Kurigram, Oct 6 (UNB) – Ten people went missing when a passenger boat sank in the Teesta River in Burirhat area under Rajarhat upazila on Sunday noon.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rashedul Haque said the boat from Burirhat sank around 11 am due to strong currents in the rive while heading towards Sitabkhan.
Krishna Chandra, officer-in-charge of Rajarhat Police Station, said the boat carrying 40 people sank in the river after hitting a portion of an embankment.
Thirty of the passengers managed to swim ashore while the others went missing.
Divers of Fire Service are searching for the missing passengers.
Thousands of people, including relatives of many of those missing, have gathered on the river bank.
