Speakers at a function here on Tuesday laid emphasis on paying utmost attention to gender equality and keep talking on the barriers to ensure that no one is left behind.

They highlighted the urgency of working together for equality everyday which is good for society and economic growth when everyone desires a more sustainable tomorrow.

Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) hosted the event at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium marking the International Women’s Day.

Secretary (East) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mashfee Binte Shams spoke as the chief guest at the event while Ambassador of Switzerland Nathalie Chuard and Ambassador of Sweden to Bangladesh Alexandra Berg von Linde spoke as special guests.

Additional Foreign Secretary and Rector of FSA Asad Alam Siam, Chief of Protocol M Amanul Haq, Director General (Public Diplomacy wing) Mohammad Harun Al Rashid and DG (Consular & Welfare Wing) Seheli Sabrin, among others, joined the event.

DCAB President Rezaul Karim Lotus delivered welcome remarks at the programme conducted by convener Israt Jahan Urmi.

Former DCAB Presidents Mainul Alam, Angur Nahar Monty and Pantho Rahaman and DCAB member Jhumur Bari also spoke.   

Secretary Mashfee said they have every right to expect equal treatment and the constitution gave them the right.

She said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave the constitution which said everybody in this country will have the equal right regardless of gender. “So, it is everybody’s duty to ensure that we follow and respect our constitution.”

Ambassador Nathalie Chuard said, “As the world is trying to pivot towards a Covid-19 recovery, we must pay utmost attention to gender equality. And we have to do better to ensure that no one in our societies is left behind.”

Swedish Ambassador Linde applauded Bangladeshi women and men and the improvements made by their efforts and dedication.

She said civil society plays a central part in continuing to challenge gender norms, promote social justice and female representation and participation in decision-making.

“We need to continue our joint efforts to achieve gender equality. Because we know that when women and girls are given the opportunity to reach their full potential, it is good for society. It is good for economic growth. And it is good for sustainable development,” said Ambassador Linde, adding that “Every day is women’s day. Every day we need to work for equality.”

The guests handed over DCAB crests to its female members and cut a cake together as part of the celebration.
