For the very first time in the history of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed ‘Oikyoboddho Shikkharthi Jote’ (United Students’ Alliance), has won the polls securing a record number of posts.

Out of total 28 posts in DUCSU, the panel secured 23.

On the other hand, the panels of Chhatra Dal and Ganatantrik Chhatrasangsad did not secure even a single post.

Shibir-backed VP candidate Shadik Kayem was elected VP securing 14,042 votes while his nearest rival Chhatra Dal’s Abidul Islam Khan got 5,708 votes.

In the General Secretary post, Shibir candidate S M Farhad was elected with 10,794 vote while his closest rival Tanvir Bari Hamim of Chhatra Dal got 5,283 votes; Abu Bakar Majumdar of “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 2,131 votes; Meghmallar Basu of the Left Alliance-supported panel “Protirodh Parishad” got 4,949 votes; and independent candidate Arafat Chowdhury got 4,044 votes.

DUCSU: Shadik enjoys commanding lead in race for VP as Shibir set to sweep top three posts

In the Assistant General Secretary post, Shibir-backed candidate Md. Mohiuddin Khan was elected with 11,772 votes while his nearest rival Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed of Chhatra Dal, got 5,064 votes; Ashrefa Khatun of “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” secured 900 votes; independent candidate Tahmid Al Mudassir bagged 3,008 votes and Jabir Ahmed Jubel of “Protirodh Parishad” got 1,511 votes.

In the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary post, Shibir-backed candidate Fatema Tasnim Jhuma won with 10,631 votes, Ariful Islam from the Chhatra Dal panel received 2,470 votes, Numan Ahmed Chowdhury from “Independent Students’ Unity” got 1,776 votes; Mojammel Haque of “Protirodh Porshad” got 1,336 votes and B. M. Fahmida Alam from “Aparajeyo 71 Odommo 24” panel got 1,057 votes.

In Social Services Secretary post Independent candidate A. B. Zubair was elected with 7,608 votes as Social Services Secretary of DUCSU. Mohir Alam of “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 2,099 votes; and Syed Imam Hasan Anik from the Chhatra Dal panel received 3,903 votes.

In Student Transport Secretary, Shibir panel’s  Asif Abdullah bagged 9,061 votes while  Saif Ullah from Chhatra Dal got 3,312 votes; and Rafij Khan from “Independent Students’ Unity” got 4,505 votes.

In the Science and Technology Secretary post, Shibir candidate Iqbal Haydar was elected with 7,833 votes. On the other hand, Ahad Bin Islam Shoaib from “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 4,273 votes; and Mominul Islam Bidhan received 3,200 votes.

Common Room, Reading Room, and Cafeteria Secretary post

Shibir-backed Umme Salma was elected with 9,920 votes. Mitu Akhter from “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 2,240 votes; Chemon Faria Islam Meghla of the Chhatra Dal panel got 2,702 votes; Surmi Chakma from “Independent Students’ Unity” got 4,482 votes; and Nuzia Hasin Rasha from “Protirodh Porshad” got 1,870 votes.

International Affairs Secretary 

Shibir-supported Khan Jasim, injured in July uprising, was elected International Affairs Secretary  with 9,706 votes. Mohammad Sakib of “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 3,992 votes; and Mehedi Hasan of Chhatra Dal received 3,231 votes.

Literature and Cultural Affairs Secretary

Besides, Independent candidate Musaddiq Ali Ibn Muhammad was elected with 7,782 votes as Literature and Cultural Affairs Secretary. Independent candidate Ibrahim Adal received 1,384 votes; Nahiyan Faruq of “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 430 votes; and Abu Hayat Mohammad Zulfikar Zisan of Chhatra Dal received 1,723 votes.

Sports Secretary

 Shibir panel’s Arman Hossain was elected as Sports Secretary of DUCSU with 7,255 votes. Al Amin Sarkar from “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 3,831 votes; Chhatra Dal’s nominated candidate Chimchimya Chakma received 3,788 votes; and independent candidate Jahin Ferdous Jami got 3,438 votes.

Law and Human Rights Secretary

Sakhawat Zakaria, member of Shibir backed panel, was elected Law and Human Rights Secretary with 11,747 votes. Mehedi Hasan Munna from Chhatra Dal received 2,879 votes; Anika Tahsina of “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 3,427 votes; and Nusrat Jahan Nishu from “Independent Students’ Unity” received 3,365 votes.

Research and Publication Secretary

Independent candidate Sanjida Ahmed Tonni was elected Research and Publication Secretary with 11,778 votes. Shibir candidate Sajjad Hossain Khan received 7,189 votes. Chhatra Dal and Ganatantrik Chhatrasangsad did not field any candidates for this post.

Health and Environment Secretary

Shibir’s M. M. Al Minhaj was elected  Health and Environment Secretary with 7,038 votes. Independent candidate Shahriar Mohammad Yamin received 2,965 votes; Israt Jahan Nijhum from “Independent Students’ Unity” got 2,496 votes; and Sabbir Ahmed from “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” received 2,949 votes.

Career Development Secretary

Shibir-supported panel’s Majharul Islam was elected with 9,344 votes as Career Development Secretary of DUCSU. Arkanul Islam Rupak from Chhatra Dal got 3,615 votes; Rezwan Ahmed Rifat from “Boishommobirodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad” got 1,574 votes; and Rupaiya Shreshta Tonchonga from “Independent Students’ Unity” received 4,123 votes.

Besides, from the Shibir-backed panel, the elected executive members of DUCSU include Sorbo mitra Chakma (8,988 votes), Sabikun Nahar Tamanna (10,084 votes), Raihan Uddin (5,082 votes), Miftahul Husain Al Maruf (5,015 votes), Imran Hossain (6,256 votes), Tajinur Rahman (5,690 votes), Afsana Akter (5,747 votes), Anas Bin Munir (5,015 votes), and Belal Hossain Apu (4,865 votes).

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal-backed panel's VP candidate Abidul Islam Khan and independent candidate for the same post Umama Fatema have rejected the Ducsu election.

Abid, and his senior leaders in JCD started complaining about irregularities in the counting process last evening, and in a Facebook post around 2:30am (Wednesday morning), he wrote, “I guessed this result right after noon. Just put numbers as you like. I reject this staged drama.”

In contrast, his panel's GS candidate, Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, seemed to gracefully accept the result, even as he referred to some irregularities.

In a status on his verified Facebook page around the same time, Hamim said: "If the students of Dhaka University think that this is their verdict, then I respect this verdict. I am waiting for the students' reaction."

DUCSU results start trickling in, Shadik Kayem opens up big lead in race for VP

Earlier, Chief Returning Officer Professor Dr Md Jasim Uddin told reporters that voting in the DUCSU and hall union elections concluded with no major incidents reported throughout the day.

Students cast their vote spontaneously and the overall atmosphere at polling centres was peaceful, he said. A total of 471 candidates contested for 28 positions in this year’s Ducsu election.

Among the candidates, 48 vied for the post of Vice President (VP), 19 for General Secretary (GS), and 25 for Assistant General Secretary (AGS).
