Bangladesh bounce back to level series as Tanvir bags five
Bangladesh pulled off a spirited 16-run win over Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Saturday, levelling the three-match series 1-1 and setting up a decider in Pallekele on July 8.
Tanvir Islam, the left-arm spinner, bagged his maiden five-for in just his second ODI to guide the Tigers to a gritty win.
After being bowled out for 248 in 45.5 overs, Bangladesh produced a disciplined bowling effort, led by left-arm spinner Tanvir.
Despite a fighting 78 from Sri Lankan middle-order batter Janith Liyanage, the hosts were bowled out for 232 in the 49th over. Janith took Sri Lanka close a win, but his dismissal to Mustafizur Rahman ended Sri Lanka’s hope.
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh made a solid start despite losing Tanzid Hasan Tamim early.
Young left-hander Parvez Hossain Emon struck a fluent 67 off 69 balls, his maiden ODI fifty.
He built a 63-run partnership with Najmul Hossain Shanto after the early dismissal of Tanzid. Towhid Hridoy added 51 and looked set for a bigger score before being run out.
Bangladesh’s middle and lower-order contributions remained modest until a late cameo from Tanzim Hasan Sakib, who struck 33 not out off just 21 balls.
Asitha Fernando was the best bowler for the hosts, taking 4 for 35, while Wanindu Hasaranga grabbed 3 for 60.
In reply, Sri Lanka raced to 75 within 10 overs, riding on a blistering knock from Kusal Mendis, who smashed 56 off 31 balls.
But Bangladesh wrested control through Tanvir’s double breakthrough, removing Mendis and Kamindu Mendis. The wickets kept tumbling, and Sri Lanka were reduced to 170 for 8.
However, Janith kept the hosts alive with a gritty innings. He added 58 runs with Dushmantha Chameera for the ninth wicket and looked dangerous until Tanzim returned to dismiss Chameera in the penultimate over.
When Sri Lanka needed 27 off the last 18 balls, Janith smashed Mustafizur for a six. But off the next ball, he sent Mustafizur a return catch, and Bangladesh eventually won the match in the next over.
Tanzim took the last wicket after a missed catch. He bowled Dushmantha Chameera for 13 off 29 balls.
The next match on July 8 has now become a series decider.

India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh moved to Sept 2026
India’s scheduled white-ball tour of Bangladesh in August 2025 has been officially deferred to September 2026, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed on Saturday
The BCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the decision to postpone the three-match ODI and three-match T20I series mutually, citing international calendar constraints and scheduling convenience for both sides.
“This decision has been reached following discussions between the two Boards, taking into account the international cricketing commitments and scheduling convenience of both teams,” the BCB said in a statement.
Originally slated for August 2025, the series was already under doubt due to political considerations and fixture congestion.
BCB announces T20I squad for Sri Lanka series
BCB President Aminul Islam had earlier hinted that the series might not go ahead as planned, pending clearance from Indian authorities and availability within a packed calendar.
With the postponement now formalized, Bangladesh will have to wait until September 2026 to host their high-profile neighbours in a bilateral white-ball series.
The BCB said revised dates and fixtures for the tour will be announced later.
Despite the delay, BCB remains upbeat.
“The BCB looks forward to welcoming India in September 2026 for this eagerly anticipated series,” the board stated.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 248 in 45.5 overs in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Saturday, with Parvez Hossain Emon and Towhid Hridoy leading the way in a topsy-turvy batting effort.
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a bright start despite losing opener Tanzid Hasan early.
Parvez and Najmul Hossain Shanto rebuilt with a 63-run stand, but Najmul’s dismissal to a short ball from Charith Asalanka triggered a period of instability.

Parvez impressed with his maiden ODI fifty, scoring 67 off 69 balls with six fours and three sixes before being bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga.
Towhid kept the innings going with a patient 51 off 69 balls, but he too fell before capitalizing on the platform.
The middle and lower order faltered, losing wickets in clusters. Bangladesh went from 204 for six to 218 for nine before a quick cameo from Tanzim Hasan Sakib (33 not out off 21) added late runs.
Asitha Fernando was the best bowler for Sri Lanka, finishing with 4 for 35, while Hasaranga chipped in with 3 for 60. Chameera and Asalanka picked up one wicket each.
Bangladesh lost the first ODI. Another defeat would send them out of the run for the title of the series.

Shubman Gill’s record-breaking 269 puts India firmly on top at Edgbaston
India dominated day two of the Edgbaston Test on Thursday, with Shubman Gill’s sensational 269 followed by three quick England wickets, leaving the visitors in full control.
Gill’s marathon 8 ½-hour knock powered India to 587 all out — their highest Test total in England in 35 years. Following that, pacers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj exploited a seemingly unresponsive pitch to leave England reeling at 25-3, with three catches taken in the slips.
By stumps, England had reached 77-3, still trailing India by 510 runs. Harry Brook was unbeaten on 30 and Joe Root on 18, but the day undoubtedly belonged to Gill, India’s new captain, who broke multiple records in a composed yet dominant display on a flat wicket.
England’s fatigue was evident after choosing to field first and spending over 151 overs and five sessions trying to dismiss India.
“Spending 151 overs in the field is always tough, both mentally and physically,” England assistant coach Jeetan Patel said. “Credit to Shubman for his masterclass. The guys gave everything but they’re understandably exhausted.”
Gill took the lead, responding to India’s first Test loss in Leeds by shouldering the responsibility of giving his side a shot at leveling the series.
Resuming on 114, his second century in as many Tests, Gill batted through the morning and afternoon with complete authority, frustrating England’s bowlers.
Bangladesh collapse in first ODI vs Sri Lanka
India began the day at 310-5, with Gill and Ravindra Jadeja steadying the innings after a wobble at 211-5. Their partnership reached 203 before lunch when Jadeja, on 89, gloved a short delivery from Josh Tongue to the keeper.
Washington Sundar, brought in to strengthen the lower order, added 42 in a 144-run stand with Gill before being bowled by Root shortly before tea.
Gill remained composed, looking as fresh at tea on day two as he did walking out on day one.
Records tumble
Gill’s knock was not just about consolidating India’s position but rewriting records along the way:
On 148, he surpassed his previous best Test score of 147 from Leeds. At 180, he posted the highest score by an India captain in England, overtaking Mohammad Azharuddin’s 179 at Old Trafford in 1990.His double century, brought up with a single off his 311th delivery, made him the seventh visiting skipper with a Test double hundred in England. On 222, he bettered Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the highest score by an Indian in England (221 at The Oval, 1979).His 236 became the second-highest individual score by an Indian against England. At 250, brought up in 348 deliveries, Gill registered his 29th boundary. With 255, he eclipsed Virat Kohli’s 254 (vs South Africa, 2019) to post the highest score by an India captain.Gill eventually fell for 269, his highest first-class score, flicking a short ball from Tongue straight to Ollie Pope at square leg. His innings included 30 boundaries and three sixes, earning a standing ovation from the Edgbaston crowd and handshakes from England players.
England wrapped up the tail within 30 minutes, with Shoaib Bashir leading the bowling figures with 3-167 from 45 overs.
India’s bowling attack, minus their spearhead Jasprit Bumrah who was rested, initially faced scrutiny. But debutant Akash Deep made an immediate impact, dismissing first Test centurions Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks in consecutive deliveries.
Asalanka’s ton lifts Sri Lanka to 244 despite Taskin’s four-for
Siraj followed up by removing Zak Crawley for 19, reducing England to 25-3.
Brook narrowly survived an lbw appeal off Siraj on 1 and had a close call in the final over, chopping the ball onto his stumps but managing to avoid stepping on them.

Taskin regrets Bangladesh’s collapse after promising start in first ODI
Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed said Bangladesh lost control of the first ODI against Sri Lanka after a sudden collapse in the middle of their chase, triggered by the dismissal of set batter Tanzid Hasan.
Bangladesh were in a strong position at 100 for 1 while chasing Sri Lanka’s 244. But things fell apart quickly as they lost seven wickets for just five runs, ending up all out for 167 and handing Sri Lanka a 77-run victory.
Speaking after the match, Taskin, who returned to international cricket after nearly four months with an impressive 4 for 47, said the team panicked after a couple of quick dismissals.
“After Tamim got out, we got panicked,” said Taskin. “The way we lost wickets after that was disappointing. We are not a bad side. Everyone has the ability, but the collapse cost us the game.”
Najmul Hossain Shanto’s run-out started the slide, followed by the dismissal of Tanzid, who had earlier scored 62 off 61. Jaker Ali later added 51, but the support never came from the other end.
Asalanka’s ton lifts Sri Lanka to 244 despite Taskin’s four-for
“Our start was good. Jaker batted really well. If someone had supported him, we could’ve won. We didn’t bat well as a team,” Taskin added.
Despite his personal bowling success and the bowlers managing to restrict Sri Lanka below 250, Taskin remained disappointed.
“We expected to finish it 5-7 overs earlier. But that collapse hurt us badly,” he said.
