mohammad Mithun, the top-order batter and the captain of Bangladesh A team, said he is hoping for competitive cricket in West Indies tour.
Bangladesh A will take on their West Indian counterparts in two unofficial Tests and three one-dayers. All the matches will be played at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.
“I believe the series will be more competitive than the domestic cricket,” Mithun said on Thursday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium before leaving Dhaka for West Indies.
“The West Indies A team is a strong opponent. The players who would play for the national team are part of their A team. So this series is going to be a tough one for us,” Mithun added.
Mithun played his last international match back in 2021. He has been out of the national setup since. But this time, he is going to lead the A team on an important tour.
“It’s a challenge for me,” Mithun said. “But I’m not feeling any extra pressure. We are going to represent Bangladesh A team. If someone does better in this tour, he might get a chance in the national team.”

Abdur Razzak, the national selector, who is traveling with the team to the West Indies, this series may provide Bangladesh with a solution for their Test debacle.
“We know how we play in Tests. We want the players of the Bangladesh A team to get competitive cricket so that they can prepare themselves for the toughest form of cricket,” Abdur Razzak told the media.

Sri Lanka to host Asia Cup in UAE, ACC confirms
After much speculation, the Asian Cricket Council finally confirmed that the ACC Asia Cup will be hosted by Sri Lanka Cricket in the UAE.
It means, the Lankan cricket board remained the official organizer of the event, but they’ll have to host the event in the UAE due to the ongoing political turmoil in the island nation.
This year’s Asia Cup will be played in T20 format between August 27 and September 11.
The decision was earlier announced by Sourav Ganguly, the president of BCCI, but an official announcement from the Asian Cricket Council was due until Wednesday.

ZIM vs BAN 2022: T20I series fixtures, H2H record, 1st match preview
The Bangladesh Cricket Board made a crucial decision by resting veteran players for the ZIM vs BAN 2022 T20I series, which will enable the other cricketers to stand up and demonstrate leadership abilities on the international stage. Oppositely, Zimbabwe's recent dominance in the Twenty20 World Cup Global Qualifier has instilled some faith in their abilities. Let's look at the schedule for the bilateral T20I series and the preview of the first match.
Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe: Head-to-Head T20I Records
Bangladesh first met Zimbabwe in a T20 format match back in November 2006, which they won by 43 runs. Since then, two teams have played against each other in 16 Twenty20 international matches. BAN vs ZIM 1st T20I 2022: Match Preview
When the BCB decided to name wicket-keeper batter Nurul Hasan the captain of Bangladesh for the ZIM vs BAN 2022 T20I series, excitement among Bangladesh cricket fans increased. There is no doubt that all eyes will be on Nurul Hasan’s captaincy. On the other hand, Zimbabwe recently ensured their qualification for the T20 World Cup 2022 main event by winning the Global Qualifier B competition. They will be up to putting up a real fight against Bangladesh.
Bangladesh
In the ZIM vs BAN 2022 T20I series, Bangladesh expect Nurul Hasan to demonstrate his potential as captain. His leadership ability will be closely monitored by the BCB in the series as the cricket board is in search of a new leader for the future.
Besides, finding the right opening combination is another key area where they need a solution. There are five top order batters in the squad, and the team management has to come up with a decision on which two they want to back up. Other than that, the remaining spots are more or less confirmed for the opening match.

Zimbabwe
The Zimbabwe Cricket Board is yet to announce their squad for the T20I series against Bangladesh. But the expectation is that the players who have performed well in the recent ICC Global Qualifier B get a chance in the series.
With less than three months left before the T20 World Cup 2022, the selectors may not want to make unnecessary experiments for this bilateral series. Apart from winning the series, finding the right combination for the forthcoming World Cup would be Zimbabwe’s main goal from this bilateral contest.

Aftermath
Will Nurul Hasan-led Bangladesh team be able to meet expectations in the absence of experienced cricketers in the series? The ability is certainly there; they just have to execute the game plan on the field. Oppositely, the confidence level is high at the moment for the Zimbabwean Twenty20 side.
The home side can feel that they have a genuine chance to overcome the visitors in the 3-match T20I series, especially in the absence of some of the key Bangladeshi players. Therefore, the ZIM vs BAN 2022 Twenty20 series promises an interesting contest to watch.

Not having Ben Stokes in the team is a major loss for the English campaign in the ENG vs SA 2022 T20I Series. The absence of Stokes in the squad has opened the door for others to showcase their abilities on the international stage and make a statement to the selectors for considering England’s World Cup squad.
Phil Salt, Sam Curran, Harry Brook, and David Willey will fight for two places in the lower middle-order, where batters are required to be more aggressive for a perfect finish. The competition will be between them to find a place in the playing XI. Two will be seen playing the first match in Bristol. If anyone fails, they can be dropped for the second contest.

England have a settled top order, including Bairstow and Livingstone, who come at no.4 and 5 respectively. Reece Topley is now an automatic choice after his recent performances in the white-ball series. Besides, Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid are regular members of England’s T20 side.
Predicted Playing XI
Top-Order: Jason Roy, Jos Buttler (captain & wicket-keeper), Dawid Malan;
Middle-Order: Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran;
Lower-Order: Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley.
South Africa
Regular captain Temba Bavuma will miss the T20I series against England due to an elbow injury. Stand-in captain David Miller is one of the most sought-after twenty20 players in the world right now. He just needs to instill confidence in the players that they are a competitive side to overcome England in their own backyard.

South Africa’s T20 side’s recent performance has been encouraging, winning six out of ten matches they have played since last year's T20 World Cup. The team has some world-class power hitters and lethal pacers who have the ability to take the game away from the opposition on their own.
Quinton de Kock, Van der Dussen, Markram, and Miller can be ruthless against the opposition. In bowling, Rabada, Ngidi, and Nortje are well-equipped pacers for the shortest format of the game. The Proteas team management may find it difficult to pick a spinner from Shamsi and Maharaj.
Predicted Playing XI
Top-Order: Quinton de Kock (wicket-keeper), Rilee Rossouw, Rassie van der Dussen;
Middle-Order: Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller (captain), Dwaine Pretorius, Tabraiz Shamsi;
Lower-Order: Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi.

Bristol’s weather forecast & toss prediction
There is no chance of rain in Bristol on Wednesday, and the weather is expected to be cloudy and cool, ideal for a T20 match. Batters can rule over bowlers on this ground. However, those who have variety in bowling can find a way to stop the batters and get success from Bristol’s wicket.
Bottom Line
Jos Buttler has failed to lead England to a series victory since taking over as the country's permanent white-ball formats captain. The Buttler-led England team has won four matches and lost five, including two series losses to the Rohid-led Indian side. He will be desperate to clinch the ENG vs SA 2022 T20I Series and find the right combination for the shorter-version of the game.
David Miller has led South Africa twice in the Twenty20 format, with one victory and one defeat. It’s an opportunity for Miller to showcase his leadership ability against quality opposition. If he succeeds, the South African cricket board may consider him to do the role on a permanent basis in the future.

Bangladesh T20I team leaves Dhaka for Zimbabwe
Bangladesh T20I team is set to leave Dhaka tonight for Zimbabwe where they will play a three-match series against the hosts.
Earlier on Monday night, a five-member team left Dhaka for Zimbabwe. And the members of the national team who will only play ODIs in try his series will join the team later.
Bangladesh will play the T20I series under the leadership of Nurul Hasan Sohan who recently took over the role from Mahmudullah Riyad.

Bangladesh will miss the service of senior players in this series. Tamim Iqbal has recently retired from T20Is while Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad have been rested from this format, and Shakib Al Hasan will not travel to Zimbabwe for personal reasons. So a young team will take on Zimbabwe in their home.
The Bangladesh team is scheduled to start the tour of Zimbabwe on July 27. The first group of cricketers will fly for Zimbabwe on July 27 morning from Dhaka. The second group will travel from Dhaka on July 30.
Along with the three-match T20I series, Bangladesh will also play a three-match ODI series against the hosts. All the matches will be played at the Harare Sports Club Ground.

Mahedi aims to take a bigger role in Bangladesh team
Allrounder Mahedi Hasan said he is confident in taking a more significant role in the Bangladesh team. The right-handed allrounder is part of the Bangladesh team that is set to tour Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI and three-match T20I series.
“It’s inevitable that the senior players will leave the game one day,” Mahedi told the reporters on Tuesday. “And those who are juniors now will become seniors. When Shakib led Bangladesh in the 2011 World Cup, he was only 22. So we will also become seniors, which is just a matter of time.”
Read:Sohan up for new challenges
Mahedi believes the upcoming series is a great chance for the young team to flourish and make their own decisions.
“When we were newcomers, the senior players took all the responsibilities as the parents do for young children,” he said. “Since we won’t get the service of the senior players, we will have to make our decisions. It’s a great chance for us to show our abilities.”
Mahedi played his maiden international match in 2018. So he has spent more than three years in international cricket. In that sense, he believes, he is not a young player like Munum Shahriar or Parvez Hossain Emon. While Munim played a few T20Is, Parvez is yet to get his international cap in any format of the game.
Bangladesh are not a good team in T20Is. In their recent series against the West Indies, Bangladesh lost by 2-0 in a three-match series with one match being washed away due to heavy rain.
Mahedi thinks Bangladeshi batters cannot be the big hitters like the West Indians, but according to him, Bangladeshi batters can do better by their ability to take singles and hit fours.
Mahedi played 34 T20Is and three ODIs so far. He bagged 27 wickets in T20Is along with scoring 222 runs.

BAN vs ZIM T20I Series 2022: 3 challenges for Nurul Hasan as captain
Nurul Hasan Sohan will be in charge of the Bangladeshi team in the forthcoming BAN vs ZIM T20I Series 2022. This is a real challenge for the wicket-keeper batter as he has never captained Bangladesh in any format of the game. It is believed that BCB has named Nurul as a makeshift captain for the series since all of the senior players took a break for the tour. There will be some challenges for the newly appointed skipper which he needs to overcome through his decision-making and performance. The three challenges Nurul Hasan could face in the series are discussed in this article.
The challenges Nurul Hasan could face in the Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe T20I series
There will be some challenges for Nurul Hasan Sohan while leading the Bangladesh Twenty20 side. He needs to overcome the obstacles through individual performance and leadership capabilities. Let’s take a look at three challenges that Nurul needs to focus more on in the BAN vs ZIM T20I Series 2022.
On-field decision making
Rested captain Mahmudullah Riyad has been criticized for his on-field decision-making in the recent series. His approach to dealing with the situations has been sometimes ineffective. That is why the results haven’t come in Bangladesh’s way since the T20 World Cup 2022. Stand-in captain Nurul Hasan has to be thoughtful and needs a clear vision of what he wants to achieve when making decisions on the field.
Read West Indies vs India Series 2022: Head-to-Head Stats and Full Fixtures
Nurul promises fearless cricket and a team-first culture in his latest press conference. Since Zimbabwe is the opponent, a difficult series is not anticipated. The Bangladesh team needs to be aggressive towards Zimbabwe and try to put them under strain. The upcoming series will be a great opportunity for Nurul to showcase his leadership capabilities. He can justify his selection as captain by taking the right decisions on the field.
Picking the ideal lineup for playing XI
The selectors picked five top-order batters, three batting all-rounders, one spinning all-rounder, one left-arm spinner and four pacers apart from Nurul Hasan. The Bangladesh team management and captain will face a selection dilemma when picking the right playing XI. Which two players will open the innings? How many all-rounders are to be included in the team? How many spinners and fast bowlers should be incorporated into the team? Will the comeback players get a chance to play in the series?
These are a few topics Nurul and team management have to ponder before making the final playing XI. Nurul must convey his intentions and philosophy to the management in order to field his preferred players on the pitch. However, making a sensible and right combination is a must to have a winnable team.
Read ICC T20 World Cup 2022: How Hard is Bangladesh’s Group 2?
Individual Performance
The Captain needs to lead from the front by encouraging individual performances. Nurul has been constantly picked by the selectors for his wicket-keeping ability and impressive domestic record in the Twenty20 format. However, his batting performance hasn’t been impressive since making his return to the Bangladesh T20I side last year. He has scored only 193 runs in 21 innings with a just over 100 strike rate since July 2021.

Nurul might bat at position five or six in Bangladesh's innings. His batting position hence demanded power-hitting skills. Does Nurul possess the ability to hit big shots? He has improved his power hitting in domestic Twenty20 competitions in recent seasons, but he hasn't been able to carry it over to the international level. Nurul Hasan should strive to increase his strike rate and power hitting in the death overs.

Bottom Line
There is no doubt that Nurul Hasan has an impressive resume in domestic T20 tournaments as captain. He has a very good winning ratio as captain in the DPL Twenty20 tournament. Nurul also led Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to win the 2019 Dhaka Premier Division T20 Cricket League. However, the wicket-keeper batter's experience as skipper of the national team will be entirely fresh. There will be added pressure on him as the expectations from the fans will be very high.
Therefore, he needs to be mentally prepared to face harsh criticism. Nurul Hasan can guide the Bangladesh team to clinch the BAN vs ZIM T20I Series 2022 if he can overcome all the major challenges and stay focused on his task.

Is the future of ODI cricket in jeopardy?
One-day cricket was without a doubt the most popular format among cricket players and spectators from the 1980s through the first decade of the 2000s. One-day cricket was developed with the intent of expanding the game's appeal and fan base. The format quickly gained popularity and grabbed the attention of more unconventional cricket fans, and thus the purpose was fulfilled. However, ODI cricket has been experiencing an existential crisis since the ICC introduced T20 in 2005. Is it time for the ICC to reevaluate the future of the ODI format?
How did the ODI format help cricket gain popularity?
Australia and England played the first-ever ODI match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on January 5, 1971. Initially, it started off as a Test match, but it rained out for the first three days. The two sides then opted to play a one-day match with 40 overs (eight balls each over) for each side. Australia won the inaugural ODI by five wickets, creating history.
Fans witnessed aggression from the batters; fielders were more active in the field to save runs; and there was urgency as the overs were limited. These factors during the match made the spectators more interested in the format. The ICC realized that limited overs is the future of cricket, at least to reach a wider audience.

The International Cricket Council decided to organize a World Cup event every four years. The first edition of the competition was held in 1975 in England. One-day cricket is played in white dress and with a red ball. The ICC organized the first three ODI World Cups with 60-overs per side, which was reduced to 50-overs per side from the 1987 edition.
In the meantime, Kerry Packer, an Australian media tycoon, established a World Series of Cricket competition, in which he introduced coloured uniforms, floodlights, white-ball and dark sight screens, etc. The World Series took place between 1977 and 1979. Inspired by the Kerry Packer vision for one-day cricket, the ICC later realized that making some changes was necessary to give a new look to the format. Therefore, coloured player clothing, white-ball, black sight screens, and floodlights were introduced in the 1992 World Cup.
Tri-nation and four-nation series were played regularly between the ICC’s full member teams in the 80s and 90s, which was massively popular back then. The ODI cricket series in the UAE in the late 80s and early 90s was also popular among cricket fans worldwide. The format undoubtedly helped the ICC to attract more nations to become associate members of the organization. In terms of the economic aspect, the ICC had benefited a lot. They were able to take more initiatives for the development of the game in the associated nations.
Read ICC T20 World Cup 2022: How Hard is Bangladesh’s Group 2?
The aggressiveness of the batters, the variety of the bowlers, the athleticism of the fielders, and the interesting rules for the limited-overs format made people more interested in cricket, which Test cricket couldn’t offer. Many popular cricket stars dominated ODI cricket from the late 1970s to the early 2000s. Fans were keen to see the star cricketers play for their countries in the ODI format. Overall, the one-day format laid the foundation to popularize cricket on a global platform.
The ODI World Cup always draws more spectators. One of the most popular sporting events in the world in 2019 was the 50-over Cricket World Cup, which was played in the UK. According to reports, 1.6 billion people watched the 2019 Cricket World Cup, while 4.6 billion people saw videos related to the tournament. More importantly, the UK's economy benefited by 352.6 million pounds overall. Although these numbers are quite impressive, the ODI format is slowly being overshadowed by T20I cricket.

The introduction of T20 and how has it affected the one-day format's existence?
The ICC introduced T20 cricket in 2005 with the goal of creating a new format with a shorter game duration than the previous two formats in order to compete with other international sports. People don't have to watch a match in the stadium for eight hours because the Twenty20 format can be finished in three and a half hours.
The first T20I match was held between Australia and New Zealand on February 17, 2005, which the Aussie side won by 44 runs. Two years later, the ICC organized the first-ever World Twenty20 tournament in 2007. India won the inaugural edition of the competition by beating Pakistan in the final. The championship match between India and Pakistan was the 10th most watched global TV event in the year 2007.
The International Cricket Council realized they had discovered a lucrative format after the first ICC T20 World Cup, which helped to even further popularize cricket. It was agreed to hold the competition every two years by cricket's highest regulatory body. The ICC has hosted seven T20 World Cups since 2007, and every one of them has been a huge success. Besides, the domestic T20 competitions started to kick off in the late years of the first decade of 2000.
Read ENG vs SA 2022: Revived South Africa hope to win ODI series in Manchester
According to reports, India have contributed 70% of the ICC's total revenue, implying that they have a larger market than other cricketing nations. With more than 1.2 billion people who are crazy about cricket, the BCCI had no doubt that forming a domestic T20 competition would be a huge success. The success of the ICL, a private cricket league, also encouraged the Indian Cricket Board to introduce a franchise-based T20 cricket league.
The massive interest in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008 encouraged other cricket boards to launch domestic Twenty20 competitions in their respective countries. The following years, the cricket world saw the formation of the BBL, BPL, SPL, CPL, and PSL. Besides, many T20 cricket leagues are staged each year nowadays across the world.
The richest cricket league in the world, the IPL, recently made a broadcast deal worth $6.2 billion for the next five years (2023–2027). This is an astronomical number, which suggests that the T20 format is the future of cricket in terms of economic aspects and to globalize the game. The ICC is also keen to promote the T20 format in the new territory rather than the one-day format. In the recent FTP fixtures, the number of ODIs has reduced significantly compared to the past.
Read WI vs IND ODI Series 2022: India eye whitewash, Windies aim strong show
From a player’s perspective, playing three formats is both physically and mentally draining. The former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram, the current South Africa wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock, the Australian batter Usman Khawaja and a host of ex and present cricketers, journalists and pundits have talked about the necessity of ODI cricket in the current scenario. They believe playing three formats at a time is very difficult for a player. A 50-over game has become "run-of-the-mill," according to Akram, while Khawaja believes the ODI format is slowly dying but the Test format will thrive.
England’s World Cup 2019 winning star, Ben Stokes, recently announced his retirement from one-day international cricket, citing a demanding international schedule as the reason for his decision. Ben Stokes’ decision to step aside from the one-day format, indicating his preference for playing Test cricket and support for the Twenty20 format in limited-overs cricket.
Let's take a look at how many Test, ODI, and T20 international matches have been played from 2017 to 2021 and 2012 to 2016 and see the increase in T20I matches in the last five years.

The statistics above demonstrate unequivocally that the ICC currently favors Twenty20 cricket over ODIs. Between January 2017 and December 2021, more than 800 T20I matches were played, as opposed to just over 500 ODI matches. However, the most important fact is that whereas just 357 Twenty20 International matches were played between 2012 and 2016, 879 of them were played between 2017 and 2021.

These statistics will continue to increase in the upcoming ICC FTP fixtures given how the T20 format is growing in popularity among general cricket fans. On the other hand, the number of games has remained constant in the Test format.
Way Forward
The ICC will always support Test cricket given that it's the game's traditional format. However, the one-day and Twenty20 formats require cricket's highest regulating body to make a sensible decision. The one-day format was primarily designed to increase the game's popularity. The success of ODI cricket over the past 50 years demonstrates that the mission was achieved. However, the audience test has evolved lately as more people now want entertainment that is more condensed and less time-consuming.
From both a commercial and popular perspective, T20 cricket should be the ICC's preferred brand. The one-day format has begun to lose its appeal since the introduction of T20, and in the future, this trend will continue. Additionally, it's challenging for the players to remain consistent and fit for all formats. The need for ODI cricket has been voiced by the cricketing community, and this may influence the ICC's decision in the years to come. Now time will say what will be the future of ODI cricket.
