Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Friday paid tribute to the Chinese revolutionary heroes by laying a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes at Tiananmen Square in Beijing as part of his official visit to China.
The Prime Minister arrived at the square at 9:15am local time. Accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, he stood in silence for a few moments before walking slowly towards the monument.
He then stepped onto the platform and laid a special red-and-green wreath made of roses and pine leaves at the monument. The wreath carried the inscription, in both Bangla and Chinese “Deepest tribute from the Prime Minister and the people of Bangladesh."
The national anthems of Bangladesh and China were played during the ceremony, while a bugle sounded the Last Post.
After laying the wreath, Tarique Rahman observed a moment of silence in memory of the Chinese revolutionary heroes.
Earlier, a smartly turned-out contingent of the Chinese Armed Forces accorded a state salute to the Prime Minister on his arrival at the square.
The tribute ceremony took place on the final day of Tarique Rahman's four-day official visit to China, which followed his two-day visit to Malaysia, the first leg of his maiden overseas tour since assuming office.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, Prime Minister's advisers Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Humaiun Kobir and Mahdi Amin, and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon were also present.
