Bangladesh vs West Indies Test Series 2022: SWOT Analysis of Two Teams
Winning a cricket match demands a number of critical factors, including understanding and implementing the strengths on the field, overcoming shortcomings, seizing chances, and neutralizing threats. These factors will be crucial during the Bangladesh vs West Indies Test Series 2022. The opening Test of the two-match series will take place at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua from Thursday (June 16). A SWOT analysis of the two teams addresses several key issues ahead of the series opener. Let's take a quick look at each team's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
SWOT Analysis of the Bangladesh Test Team
The BCB selector announced a 15-member squad for the Bangladesh vs West Indies Test Series 2022. Important players such as Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam will all miss the series due to personal reasons and injury issues.
Strengths
Two of the experienced batters, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, along with the in-form Litton Das, will be key for Bangladesh during the series. Shakib and Tamim have a solid record against the Caribbean side, while Litton’s batting performance in the Test format over the last one and a half years has been very impressive.
Read BAN vs WI Test Series 2022: Five potential Bangladesh players to watch
In bowling, Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam’s spin bowling would be key for Bangladesh as West Indians are not well-equipped to play spin bowling. Individual records also favor Shakib and Taijul against the West Indies.

Weaknesses
Bangladesh will miss in-form Mushfiqur Rahim, who is skipping the series due to performing the Hajj pilgrimage. The veteran Mushfiqur was in great touch against Sri Lanka and was the top scorer for Bangladesh's team. Besides, not having off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has a brilliant record against West Indies, is another big loss for the visiting team.
Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam are two of the best Test bowlers at the moment, but they are not part of the squad due to injuries. Both Taskin and Shoriful were injured during the South Africa series. Shoriful made a return in the first Test against Sri Lanka, but he injured himself again during the match.Bangladesh will miss some of their key players during the series, which is their biggest weakness.
Opportunities
Shakib Al Hasan’s record against West Indies as a captain has been superb. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh whitewashed West Indies (2-0) at home in 2018. The Shakib-led Bangladesh team has faced the West Indies five times, winning three and losing two. Team Tigers should be hopeful that captain Shakib will inspire everyone through his leadership to come out on top against the Windies. So, it will be a good opportunity for both Bangladesh and Shakib to improve their records against the Caribbean side.
Read Australia’s tour to give Sri Lanka Cricket a financial boost
Bangladesh will overtake England in the ICC Test Championship points standings if they beat the Windies. Team Tigers are presently ranked ninth with 51 points in the ICC Test rankings. Bangladesh will receive 61 rating points if they win both of their matches against the Windies, but their standings will remain unchanged.
On an individual level, Shakib Al Hasan has an opportunity to score his 13,000 international runs. On the other hand, Tamim Iqbal is very close to reaching his 5,000-Test run milestone, while Najmul Hossain Shanto can also complete his 1,000 Test runs.
It will be a great opportunity for some of the young players to show off their skills and solidify their spot in the Test team. The series will provide young players with valuable experience that will help them grow as players.
Read BAN vs WI Test Series 2022: Five potential Bangladesh players to watch
Threats
In the latest series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh batters showed their weaknesses against the faster bowlers. Two Lankan pacers were so dominant over the Bangladeshi batters. There is no doubt that, in the West Indies, the pitches would be more suited to the pace bowlers. If the curators make more pace-friendly wickets, then it would pose a real threat to Bangladesh batters. Moreover, almost all of the Caribbean pacers had a great outing during their recent Test series against England.
Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel are two bowlers who have had better recent series records against Bangladesh. Both Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph have had strong performances against England, so they can be devastating. The Bangladesh team needs to come up with a proper and strategic plan against the West Indian fast bowlers.
If Bangladesh lose both matches, they would lose three important rating points. They will have 54 points if they level the series 1-1. However, the outcome of the series will have no impact on their rankings.

SWOT Analysis of the West Indies Test Team
The Windies Cricket Board has named a 12-man team for the first Test against Antigua and Barbuda. Veerasammy Permaul, Shamarh Brooks, and Kemar Roach were not selected for the first match. These players took part in the England series.
Strengths
The West Indian national team will benefit much from playing in their own backyard. Furthermore, the West Indian team's confidence is high right now after winning the England series 1-0. The Windies opener, Kraigg Brathwaite, had a fantastic series and was named Player of the Series. Joshua Da Silva, the wicket-keeper batsman, displayed his skills as both a batter and a keeper against England. Furthermore, all of the Windies' front-line pacers is in excellent form and is capable of terrorizing Bangladesh's batting line-up.

Weaknesses
Apart from opener Kraigg Brathwaite, the top and middle-order batters of the West Indies side have struggled with the bat in the recent series. This West Indian team doesn’t have enough quality spinners in their kitty to pose a real threat to Bangladesh's batting line-up, which is a major weakness for them.
In addition, seasoned pacer Kemar Roach will be assessed for fitness. Roach will be named to the first Test squad if he recovers from his injury. All-rounder, Jason Holder has been allowed a break and will miss the whole Bangladesh series.
Opportunities
The West Indies can close the gap with Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship points table if they manage to whitewash Bangladesh in the series. So, it will be a great opportunity for them to improve their percentage in the Test Championship points standings.

On an individual level, Kraigg Braithwaite can reach the 5,000-Test run milestone if he maintains his great run of form in the Bangladesh series. Besides, Kemar Roach and Jason Holder are on the verge of their 250 and 150 wicket milestones.
If the West Indies clean sweep Bangladesh, they have a chance to gain three vital rating points. However, it will have no effect on their rankings. Similarly, if the Windies draw the series, they would lose three crucial points.
This series will be a huge learning experience for the young West Indian players. Playing against two of the best spinners in the world, Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam, will provide them valuable experience for future matches.

Threats
Traditionally, West Indian batters are not known to play well against spinners. Bangladesh spinners can seize the opportunity of the West Indies' weakness and create pressure on their batting line-up. Particularly, Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam will pose a serious challenge to the Windies' batters. The host team must devise a strategy when facing the Bangladesh spinners.
If the West Indies lose the series 2-0, they will lose 9 points. Regardless, they will remain in 9th position.
Aftermath
The SWOT analysis of the two sides for the Bangladesh vs West Indies Test Series 2022 reveals that no team is favourite. Both teams have certain strong features as well as shortcomings that will affect their performance. In this scenario, the side that can limit its shortcomings throughout the series has a higher chance of dominating its opponent. The most essential thing for both sides is to concentrate on their capabilities and strive to surpass their opponents in order to have a competitive advantage.
Read Litton Das Reaches 12, Highest Ever Test Ranking in Career
Bangladesh's senior players and spin department are two strong areas. Therefore, Tamim, Shakib, Litton, and Taijul will need to be at their best throughout the series if they are to beat the Windies. Oppositely, Bangladesh's biggest concerns would be the current form of Windies Captain Kraigg Brathwaite and the Caribbean fast bowling unit.

Australia’s tour to give Sri Lanka Cricket a financial boost
The Australian cricket team is touring Sri Lanka for a full cricket series that might give the nation a boost amid the financial crisis.
Sri Lanka Cricket on Monday said all income from tickets for the three T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests would be donated to public welfare initiatives.
“These are tough times for our people,” Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva told reporters in Colombo. “We are indeed grateful to Cricket Australia and the Australian government for supporting this series despite the hardships we as a nation are facing.”
The island nation is experiencing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, barreling toward bankruptcy and saddled with foreign debt so big that it has no money left for basic imports. Sri Lankans are struggling to access the bare necessities like food, fuel, medicine and cooking gas.
Sri Lanka Cricket has already donated $2 million to the health sector to buy essential medicines.
Cricket in Sri Lanka was played mostly in empty stadiums for two years during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, although a 50% capacity crowd was allowed in for the test series against the West Indies in Galle last December.
The series will get started Tuesday with a T20 match at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, and will be the first time Sri Lankan fans are allowed into venues for limited-overs matches since the pandemic started.
Tickets went on sale Saturday and within five hours the T20s on Tuesday and Wednesday were sold out.

BAN vs WI Test Series 2022: Five potential Bangladesh players to watch
The forthcoming BAN vs WI 2022 Test series is crucial for the Bangladesh team in order to revive the country's longer format after losing two straight series. Shakib Al Hasan has taken over as captain after Mominul Haque was stripped of his duties. Will Bangladesh be able to overcome the West Indies and make a big comeback? The Tigers should be confident in their ability to exert pressure on the Caribbean side, as they have a number of talented players on their squad. Let's look at five players with better records against the West Indies and who might make a difference in the BAN vs WI Test series 2022.
Five Crucial Players for Bangladesh in the BAN vs WI Test Series 2022
Some Bangladesh players will have to shoulder extra responsibilities in order to win the Test series against the Caribbean team. Let's have a look at five Bangladesh players who might make an impact in the Test series against the West Indies.
Tamim Iqbal
Test Inn: 24 | Runs: 853 | HS: 128 | Ave: 35.54 | 100s: 1
Tamim Iqbal will be the most important player in batting for Bangladesh in the upcoming series as he has to play the anchor role. Bangladesh need to stay at the crease as long as possible to ensure Tamim gets a commanding total on board.
Read WI vs BAN Test Series 2022: Who has better record?
His record against the West Indies is the best among the Bangladesh players. Tamim has 427 runs in 12 innings in the West Indies, which is the most by any Bangladesh batter. The charismatic left-hander needs to continue his good run of form in the forthcoming series.
Shakib Al Hasan
Test Match: 11 | Runs: 813 | HS: 97 | Ave: 45.16 | 100s: 0 | Wickets: 46 | BBI: 6/33 | Ave: 24.54 | 5Ws: 3
Shakib Al Hasan has a great record against the West Indies, both as a player and as a captain. Bangladesh’s three out of four Test victories against the West Indies have come under Shakib Al Hasan’s captaincy. Shakib is the second-highest run scorer for Bangladesh against the West Indies. Besides, he has picked up 21 wickets in just 4 matches in the Caribbean Islands. Shakib will be the most important player for Bangladesh during the series.
Read ICC Player of the Month for May 2022: Check Out the Nominees
Litton Das
Test Inn: 9 | Runs: 326 | HS: 71 | Ave: 36.22 | 100s: 0
Litton Das’s Test record against West Indies hasn’t been impressive, but he has the potential to improve his record. Litton has been in outstanding form since 2021 and has become a more mature batter, especially in the longer-version format. In the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton has to take extra responsibility to strengthen the Bangladesh middle-order.
Taijul Islam
Test Match: 7 | Wickets: 33 | BBI: 6/33 | Ave: 26.30 | 5Ws: 2
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has been the main strike bowler for Bangladesh in the last two years in the Test format. He is the only Bangladeshi bowler who has taken 8 wickets in an innings. Taijul Islam has bagged 11 wickets in 3 matches on West Indian soil. His spin bowling could cause problems for the West Indian batting line-up. Therefore, Taijul could be a real difference-maker for Bangladesh.
Read Joe Root Reaches 10,000 Runs Milestone as England win First Test Against New Zealand
Mustafizur Rahman
Test Match: 2 | Wickets: 2 | BBI: 2/46 | Ave: 66.00 | 5Ws: 0
The cutter-master, Mustafizur Rahman,’s record against the West Indies is very poor. However, Mustafizur is the most reliable bowler among the pacers, especially in the absence of Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed. Mustafizur’s experience will be crucial, and he needs to step up for Bangladesh to provide important breakthroughs when needed.
Aftermath
It's never easy to perform on a consistent basis away from home. Therefore, expecting a strong display from the majority of Bangladesh's players is unrealistic. Players with a better record in the West Indies can make a big impact for Bangladesh in the BAN vs WI Test series 2022.

Recent Test Performance of Bangladesh
Bangladesh have played a total of 13 Test matches since 2021. Out of those, Bangladesh have won two matches, lost nine and drawn two matches. The victory over New Zealand earlier this year is the best performance of a Bangladesh Test side in recent times. Bangladesh are currently in the tenth position in the ICC World Test Championship rankings, with 16.67 percent.
Recent Test Performance of West Indies
The West Indies have played 13 Test matches since 2021. The Caribbean team has won four matches, lost five and drawn four. The Windies team is currently in sixth position with 35.71 percent.
Bottom Line
The WI vs BAN Test Series 2022 is set to be fiercely contested despite the fact that the West Indies have a better record against Bangladesh. Bangladesh's rise as a Test-playing nation is one of the reasons. Furthermore, Shakib Al Hasan, as captain, has an excellent record against the West Indies. Three of his captaincy victories in the Test format have come against the Windies. However, the team that can execute their game plans well on the field has a better chance of winning the series.

ICC Player of the Month for May 2022: Check Out the Nominees
The International Cricket Council announced the three finalists for the ICC Player of the Month for May 2022. The veteran batter from Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim, is one of the nominees for the coveted individual award. Sri Lankans Angelo Mathews and Asitha Fernando are the other two candidates. All three candidates had a great outing in the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Test series 2022 in the month of May. Let's take a look at how these players performed in the month of May.
ICC Player of the Month for May 2022: Who has a Strong Chance of Winning the Award?
Nominated players - Mushfiqur Rahim, Angelo Mathews and Asitha Fernando all had significant contributions to their respective teams in the recently concluded Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Test series 2022. Mushfiqur Rahim was the top performer for Bangladesh, while Angelo Mathews and Asitha Fernando played key roles in winning the series for Sri Lanka.
Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh)
Test: 2 | Runs: 303 | Ave: 151.50 | HS: 175* | 100s: 2
Mushfiqur Rahim made two centuries in the month of May during the Test series against Sri Lanka. Rahim completed his 5,000 Test runs during the first Test in Chattogram, becoming the first Bangladesh player to do so. He also made a hundred (105) and a 165-run partnership with Litton Das in the first innings of the first Test. Their effort helped the hosts to take a good first innings lead over the visitors.
Read Shakib Al Hasan's Captaincy Record in Test Cricket: An Overview
Mushfiqur also played an unbeaten 175*-run innings in the first innings of the second Test and, more importantly, his record-breaking 272-run stand with Litton Das for the sixth wicket helped Bangladesh to make a strong comeback in the first innings. Bangladesh lost the series 1-0 to Sri Lanka, so Mushfiqur's chance of winning the award is slimmer than the other two nominees because of that.
Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka)
Test: 2 | Runs: 344 | Ave: 172.00 | HS: 199 | 100s: 2
Angelo Mathews had a magnificent Test series against Bangladesh last month. He played a brilliant 199-run knock in the first innings of the first Test, which helped Sri Lanka put up a commendable total. However, Mathews's contribution in the second Test is even better. His 199-run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal on the sixth wicket helped Sri Lanka to take more than a 100-run lead over Bangladesh in the first innings of the series-decider match. Mathews was unbeaten with 145* runs. Sri Lanka went on to win the match by 10 wickets.
Read ENG vs NZ First Test 2022: England Seize Control of Series Opening Match
The experienced Angelo Mathews was the heart of the Lankan batting line-up in the Bangladesh series, and it was thanks to his contributions with the bat that they were able to defeat the hosts. Therefore, Mathews is the big favourite to win the award.
Asitha Fernando (Sri Lanka)
Test: 2 | Wkts: 13 | Ave: 16.61 | BBI: 6/51 | 5W: 1
Asitha Fernando stunned everyone by showing discipline and an effective bowling performance against Bangladesh in the Test series. Fernando had shown his talent by picking up three wickets in the first match, but it was his performance in the second Test that caught the eyes of everyone.
Read Joe Root Reaches 10,000 Runs Milestone as England win First Test Against New Zealand
In the first innings of the second match, Asitha and Kasun dismantled Bangladesh's batting order by picking up 9 wickets between them, with Asitha taking four of them. Asitha was even more destructive in the second innings, picking up 6 wickets and helping his team bowl Bangladesh out for only 169 runs. The target was only 29 for the Lankans, which they comfortably chased down without losing a wicket. Asitha Fernando is a strong contender for the award.
Verdict
The three players nominated for the ICC Player of the Month for May 2022 are all deserving candidates. Angelo Mathews, who was the most impactful player in the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka series, seems to have a better chance of winning it. Mathews was the winner of the Player of the Series award, which may give him an edge over other nominees. Asitha Fernando, who was the most troublesome bowler for Bangladesh's batting line-up, also has a strong chance to win the award. Mushfiqur Rahim was Bangladesh's best player during the Sri Lanka series. It won't come as a surprise if Mushfiqur outbids the other two for this honor.

Joe Root Reaches 10,000 Runs Milestone as England win First Test Against New Zealand
Former England captain Joe Root became only the fourteenth player in history to amass 10,000 Test runs while playing the opening match of the series against New Zealand at Lords. Joe Root reached the milestone with a match-winning unbeaten 115*-run effort in the second innings while pursuing 277 runs for victory. England won the match by 5 wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The first Test match report between England and New Zealand is discussed in this article, as well as Joe Root's Test career accomplishments.
Overview of Joe Root's Test Career
When Joe Root made his debut against India back in 2012, he was 22 years old. The talented middle-order batter was regarded highly by the ECB selectors back then. He didn’t disappoint them, as over the years he has become one of the best batters in the world.

Within a few years, Joe Root became one of the main batters in the English team. In 2017, he was appointed as Test captain for the national side, a role he held till 2022. However, he lost the trust of the board after a series of defeats in the recent past. Under his guidance, England lost their last five series, which included the Ashes 2021–2022 season. Overall, England have won 27, lost 26 and drawn 11 in 64 matches under Joe Root’s captaincy.

England vs New Zealand First Test 2022: Match Report
New Zealand gave England a 277-run target after an improved batting performance in their second innings thanks to a 195-run stand between Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell.
England started off their innings with a positive intent as the opening stand made 31 runs in 8 overs. However, England’s pursuit of reaching the target was halted in a big way after losing 4 wickets for 69 runs. With a 90-run partnership between Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes, England repaired their innings quite well. But they still required 118 runs with five wickets in hand.

The New Zealand campaign was expecting to put England on the back foot by picking up quick wickets early in the morning on day 4. However, their expectations didn’t come out as planned as Root and Ben Foakes took charge of the Kiwi bowlers and sealed the match just after the drinks break of the morning session. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 115*, having completed his 100 and 10,000 in the same delivery. Justifiably, Root was named player of the match for his brilliant effort with the bat.
Earlier in the match, New Zealand were all out for 132 in their first innings. In response, England had only a 9 run lead after scoring 141 runs in their first innings. New Zealand made a good comeback in their second innings and scored 285 runs. The second Test match of the series will start on June 10 (Friday) at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
