Notwithstanding the supply constraints, Bangladesh's Covid vaccination campaign reached the remote riverine islands of Kurigram on Tuesday morning.

The health department, in collaboration with Unicef and the district information office, took this initiative, with an aim to get the vaccination rate up in the district.

More than a thousand people got their first Covid shots at the government-run Sardob Primary School, where a vaccination centre has been set up, reports our local correspondent.

UNB has learnt that as many as 3,000 dwellers of different chars in Kurigram Sadar and Rajarhat upazilas have registered themselves for getting their first Covid shot.

Nurunnabi Khandaker, deputy director of the district information office, said, "Many people in the char areas were interested in getting vaccinated, but have been staying out of the drive due to time and money needed to travel from remote areas to jab session sites."

“They are being vaccinated at the initiative of the health department, post-registration,” said the official, also a member of the District Corona Prevention Committee.

Kurigram Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Nazrul Islam said that the vaccination activities will continue on a few more chars in phases.

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rezaul Karim said, "A large number of people in Kurigram live on chars. Special measures have been taken to vaccinate them.”

“We will gradually ensure that no eligible residents in the district are left out of the vaccination process,” he added.
