Three people were injured when a bailey bridge in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola collapsed with a stone-laden truck and other vehicles on Tuesday. Locals said the Roads and Highways Department is constructing a new girder bridge over a canal in Daori Bazar area of ​​the upazila and a temporary bailey bridge was built next to the under -construction bridge for traffic movement. On information, police and fire fighters conducted a joint operation to salvage truck and other vehicles. Meanwhile, traffic movement on Bhola-Char Fashion road has been suspended due to the collapse of the bridge, forcing people to cross the river by boat. The present width of the 94 km long regional highway from Bhola Sadar upazila to Baburhat of Char Fashion is about 18 feet. It is being widened to 30 feet. For the development of the road, four bridges and 43 culverts are being reconstructed.

Built in the 80’s the bailey bridges in Khagrachari hilly district, were meant for carrying a maximum of 5-ton trucks. Today, goods-laden transports weighing up to 25 tons cross the shaky dilapidated bridges making the structures vulnerable to accidents. “The bailey bridges have now become death traps,” said the driver of a 25-ton truck that regularly carry construction materials from the plains to the hills, speaking on condition of anonymity. According to the Khagrachari Roads and Highways Department, there are 10 risky bailey bridges in Khagrachari. Now these bridges often collapse under weight of vehicles snapping road communications. The Khagrachari Roads and Urban Development Department has promised to that concrete bridges will be constructed to replace all bailey bridges in phases.

Road communication between Faridpur and Maksudpur has remained suspended since Saturday morning, following the collapse of a Bailey bridge over the Kumar River in Nagarkanda upazila of the district.

At least three persons were killed when a truck fell into a river on Tuesday, following the collapse of a Bailey bridge in Rangamati district, police said.

Road communications with Longdu upazila and Merung of Dighinala upazila with other parts of the country remained suspended as a bailey bridge collapsed on Dighinala-Merung road at Choumohoni in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachchari district.

Road communications with  Dighirpur and adjacent areas in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj district came to a halt as a bailey bridge collapsed in Puru Bazar area on Monday morning.   Witnesses said the bridge collapsed around 8am with a big bang  while a overloaded truck was crossing it.
