The lone bailey bridge adjacent to Jungurdi Bus Stand collapsed around 7 am when a sand-laden truck was crossing it, said Selim Reza, officer-in-charge of Nagarkanda Police Station.
The truck was overloaded and heading towards Jungurdi from Dhawapara, police said.
Abul Hossain, sub-divisional engineer of the Faridpur Roads and Highways Department, said the bridge caved in failing to bear the extra weight of the truck.

Jetty Pru, Nagarkanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said the authorities concerned have been informed about the bridge collapse and asked to immediately take steps to construct an alternative road.
However, the truck driver managed to escape after the bridge collapse. Efforts are on to nab him, said police.

Local people told UNB that the bridge was constructed in the 1980s. But over the years, the bridge had become vulnerable due to the movement of overloaded vehicles.

Recently, the authorities concerned repaired the slippers of the bridge and hanged a notice allowing vehicles carrying up to 7 tonnes on the structure.
