Patuakhali family loses sole breadwinner in Bailey Road building fire
Gazi Muhammad Jewel Rana, who used to work as a chef in ‘Ambasia’ restaurant of blaze-hit Bailey Road building, met a dreadful death when he jumped off it in a desperate bid to save his life.
The lone bread earner’s sudden death came as bolt from the blue for Jewel’s poor family. “My son has left us, what we’ll do now,” Jewel’s wailing mother Fatema Begum said when his body was taken to Madhukhali village in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district on Friday from Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
A pall of gloom descended the area when Jewel, 35, was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard there after Asar prayers.
Owners of Chumuk, manager of Kacchi Bhai detained over Bailey Road inferno
He along with his wife Rebeka Sultana, two children—Tasmim, 8 and Taifur, 3—used to live in an area in Dhaka near Baily Road.
On the fateful night, Jewel jumped off the sixth-floor of the multi-storey building after breaking the windowpanes to save himself, Rakib Akon, nephew of Jewel, who used to work in the same restaurant, told UNB over phone.
Rakib said when the fire broke out, he along with his uncle and another staff came down the fourth floor of the building. “At first, he and another one climbed down from the building using a dish cable. After breaking the windowpanes my uncle sat on an air-conditioner to jump from it but the air-conditioner collapsed,” said Rakib.
Jewel got severe injuries on his head and body while falling from the building and died on the spot, he said.
Local people said Jewel could not come to village for the wedding ceremony of her sister Hafiza one month ago as he failed to manage leave. He had a plan to come to his village before the month of Ramadan.
Kawsar Gazi, a UP member of Mithaganj Union, said Jewel’s father is a day labourer and the family was dependent on Jewel’s income.

Dhaka’s air quality once again worst in the world this morning
Dhaka has topped the list of cities worldwide with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 191 at 9:09 am on Saturday morning.
Dhaka’s air was classified as 'unhealthy', according to the air quality index.
Pakistan’s Lahore, Myanmar’s Yangon and Nepal’s Kathmandu occupied the second, third and fourth spots on the list, with AQI scores of 182, 180 and 178 respectively.
Dhaka’s air quality still 'unhealthy', 2nd most polluted in the world this morning
When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents.
The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.
The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone.
Dhaka tops global air quality index as ‘very unhealthy’
Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.
As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

Burnt beyond recognition: Grief-stricken family members forced to wait for DNA identification
"I lost my nephew and we cannot find his dead body."
A man who seemed almost lost in the grounds of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said this while bursting into tears.
He, along with three other family members were searching for the body of Najmul, a fourth-year student at Brac University around 10am this morning.
Najmul was last seen with three friends at the Kacchi Bhai restaurant in Bailey Road on Thursday night.
"Since last night, we have been moving from one hospital to another in search of Najmul's body. Unfortunately, no one has provided any information , and as of now, we still don't know where he is," said his uncle.
The morgue of DMCH witnessed the arrival of more grieving families, including that of Minhajul Islam, a missing software engineer.
Outside the morgue, Minhajul's mother, sister and family members were seen lost contemplating the reality of having lost a family member, and not being able to identify him.
Minhajul didn’t return home last night and couldn’t be reached by phone. Later, one of his friends informed the family that Minhajul went to Kacchi Bhai restaurant.
“There are some dead bodies in the morgue, some of which are completely burnt. However, we have identified a dead body by observing a distinctive mark on the belly and the matching watch he used to wear. But we are awaiting the DNA test results. The samples have been taken,” said one of his friends.
The severity of burns made visual identification nearly impossible for several bodies.
The DMCH authorities started collecting biometric samples to identify the bodies.
“We are taking biometrics from the dead bodies for identification, and in some cases, for security reasons too,” they said.
Dhaka District’s additional magistrate, AKM Hedayetul Islam, said, "After the DNA test of these samples, the identity will be confirmed, and the body will be handed over to the relatives," he added.
