Could Koeman be closer to staying at Barca after Camp Nou meeting?
The future of FC Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman remains up in the air after his meeting with club President, Joan Laporta on Tuesday evening, but it appears that there is now a real possibility Koeman could continue in the Barcelona dugout next season.
Barca's disappointing exit in the last-16 of the Champions League and their third-place finish in La Liga after falling away badly in the last month of the campaign are key factors against Koeman remaining in charge at the Camp Nou.
Those results and the apparent criticism of the coach, who last week said he and his players deserved "more respect" from the club, had led most to think that the Dutchman's two-year contract would be terminated with a year left to run, but that appears to have changed after his meeting with Laporta.
Although the meeting lasted for just over half an hour according to the Barcelona-based press, Koeman's agent, Rob Jansen told reporters he had left the meeting with "good feelings," adding "there will be more conversations."
That implies that Koeman will remain at Barcelona, at least for the near future, and the news that the club is negotiating with Dutch midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum strengthens that feeling.
Wijnaldum's agent was spotted at the Camp Nou offices earlier this week and the 30-year-old's contract with Liverpool expires this summer allowing him to move on a free transfer.
The 30-year-old is a player that Koeman had requested to strengthen his squad for the coming season and it would make little sense to attend to a specific petition from the coach if Koeman was on the verge of leaving the club.
As well as the probable arrival of Wijnaldum, one factor in Koeman's favor is the work he has done with young players such as Pedri, Oscar Mingueza, Ronald Araujo and Ilaix Moriba, all of whom look certain to play a big part in Barca's low-cost squad next season as the club continues to work on the renewal of its aging squad.

Barcelona president preparing club’s revamping process
With or without Lionel Messi, Barcelona will look different next season.
Club president Joan Laporta himself admits changes are coming.
“It’s the end of a cycle. We are entering a process of renovation,” Laporta said at an event late Tuesday.
Barcelona has one Spanish league match left this season but it’s not in contention for the title anymore in what will be a disappointing ending to another complicated season for the Catalan club.
“We won the Copa del Rey title, and we are proud of that, but we were eliminated very early in the Champions League and we lost the league in an incomprehensible manner,” Laporta said. “So it’s time to analyze the results, our game, and also our attitude, mentality and ambition.”
Barcelona may finish as low as fourth in the Spanish league, a competition it was challenging for only a few weeks ago before squandering several opportunities to take the lead. In the Champions League, the team couldn’t get past Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, extending its European title drought to six years.
“We’ve been working for some time to find the elements that we’ll need to build a very competitive team and win the relevant titles,” Laporta said. “And starting next week we will start explaining what we will be doing.”
Laporta has some big challenges ahead, including convincing Messi to stay after he asked to leave at the end of last season. The Argentine’s contract ends this season and there is still no word on whether he will continue with the club. Laporta based his presidential campaign on his ability to convince Messi to stay.
Laporta also will have to put the club back on track financially after it was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Spanish media reports said Laporta recently was able to land a deal of several hundred million dollars with Goldman Sachs that will help the club restructure its finances.
The squad changes may start at the top with coach Ronald Koeman, who was criticized for not taking advantage of the team’s chances near the end of the season. There have been widespread talks about former player Xavi Hernández taking over his job for next season.
There are also rumors about the possible arrival of Memphis Depay to boost the team’s attack, while Spanish media has speculated that Antoine Griezmann could leave after another lackluster season for the France forward. Some reports say he could be involved in a trade with Atlético Madrid for young Portugal star João Félix.
Among the team’s more veteran players still in the squad are Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto and Sergio Busquets. Younger players who have been doing well include Ansu Fati, Pedri González, Sergiño Dest and Ousmane Dembélé.
Laporta said the club’s women’s team should be seen an example after winning its first Champions League title on Sunday with a 4-0 victory over Chelsea.
“Today it’s women’s soccer that represents the pride of all of our fans,” Laporta said. “In men’s soccer we will need to go through a renovation process because a cycle has ended.”

Golden Boot-chasing Kane leads Tottenham to win over Wolves
Harry Kane endured a frustrating match in his bid to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot for the third time despite scoring in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Wolverhampton on Sunday.
Kane’s 45th-minute goal moved him to a league-leading 22 for the season — one clear of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah — but the England captain also struck the post twice and had an effort cleared off the line.
Kane has two games left while Salah has three, starting with West Bromwich Albion later Sunday. Kane was the league’s top scorer in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who set up Kane for the opening goal with a piercing through-ball, added the second in the 64th minute by tapping in a rebound from close range after Gareth Bale’s shot was saved.
Tottenham moved into sixth place, above West Ham on goal difference, and still has a mathematical — if highly unlikely — chance of finishing in the top four in the race for Champions League qualification after winning three of its last four league games under interim manager Ryan Mason. The team is five points behind fourth-place Chelsea.
“We are not happy with where we are, we should be higher and we only have ourselves to blame,” Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli said.
“We are showing now what we can do but it is a bit too late. We just have to keep working hard and take it into the next season as well.”
Kane could easily have had a hat trick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the striker curling a long-range shot from distance against the base of the post in the fifth minute and then beating goalkeeper Rui Patricio to a high ball only to see his header cleared off the line by backpedaling defender Conor Coady.
Off a sharp counterattack early in the second half, Alli slipped a ball through for Kane but his low shot was tipped onto the post by Patricio. Alli latched onto the rebound but struck the follow-up against the other post.
“Excellent,” Mason said of Tottenham’s display. “We created lots of chances and the score line was probably a bit flattering to them. There were big moments, their keeper made a couple of good saves, we hit the post three times and dominated the game in the second half, so really pleased.”
