WI vs BAN 2nd ODI 2022: Resurgent Bangladesh aim for series win
The Bangladesh national men’s cricket team finally registered their first victory in their 2022 Caribbean tour after beating the hosts by 6 wickets in the first ODI match. This was Bangladesh’s nine straight victories over the West Indies. If Bangladesh win the remaining two matches in the series, they will equal West Indies' record of eleven straight victories between the two sides. The visiting side's top priority at the moment is to win the WI vs BAN 2nd ODI 2022 in order to clinch the series with a game in hand. The second ODI preview of WI vs BAN 2022 series is discussed in this article.
West Indies vs Bangladesh Series 2022: Second ODI Match Preview
The Bangladesh bowlers were brilliant in the first ODI. Their efforts practically helped Bangladesh clinch the series-opening contest. In contrast, the Caribbean team couldn’t carry on their recent good run of form in the first match of the limited-overs series. In other words, the batting unit was clueless against Bangladesh bowlers. The WI vs BAN 2nd ODI 2022 will be crucial for both teams, which will be played at the same venue. The match will start at 7.30 p.m. (Bangladesh Standard Time) on Wednesday (July 13) at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.
Bangladesh
Bangladesh's campaign is full of confidence at the moment after sealing the first match. The bowlers' expectations will be high again in the second ODI, but putting in the same effort in all matches is not possible. So, the batters have to come forward and display their best effort in the middle.
Read Mahmudullah hopes spinners shine in 3rd T20I
Bangladesh need a big partnership from the top order and someone has to play an anchor role in order to set up a big total on board. Captain Tamim usually guides the Bangladesh innings, but now the time has come for Litton Das to step up and play the role for the side. Afif Hossain needs to play a solid knock if he gets a proper chance to build his innings. Veteran Mahmudullah Riyad has been criticized for not performing to his full potential with the bat. Riyad also needs to show his true prowess as a pinch hitter, especially in the death overs.
In bowling, Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz had brilliant outings in the first match. However, no one can deny the fact that Nasum Ahmed and Taskin Ahmed were very economical in their respective spells. One major concern for Bangladesh could be their fielding. They dropped multiple catches in the first match, which they need to improve as soon as possible. There is no chance of making a change in the playing XI for the second match.
Predicted playing XI (Bangladesh)
Top-Order: Tamim Iqbal (captain), Litton Das, Anamul Haque
Middle-Order: Mahmudullah Riyad, Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan Sohan (wicket-keeper), Mosaddek Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz
Lower-Order: Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman

West Indies
The West Indies campaign was probably expecting another ruthless performance against Bangladesh in the ODI format. However, the match result didn't turn out as anticipated for them. Batters' approach towards spinners was shambolic. The batters were nervous facing the Bangladesh spinners and the pacers also managed to put pressure on them as well.
West Indian batters need to come up with a proper plan to deal with Bangladeshi spinners. Besides, they need to find a way to rotate the strike rate to set up a challenging total. Bowlers comparatively did well for the home side, picking up four wickets while defending a low total. Mahmudullah Riyad survived twice in the first match. The outcome of the first ODI would have been different had Riyad been out earlier in his innings.
The West Indies may opt for a couple of changes in order to bolster their playing XI. However, the West Indian batters have to play a big part if they want to level the series at 1-1 by winning the second match.

Predicted Playing XI (West Indies)
Top-Order: Shai Hope (wicket-keeper), Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks
Middle-Order: Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran (captain), Rovman Powell, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph
Lower-Order: Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Jayden Seales
Guyana’s Weather and Pitch Report
The forecast suggests that there is a strong possibility of rain with thunderstorms on Wednesday (July 13) in Georgetown, Guyana. Therefore, a deduction of overs is a strong possibility for the second match. The pitch would be batting-friendly, so opting to bat first could be a suitable option for the toss-winning captain.
Verdict
Many experts believed Bangladesh's chances in the ODI series would be quite slim after a dismal showing in both the Test and T20I series. However, Bangladesh once again showed why they are among the world's toughest ODI sides. The Tamim Iqbal-led team completely outplayed the Windies in the opening game and won by a comfortable margin to grab the series lead.

Additionally, the players of the visiting team will have little trouble adjusting to the conditions because every game in the ODI series will take place at Providence Stadium in Guyana. On the other hand, the Windies team has to devise a better strategy for the second ODI because Bangladesh will begin as the favourite in the WI vs BAN 2nd ODI 2022. Bangladesh will attempt to win the limited-overs series in the second game in order to make the third ODI a dead rubber.

West Indies beat Bangladesh to sweep T20 series
West Indies beat Bangladesh by five wickets in the third and final T20I of the three-match series on Thursday night.
With this win, the hosts won the series 2-0 after the first match was washed out due to heavy rains.
Bangladesh batted first in this match after a delayed start posed by rains. The visitors scored a par score of 163 for five wickets, with Afif Hossain hitting a blazing fifty off 38 balls with two fours and two sixes. And Liton Das posted 49.
But the other batters failed to score at the pace that T20 cricket requires.

Anamul Haque (10), Shakib Al Hasan (5) and Mahmudullah Riyad (22) failed to do what the team needed to post a bigger total on the board against the West Indies.
Hayden Walsh bagged two wickets for the hosts.
In reply, Nicholas Pooran, the West Indian captain, scored 74 off just 39 balls with five fours and five sixes and made it easy for the hosts to win the match chasing a target of 164 runs. Kyle Mayers also hit a fifty.
Bangladesh used eight bowlers in this match but failed to defend a good total.
Nasum Ahmed, the left-arm spinner, bagged two wickets conceding 44 runs in four overs, while Mahedi Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain scalped one wicket each.
Now both the team will take on a three-match ODI series, starting July 10. The other matches will be played on July 13 and 16.
Before the limited-over series, Bangladesh and West Indies played a two-match Test series that the Tigers lost 2-0.

Mahmudullah hopes spinners shine in 3rd T20I
Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah Riyad said he is hoping that the spinners would do better on the wicket of Providence Stadium in Guyana.
Bangladesh will take on the hosts West Indies in the third T20I on Thursday night aiming to level up the series.
The first match of the series was washed away due to heavy rain. The hosts won the second match by 35 runs and they are leading by 1-0 in the series. Now, Bangladesh has only one way to level the series— to win the final match.

“Spinners can do well on this wicket,” Mahmudullah said before the match. “I’ve previously played ODI here and saw that the wicket of this venue is traditionally dry which is helpful for the spinners.”
But the Bangladesh team is yet to decide how the team will look. “Still, we have to think about many things. The condition might change if it rains here on the match day. We will decide about our playing XI later,” Mahmudullah added.
If the condition remains dry, Bangladesh might bring Nasum Ahmed, the left-arm spinner, back to the playing XI.

Bangladesh
The Mahmudullah Riyad-led Bangladesh T20I team has only won 1 match since the Super 12 round of the 2021 T20 World Cup. They lost 10 and one game had no result. This clearly indicates that the Bangladesh Twenty20 team hasn’t been in the best shape at the moment. They have shortcomings in certain areas which need to be fixed as early as possible before the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Bangladesh team management needs to find out the major issues through the remaining series before the upcoming World Cup. The approach of the batters to the shortest format, the inability of power-hitting and the lack of effectiveness in the death over bowling are some of the issues that have been revealed in the ongoing series. Bangladesh need to find a solution to these issues before the third match of the series. Otherwise, they will face consequences like in the second T20I.
There might be a few adjustments made for the series' final game. However, changes won’t make any big difference if the players fail to thrive in the actual contest.
Predicted Playing XI
Top-Order: Litton Das, Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan;
Middle-Order: Mahmudullah (Captain), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (Wicket-Keeper), Mosaddek Hossain, Mahedi Hasan;
Lower-Order: Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman.

West Indies
The West Indies had a tough T20 World Cup 2021, and a number of big stars announced their retirements post the mega event. The current West Indian team is relatively inexperienced and is led by wicket-keeper batter Nicholas Pooran. Nicholas has shown good captaincy so far in the series. He has rotated his spinners and faster bowlers pretty well, which has proved effective during the contest.
Rovman Powell was outstanding with the bat in the second match. It seems Powell’s new role is to accelerate the run rates in the death overs. Furthermore, the West Indies have found solid opening partners in Mayers and Brandon. The team has built well under the leadership of Nicholas Pooran. The Windies will be eager to prove their progression by winning the BAN vs WI 3rd T20I 2022 as well as the series.
Predicted Playing XI
Top-Order: Kyle Mayers, Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks;
Middle-Order: Nicholas Pooran (Captain & Wicket-Keeper), Rovman Powell, Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd, Romario Shepherd;
Lower-Order: Obed McCoy, Akeal Hosein, Hayden Walsh Jr.

Pitch and Weather Forecast
There is a strong chance of rain on Thursday in Georgetown, Guyana. Therefore, the match could be interrupted due to inclement weather conditions. Batting first would be an ideal choice for the toss-winning captain at this ground.
Aftermath
Bangladesh’s performance in the ongoing Caribbean tour has been very disappointing. After a clueless showing by the batters in the Test format, there was an expectation that the batters would come out with a lot of intent in the shortest format of the game. However, it seems Bangladesh’s batting unit doesn’t have any idea of what to do in the middle, be it at the beginning of the innings or in the death overs. The bowling was subpar in the second match, conceding too many runs in the death overs.
Bangladesh need to find a quick solution to all of their major shortcomings in order to level the series. Will they be able to stop a rejuvenated West Indies side? The way the Caribbean team has been performing over the last two months, it will be a real challenge for the visitors to overcome the hosts in the BAN vs WI 3rd T20I 2022.

ICC WTC 2021-2023: Favourites to Reach the Final
The ICC made some changes to the rules and one of the major changes is that the PCT (percentage) determines the position of the 2021–2023 World Test Championship points table. As a result, teams with higher PCT rank higher in the points standings. Let’s take a look at all the teams' current scenarios in their quest for the Test Championship final.
Australia
Australia are currently leading the standings with 6 victories and 3 draws. They are the only team that has remained unbeaten in the tournament. With 10 matches in hand, Australia are in a strong position to finish top of the points table and secure a place in the final.
Verdict: Top 2
South Africa
The ICC Test Championship 2021–2023 is going well for South Africa, who are now placed second with 71.43 PCT. The Proteas team still has to play two challenging series against England and Australia. In these two series, they will compete in six games that will determine whether they advance to the final or not.
Verdict: Top 5
Read BAN vs WI 2022: Bangladesh aim for strong comeback in T20I series
Pakistan
Pakistan are in the third position with 52.38 PCT. Pakistan have a genuine chance to reach the final as there are 7 matches still left for them. Four of those matches will be against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Both the New Zealand and Sri Lanka series will not be a big threat to the Pakistan side. However, the series against England will be a tough challenge for them.
Verdict: Top 4
India
India’s current position is fourth with 52.08 PCT. Team India will be favourite to beat Bangladesh in both of the matches. However, the four matches against Australia at home will decide whether they can reach the final for the second time.
Verdict: Top 4

West Indies
The Caribbean team’s remaining two series would be against Australia and South Africa. Both the opponents will target the West Indies to increase their respective PCT. Therefore, the West Indies will have a tough time during the two series. The West Indies are in fifth position, and they will try to finish in the top five in the final point standings.
Verdict: Top 7
Sri Lanka
The Lankan Test side has three victories so far in the tournament and they have currently occupied the sixth position in the points table. Sri Lanka have no realistic chance of finishing in the top two even if they win the series against New Zealand and Pakistan. They will try to finish as high as possible in the points table.
Verdict: Top 7
Read WI vs BAN: Rain-hit T20I series opener washes away
England
Two months ago, England's Test team looked shambolic and they were at the bottom of the points standings. However, they have made a brilliant comeback after Ben Stokes was appointed as captain. England have now won four consecutive Tests and moved up to the seventh position. With only six matches left, England have no chance to qualify for the final.
Verdict: Top 7
New Zealand
The reigning champions, New Zealand, are having a difficult time in the ongoing 2021–2023 Test Championship. They have only won two of nine matches so far in the tournament. The Kiwi Test side will likely finish in the bottom half of the points table in the second edition of the competition.
Verdict: 8th position
Read ENG vs IND 2022: Bumrah breaks record as India dominate 5th Test
Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s only victory in the WTC has come against New Zealand earlier in January 2022. Apart from that, Bangladesh have lost eight matches and they will likely taste the same results against India in November. Therefore, the Bangladeshi team's ICC Test Championship 2021–2023 campaign is expected to be another lackluster event.
Verdict: 9th position
Way Forward
Australia's qualification for the final appears to be fairly guaranteed based on the current standings. The reigning champions, New Zealand’s chance to secure a place in the ICC World Test Championship 2021–2023 final is all but over. So, they won’t be able to defend their title. First edition runner-up India are still in the race for the championship match, but they will face staunch competition from Pakistan and South Africa. The majority of the remaining teams have no chance to qualify for the final, with Bangladesh finishing bottom in the points standings, which is all but assured.

Root and Bairstow rocket England to record Test win
Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow shredded India with unbeaten centuries as England rewrote history by winning their series-deciding Test by seven wickets on the last day of the fifth Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Needing 119 more runs to register its highest successful run chase of 378 in Test cricket, England cruised to 378-3 half an hour before lunch with yet another blockbuster chase of the summer.
“We are trying to rewrite how test cricket is being played, in England in particular,” captain Ben Stokes said of their new aggressive approach.

“We know that we want to give new life to test cricket, and the support that we’ve had has been incredible. We are bringing a new set of fans to test cricket. We want to leave a mark.”
Root crafted his fifth Test hundred of the year to be 142 not out while Bairstow’s purple patch continued as he reached 114 not out – his second century of the Test and fourth in his last five innings.
India went into the Test rearranged from last year leading 2-1 and on course for its first series win in England in 15 years. Instead, India conceded its most ever runs in the fourth innings of a loss, and the series was drawn.
England pulled off a fourth straight successful run chase after New Zealand was swept 3-0 last month under the new management of Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
Root and Bairstow came together soon after tea on Monday when England lost three wickets in the space of 16 deliveries. The Yorkshiremen commanded India’s pace threat of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj by combining in a majestic 269-run stand at more than 5 runs per over.
“Just two lads from Yorkshire, grown up playing together from academy to test matches, it’s pretty special,” Bairstow said of his association with Root.
They credited the platform they received from the opening century stand between Alex Lees and Zak Crawley.
Root and Bairstow resumed on Tuesday at 259-3, both of them in the 70s.
They negated the reverse swing of the India pacers with some authoritative drives on both sides of the pitch. Root raised his hundred with a boundary to third man off Siraj and Bairstow followed his 106 in the first innings with another hundred after he went for a sharp single.

Bairstow then pounded Siraj for three consecutive boundaries as both batters cantered 34 fours and a six each. Bairstow, dropped twice on Monday, hit 114 from 145 balls. Root was 142 from 173. Both had a staggering strike rate of around 80.
“The feeling in the dressing room is whatever you get, we’re going to take it on,” Root said. “When you’re (batting) at 4.5 an over, it’s hard to put the pressure back on you.”
Siraj was smacked for 0-98 off his 15 overs while Shardul Thakur went for 0-65 off his 11 overs. Bumrah was the sole wicket-taker in the second innings.
India was on top after achieving a 132-run first innings lead. But England stormed back on the fourth morning when it claimed the last seven India wickets for 170 runs to limit the visitors to an overall lead of 377. The target of 378 — the ninth highest in test history if successful — looked unlikely until England started batting.
“England kept on fighting and played better than us in the second innings,” Bumrah said after leading India in the absence of virus-affected Rohit Sharma.

Aftermath
Winning the ODI series will be Bangladesh's main priority right now as they prepare to wrap up their Caribbean tour. Bangladesh are a very strong team in the limited-overs format. Bangladesh will still be able to win the three-match series despite having had a difficult West Indies tour thus far. Additionally, the potential for achieving some individual milestones will motivate the cricketers to play better in the remaining matches of the WI vs BAN Series 2022.
