Sources said that 159 police members have been newly-infected. The infected policemen include high ranking officials too.
Besides, 15 policemen died of COVID-19 till Saturday morning, they told UNB.
The policemen were infected while performing their duties.
“Among the total infected policemen, 1,606 have made full recovery till Saturday morning,” said a senior police officer of Police Headquarters.
Earlier on Friday, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) (media) of Police Headquarters Sohel Rana said one in three infected policemen made full recovery, which is 34.39 percent of the total cases.
The recovery rate of infected cops is satisfactory for the constant efforts and directives from Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed, he said.
Besides general people, frontline fighters against coronavirus, doctors, nurses, and members of other law enforcement agencies are also getting infected.
Members of Bangladesh Police, Armed forces, and Rab, along with other agencies have been jointly working to ensure social distancing across the country.
Bangladesh on Saturday recorded the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19 as 28 more patients died in the last 24 hours, raising the death tally to 610.
The country also saw further rise in coronavirus cases with the detection of 1,764 new cases during the same period, taking the total number of cases to 44,608.
