A fisherman was killed and five others sustained serious injuries after being electrocuted while fishing in the Buridah River in Kurigram’s Rajarhat upazila on Monday noon.
The deceased was identified as Md. Rubel Mia,28, son of Rashid Molla of Haridwashor Taluk village. The injured individuals- Mozammel Haque ,28, Abdur Rahman ,32, Aminul Islam ,19, Shakil Mia ,22, and Anisur Mia ,29, are all residents of the same village.

According to police and locals, the accident occurred in the Purba Debottar area of Chinai union when a group of fishermen entered the river to catch fish. A roadside electric pole had reportedly broken, causing live wires to fall into the water. The victims were electrocuted instantly upon coming into contact with the electrified water.
While Rubel died on the spot, locals managed to rescue the others. The injured were rushed to a local hospital, and several were later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Atiqur Rahman, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Rajarhat Police Station, said police reached the scene quickly and are investigating the matter to ensure necessary legal action is taken.
