Chhayanaut commemorates Rabindranath Tagore with cultural tribute
In commemoration of the 83rd death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European and Bengali poet to win the Nobel Prize for literature and widely revered as the 'World's Poet', Chhayanaut recently organized a cultural event.
The tribute program was held on Friday at the Chhayanaut Auditorium in the capital’s Dhanmondi.
Chhayanaut commemorated Rabindranath Tagore through performances of several artists, in two recitals and 15 solo and ensemble songs. The program began with the performance of the ensemble song 'Shrabon Dharar Moto Poruk Jhore', followed by a solo performance.
The solo musical performances included, 'Bhoy Hote Tobo Obhay Majhe' by Maksura Akhtar Antara, 'Aponi Obosh Holi' by ATM Jahangir, 'Badhon Chherar Sadhon Hobe' by Satyam Kumar Debnath, 'Tor Apan Jone Chharbe Tore' by Irin Pervin Onna, ‘Tobu Pari Ne’ by Ashim Dutta, 'Ami Marer Sagor Pari Debo’ by Tania Mannan and 'Nishi-Din Bhorosha Rakhis' by Avijit Das, among other performances.
Amid the songs, Sumona Biswas presented a solo reading titled ‘Shottyer Ahoban’ and Jayanta Roy presented a solo recitation from Tagore’s ‘Shishuteertho’.
The event concluded with two ensemble songs, followed by the all-unit presentation of the National Anthem.
Tagore died at the age of 80 on August 7, 1941; however, his death anniversary is traditionally observed on the 22 Srabon according to the Bengali calendar. Since his death, the day has always been observed with extensive programs in a befitting manner as a tradition in both Bangladesh and India.
Since its birth, the activities of Chhayanaut have been expanded mainly by adopting the nationalist thoughts and creations of Rabindranath and National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. At present Chhayanaut organizes a two-day ‘Rabindra-Utsab’ on Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary on 25 Baishakh and a one-day commemoration ceremony with songs and readings on 22 Shrabon death anniversary.
Cultural organizations observe the day with various events every year; however, this time, due to the political situation, Chhayanaut delayed organizing the event this year.
The institute also commemorated National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 48th death anniversary on September 20. Both events were open to all and telecasted on Chhayanaut's official Facebook page.

Maggie Smith, a favourite among fans of 'Harry Potter' and ‘Downton Abbey,’ dies at 89
Maggie Smith, the masterful, scene-stealing actor who won an Oscar for the 1969 film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “ Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died Friday. She was 89.
Smith’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, said in a statement that Smith died early Friday in a London hospital.
“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” they said in a statement issued through publicist Clair Dobbs.
Smith was frequently rated the preeminent British female performer of a generation that included Vanessa Redgrave and Judi Dench, with two Oscars, a clutch of Academy Award nominations and a shelf full of acting trophies.
She made her film debut in the 1950s, won Oscars for work in the 60s and 70s and had memorable roles in each subsequent decade, including an older Wendy in Peter Pan story “Hook” (1991) and a mother superior of a convent in Whoopi Goldberg’s comedy “Sister Act” (1992).
A commanding stage actor, she played Shakespearean tragedy — 1965 adaptation “Othello” — and voiced Shakespeare-inspired animation in “Gnomeo & Juliet” (2011).
She remained in demand even in her later years, despite her lament that “when you get into the granny era, you’re lucky to get anything.”
Smith drily summarized her later roles as “a gallery of grotesques,” including Professor McGonagall. Asked why she took the role, she quipped: “Harry Potter is my pension.”
Richard Eyre, who directed Smith in a television production of “Suddenly, Last Summer,” said she was “intellectually the smartest actress I’ve ever worked with. You have to get up very, very early in the morning to outwit Maggie Smith.”
“Jean Brodie,” in which she played a dangerously charismatic Edinburgh schoolteacher, brought her the Academy Award for best actress, and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) as well.
Smith added a supporting actress Oscar for “California Suite” in 1978, Golden Globes for “California Suite” and “A Room with a View,” and BAFTAs for lead actress in “A Private Function” in 1984, “A Room with a View” in 1986 and “The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne” in 1988.
She also received Academy Award nominations as a supporting actress in “Othello,” “Travels with My Aunt,” “A Room with a View” and “Gosford Park,” and a BAFTA award for supporting actress in “Tea with Mussolini.” On stage, she won a Tony in 1990 for “Lettice and Lovage.”
From 2010, she was the acid-tongued Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in hit TV period drama “ Downton Abbey,” a role that won her legions of fans, three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and a host of other awards nominations.
But she chafed at television fame. When the show’s run ended in 2016, Smith said she was relieved. “It’s freedom,” she told The Associated Press.
“Not until ‘Downton Abbey’ was I well-known or stopped in the street and asked for one of those terrible photographs,” she said.
She continued acting well into her 80s, in films including the big-screen spinoff to “Downton Abbey” in 2019, its 2022 sequel “Downton Abbey: A New Era” and 2023 release “The Miracle Club.”
Smith had a reputation for being difficult, and sometimes upstaging others.
Richard Burton remarked that Smith didn’t just take over a scene in “The VIPs” with him: “She commits grand larceny.” However, the director Peter Hall found that Smith wasn’t “remotely difficult unless she’s among idiots. She’s very hard on herself, and I don’t think she sees any reason why she shouldn’t be hard on other people, too.”
Smith conceded that she could be impatient at times.
“It’s true I don’t tolerate fools, but then they don’t tolerate me, so I am spiky,” Smith said. “Maybe that’s why I’m quite good at playing spiky elderly ladies.”
Critic Frank Rich, in a New York Times review of “Lettice and Lovage,” praised Smith as “the stylized classicist who can italicize a line as prosaic as ‘Have you no marmalade?’ until it sounds like a freshly minted epigram by Coward or Wilde.”
Smith famously drew laughs from a prosaic line — “This haddock is disgusting” — in a 1964 revival of Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever.”
She repeated the gift for one-liners in “Downton Abbey,” when the tradition-bound Violet witheringly asked, “What is a weekend?”
King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla paid tribute to Smith, who was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire, the equivalent of a knight, by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.
“As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances, and her warmth and wit that shone through both off and on the stage,” they said in a statement.
Fellow actors paid tribute to her on Friday. Hugh Bonneville, who played the son of Smith’s character in “Downton Abbey,” said “anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent.”
“She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances,” he said in a statement.
Rob Lowe, who co-starred with her in “Suddenly, Last Summer,” said the experience was “unforgettable ... sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion.”
“She could eat anyone alive, and often did. But funny, and great company. And suffered no fools. We will never see another. God speed, Ms. Smith!” Lowe wrote on X.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Smith “a true national treasure whose work will be cherished for generations to come.”
Margaret Natalie Smith was born in Ilford, on the eastern edge of London, on Dec. 28, 1934. She summed up her life briefly: “One went to school, one wanted to act, one started to act, one’s still acting.”
Her father was assigned in 1939 to wartime duty in Oxford, where her theater studies at the Oxford Playhouse School led to a busy apprenticeship.
“I did so many things, you know, round the universities there. ... If you were kind of clever enough and I suppose quick enough, you could almost do weekly rep because all the colleges were doing different productions at different times,” she said in a BBC interview.
She took Maggie as her stage name because another Margaret Smith was active in the theater.
Laurence Olivier spotted her talent, invited her to be part of his original National Theatre company and cast her as his co-star in a 1965 film adaptation of “Othello.”
Smith said two directors, Ingmar Bergman and William Gaskill, both in National Theatre productions, were important influences.
Alan Bennett, preparing to film the monologue “A Bed Among the Lentils,” said he was wary of Smith’s reputation for becoming bored. As the actor Jeremy Brett put it, “she starts divinely and then goes off, rather like a cheese.”
“So the fact that we only just had enough time to do it was an absolute blessing really because she was so fresh and just so into it,” said Bennett. He also wrote a starring role for Smith in “The Lady in the Van,” as Miss Shepherd, a redoubtable woman who lived for years in her vehicle on Bennett’s London driveway.
However extravagant she may have been on stage or before the cameras, Smith was known to be intensely private.
“She never wanted to talk about acting. Acting was something she was terrified to talk about because if she did, it would disappear,” said Simon Callow, who performed with her in “A Room with a View.”
Smith married fellow actor Robert Stephens in 1967. They had two sons, Christopher and Toby — who both grew up to be actors — and divorced in 1975. The same year she married the writer Beverley Cross, who died in 1998.

Here’s what actor-presenter Shahriar Nazim Joy had to say about viral letter to Hasina
A letter written by actor and television presenter Shahriar Nazim Joy to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resurfaced on social media, drawing widespread attention and criticism. The actor has since come forward to clarify and defend his actions, while addressing the social backlash.
Originally written in 2014, Joy’s letter requested a plot of land in Purbachal and included high praise for Sheikh Hasina, whom he referred to as the “most outstanding leader” and “an exemplary mother figure.” He also noted a personal connection, pointing out that he shares the same nickname as Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
On Friday, Joy addressed the renewed attention in a Facebook post, emphasizing that the letter has gone viral at least 14 times since 2014. He defended himself by saying that many others had similarly requested and received plots during the previous government’s tenure, adding that he had no involvement in the recently exposed conspiracy involving high-profile artists.
“Even though you didn’t find my name in the ‘Alo Ashbei’ chat group or the YouTubers’ conspiracy, why would you still target me?” Joy wrote in his post. He explained that plots were allotted under section 13 (a) regulations, and while the current government has cancelled those allotments, people continue to circulate his letter online. “People are making my phone number viral and harassing me socially,” he added.
In the post, Joy also admitted to using flattery in the letter, acknowledging that it was something to be “ashamed of.” However, he urged for a fair assessment of the situation: “Of course, this letter contained flattery... Please ensure that the punishment is reasonable. Remember, Allah will not pardon you either. Now we all see that sins have consequences, right?”
He concluded his statement by urging people to stop spreading hatred: “Remain composed and stop spewing hatred. Together, let's provide mutual support and make amends for our mistakes.”
Shariar Nazim Joy, one of the country’s most recognized television actors, has also gained prominence as the host of popular shows like “300 Seconds,” “Sense of Humour,” and “3000 Seconds.” In addition to his television career, he runs his own YouTube channel, “Shahriar Nazim Joy Show.”

Will Taylor Swift show up for Chiefs' season opener against the Ravens on Thursday night?
Close to 80,000 fans are expected to pack Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs play the Baltimore Ravens in a rematch of the AFC championship game Thursday night, lifting the lid on the NFL season.
Many will be watching for Taylor Swift to appear in one of the stadium suites, too.
The pop superstar became one of the Chiefs' biggest fans last season, when she began a high-profile romance with tight end Travis Kelce. He had failed in an attempt to deliver a friendship bracelet at one of her concerts, so Kelce took to social media to invite Swift to a game, and the “Anti-Hero” singer showed up for a September matchup with the Bears.
They continued to see each other throughout the season, whenever Swift was on break from her Eras Tour. The 14-time Grammy winner even made a much-publicized sprint from a stadium show in Japan to Las Vegas in time for the Super Bowl, where she partied with friends such as Blake Lively, enjoyed Post Malone's performance of “America the Beautiful," won what appeared to be a beer chugging contest, and then celebrated the Chiefs' triumph by locking lips with Kelce on the field.
CIA official: Suspects in foiled plot to attack Taylor Swift shows aimed to kill 'tens of thousands'
Along the way, Swift became close friends with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany.
During this past offseason, Kelce frequently dropped in on the Eras Tour, even making an on-stage cameo. Swift later said in a social media post she was still “cracking up/swooning over (Kelce's) Eras Tour debut” before 90,000 screaming fans at Wembley Stadium in London, and that “she was never going to forget these shows.”
Indeed, it has been a busy offseason for both of the superstars.
Swift recently concluded the European leg of the Eras Tour with five consecutive shows at Wembley Stadium, and she is on break until October, when she begins the North American leg with stops across the U.S. and Canada stretching into December.
Kelce and his brother, retired Eagles center Jason Kelce, recently struck a deal reportedly worth nine figures to take their “New Heights” podcast to Amazon's Wondery. He is due to appear in Ryan Murphy's murder mystery “Grotesquerie” on FX debuting Sept. 25, and he is hosting “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity” on Prime Video premiering Oct. 16.
Taylor Swift's Eras tour returns in London, with assist from Ed Sheeran, after foiled terror plot
Then there's the fact that the Chiefs, who have won two straight Super Bowls and three in the past five years, are chasing some history beginning Thursday night. No team has ever won the Lombardi Trophy three consecutive times.
Kelce was asked this week how he juggles everything, and he pointed to the Chiefs practice facility — and Arrowhead Stadium, which sits just up the hill and across the parking lot — as his sanctuary, where he is surrounded by his closest friends.
“I just love football and how it takes me away from life,” he explained, “and it gives me something I can feel genuinely happy about. I enjoy coming into the building, working on my craft, getting to understand a new game plan and perfecting that for the people around me. It gives me a purpose to kind of go about my day and to live my life. I have so much excitement doing it.”
Not everything has been smooth for Swift and Kelce this offseason, though.
Last month, Swift canceled three sold-out shows in Vienna after the CIA discovered intelligence that led to multiple arrests of men linked to the Islamic State group. The agency's deputy director, David Cohen, said "they were plotting to kill a huge number — tens of thousands of people at this concert, including I am sure many Americans — and were quite advanced in this.”
Then on Thursday, a spokesperson for Kelce denounced a document recently posted online that called into question the authenticity of their romance as “entirely false and fabricated.” The document, carrying the title "Comprehensive Media Plan For Travis Kelce’s Relations Following Breakup with Taylor Swift,” was posted on Reddit but has since been deleted.
Taylor Swift kicks off UK Eras shows as some fans wonder if singer is ready to say 'So long, London'
It was posted about the same time that Kelce appeared on “The Rich Eisen Show,” where he discussed their relationship.
“She had just been so open to learning the game,” Kelce said. “I think what makes her so good in her profession is that she’s so detailed in every aspect of it, from the words to her music and even the releases and the music videos and everything. She’s just so detailed and a part of it, that I think she was just curious about the profession.”
Kelce even said that Swift had started drawing up some plays for him, though he noted with a smile, "She’s a little biased and just creates plays for me. So we’ll see if they can make coach (Andy) Reid’s office.”
