Sohel Rana, upazila nirbahi officer of Kalmakanda, said the incident took place around 10:30 am on Wednesday when the trawler with around 35 people on board was heading towards Thakurakona of Netrokona Sadar Upazila from Sunamganj.
A sand-laden boat hit the passenger trawler that finally resulted in the capsize. Although a good number of passengers managed to swim ashore, some went missing.
“The bodies of 10 people, including that of four minors, have been recovered from the river,” the UNO told UNB in the evening without giving any clear information over the number of missing passengers.
The deceased were identified as Lutfunnahar Begum, 26 and her daughter Yasmin, 3; Hamida Khatun, 45; Majida Akhter, 30; Anik, 5; Zahid, 3; Lucky Akhter, 35; Tumpa 5; and Sultana Akhter, 45. They all hailed from Madhyanagar of Sunamganj Sadar upazila while the rest -Mujahid Hossain, 20 - is from Netrokona Sadar.
Relatives claimed that four people - Mofazzal Hossain, 37; Fatema Akhter, 45; Ratan Mia, 35; and Monira Akhter, 5 - are still missing.
The UNO also said the operation to trace the missing ones was going on.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Netrokona Quazi Md Abdur Rahman said the bodies were handed over to the family members.
Besides, the authorities provided each of the nine bereaved families with Tk 10,000 as immediate assistance to take the bodies home and bury those. And the family of the rest deceased from Netrokona Sadar got Tk 20,000, he added.
